PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and 
Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in

19Z water vapor imagery showed an upper ridge over the southern
and central plains with a closed upper low over the Pacific
Northwest. At the surface, a low pressure system was noted
across western SD with high pressure over the eastern gulf. This
favored deep southerly flow and sustained moisture return
north.

For tonight through Sunday, there is little change from the 12Z
models and confidence in the forecast remains good. The biggest
change to the forecast is to go ahead with a wind advisory for the
flint hills and areas west. Models show a strong pressure gradient
of 10 to 11 millibars across the forecast area. This is supportive
of sustained winds reaching 30 mph. Additionally NAM and GFS
forecast soundings show winds around 40KT within a well mixed
boundary layer suggestive of gusts around 45 mph.  I considered just
putting the entire forecast area in a wind advisory but opted to
stay with the western two thirds where the pressure gradient force
is progged to be the strongest. Meanwhile models maintain a warm EML
with 700 MB temps ranging from +14 to +16C. This is expected to cap
the boundary layer from any surface based convection while upper
level ridging keeps shortwave activity to the west and north of the
area. So plan on hot, dry and windy conditions persisting through
the weekend. Have not made any changes to the heat advisory at this
time. Models show some slight cooling at 925 and 850MB by Sunday and
heat indices are forecast to only be around 100 degrees Sunday
afternoon. However the Heat Risk parameter which takes into account
time of year, still shows some risk to heat illness. So late shifts
may consider an extension even though heat indices are a little
cooler.

Cluster analysis of the 00Z ensembles shows there is not a lot of
difference from the ensembles and mean pattern. This lead to good
confidence in the forecast for the first half of next week. With
this in mind, have not strayed much from the NBM initialization. The
next chance for precip looks to be Monday afternoon and evening
as a weak boundary moves into northern KS, with the higher
probabilities for rain across the northern counties. Mid level
temps cool with the upper ridge sliding east and convergence
along the boundary should act as a focus for convection.
Instability look good ahead of the boundary, but bulk shear is
rather weak. So any severe risk appears to be pretty conditional
on local conditions. Perhaps there may be a risk for isolated
damaging winds given forecast soundings show DCAPE increasing to
as much as 800 J/kg.

For Tuesday and Wednesday the models prog a similar pattern with the
upper ridge just southeast of the area and southwest flow just
northwest of the area. Although there is less of a signal for a
surface feature to focus convection. So POPs remain in the forecast
ranging from around 10 percent southeast to 40 percent northwest.
There is a little more spread in the ensemble data for the end of
the forecast period. The 12Z GFS and ECMWF want to bring another
weak boundary into the area Thursday. The NBM seems reasonable with
the 30 to 40 percent chance POPs. Models also show the pattern
becoming a little less amplified and break down the thermal ridge.
This should allow temps to moderate closer to norms for late June.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

A heat advisory remains in effect for the entire area until 8 pm
Saturday. Heat indices are forecast to range from 102 to 107
degrees during the afternoon. Take precautions if spending time
outside and limit outdoor activity to the morning or evening
hours.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday

A wind advisory is posted for north central and parts of northeast
and east central Kansas Saturday from 10am until 8pm. Areas along
and west of a line from Emporia to Marysville are expected to see
sustained south winds around 30 mph with gusts around 45 mph.
This could blow around unsecured objects and make driving
difficult for high profile vehicles.
