.SYNOPSIS...

Mild temperatures and breezy conditions are expected today before
a low pressure system begins to move in tonight. Expect much
colder  temperatures, breezy to windy conditions, and chances for
precipitation Wednesday. Although precipitation amounts are
expected to be light, the valley floors east of Tucson may be
impacted with light snowfall accumulations Wednesday morning.
After this system departs, widespread sub-freezing temperatures
are expected across Southeast Arizona Thursday and Friday
mornings.

.DISCUSSION...

Early this morning, a mid-level speed max was digging south over
the California coastline. This will drive an associated shortwave
to deepen and move over southwest Arizona today, then drop into
northern Sonora and Baja on Wednesday. A surface low initially centered
in the vicinity of Ajo today will drop south as the upper low
closes and becomes vertically stacked. While the main vorticity
max will move east on Thursday, a secondary diving impulse will
likely reinforce the colder air mass associated with this pattern
shift through Friday.

Today, high clouds streaming in and breezy winds will be the
initial signs of the upstream low. By this evening, strong mid-
level height falls will be underway as the upper low settles in
over southwestern Arizona. This impressive synoptic setup however
will be limited by (at least initially) poor moisture, given the
lack of adequate moisture advection and inland track of the low.
Steep mid-level lapse rates thanks to the very cold temperatures
aloft combined with the strong forcing may be able to squeeze out
isolated convection in central to western Pima this afternoon and
evening, however given the moisture problem any convective cells
should be weak and short- lived.

By early Wednesday, guidance begins to show modestly improved
moisture advection into southeastern Arizona (generally focused
from Nogales-Tucson east and northward). As southeastern
Arizona will still remain in the favorable left exit region of the
upper level jet, the area should begin to see an increase in
precipitation activity. Coverage still remains questionable
however as both the southward placement of the upper low (at this
point having likely crossed the International Border) and the
modest moisture profile will limit more widespread precipitation.
In spite of this, crashing snow levels will still bring a chance
of light snow to valleys east of Tucson and a slight chance of
some light snow mixing with rain in the Tucson metro Wednesday
morning. The question still remains whether or not there will be
high enough coverage of accumulating snow in eastern areas of the
state to necessitate a headline. Additionally, there remains
guidance such as the recent NAM, which holds off on precipitation
until later in the day Wednesday, reducing the potential for
accumulations as temperatures warm. With these factors it remains
too early/uncertain for a headline at this time, but the
messaging of isolated one to two inch accumulations down to lower
elevation areas of Cochise, Graham, and Greenlee counties looks
reasonable. Mountain-top snowfall accumulations should remain in
the three to six inch range.

East to southeast winds are expected to increase late Tuesday
night and become strongest Wednesday as the upper low drops
through. Current guidance continues to tease wind advisory levels
in the Tucson area, Upper Gila Valley, and the far southeastern
portions of the state. Widespread 15-25 mph winds with gusts to 35
mph are likely with the higher end areas susceptible to southeast
flow likely to see 20-30 mph and gusts up to 45 mph.

Finally the greatest impact, especially for the Tucson area, may
be freezing morning lows Thursday, Friday, and potentially into
the weekend. NBM temperature probabilities continue to be a bit
more bullish on the freezing than MOS guidance, but even the
warmer MOS puts KTUS right about at the freezing mark. A Freeze
Watch remains in effect for Thursday and Friday mornings.

Temperatures should moderate back to near normal by the weekend,
though with the door open for a few degrees below normal as
ensemble height anomalies show signs of weak troughing lingering past
the exit of this system. Morning lows near or at the freezing
mark again in Tucson can't be ruled out each morning through early
next week.

SCT-BKN clouds at 12k-15k feet today. South to southeasterly winds
begin to increase today ahead of a low pressure system dropping
in from the north. Winds turn and become southeast to easterly
after 08/03Z, becoming 15-25 kts by Wednesday morning. An isolated
rain/snow shower can't be ruled out tonight as the low pressure
system settles in, however higher chances for isolated-scattered
rain/snow showers along with lower ceilings arrive after 08/12Z. Aviation

A low pressure system approaches today and begins to increase
winds across southeastern Arizona. Breezy to windy conditions are
expected through Wednesday. Widespread 15-25 mph east to southeast winds
with gusts to 35 mph are likely early Wednesday through mid-
afternoon with areas susceptible to southeast flow likely to see
20-30 mph winds and gusts up to 45 mph. Colder temperatures will
bring minimum relative humidities in the lower elevations up from
10-15 percent today to 25-35 percent Wednesday and Thursday.
Isolated to scattered rain and snow showers are possible with this
low pressure system Wednesday lingering into Thursday, with some
light snow accumulations possible in valleys east of Tucson.
