.SYNOPSIS...A cold airmass will settle across the region through
midweek. From Thursday on into the weekend, a moisture rich
atmospheric river type setup will yield significant mountain snow
accumulations across Utah and southwest Wyoming.

&&

.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z Thursday)...A shortwave trough sweeping
through northern Utah is inducing a band of light snow across the
northern and central Wasatch Front and adjacent terrain this
afternoon. Despite sub-freezing temperatures, the mid- February
sun angle has limited accumulation to shaded and elevated surfaces
across the valleys. This band will continue to drift south and
weaken with time through the remainder of the afternoon and
evening as the upper trough begins to pull away from the region.
However, if this band is able to maintain itself later into the
afternoon and early evening, may start to see some minor
accumulation on all surfaces given the cold airmass.

As much colder temperatures spread across northern Utah, hi-res
guidance suggets lake-induced convection will likely develop
across the Great Salt Lake and spread downwind across Tooele
Valley and western Salt Lake County late evening and overnight.
Upstream dew points are in the single digits, and this dry air
will be a limiting factor in both whether lake effect convection
is able to develop, as well as the organization and intensity
should that occur. As such have included chance PoPs downwind of
the GSL overnight into Wednesday morning.

700mb temps fall near or below -20C tonight across northern Utah,
and -15C or so near Cedar City and Bryce Canyon. As a result
temperatures will fall into the single digits and teens across
most valleys overnight, with sub-zero temps in the Bear River
Valley and southwest Wyoming. With this cold airmass in place, max
temps Wednesday will remain below freezing along the Wasatch
Front and most northern/central valleys Wednesday afternoon.

.Long Term (After 12z Thursday): A significant mountain snow
event will unfold across all of Utah and southwest Wyoming
beginning Thursday morning and is expected to last through late
Saturday. This event will serve to bring an abundant amount of
snow to the Wasatch mountains, and most notably, our southern Utah
mountains. Following this storm, there is a possibility of
another storm on the horizon beginning around Sunday.

Initially, upper ridging will build in briefly ahead of an upper
longwave trough with highly diffluent flow ahead of it. Within this
flow, ample moisture will initially push inland over the Sierra as a
decaying atmospheric river. There will, however, be some more ample
moisture that may make it just south of the Sierra as the moisture
axis slides south toward southern California due to the parent
trough deepening as it traverses east across the Great Basin. 700mb
winds around 50-60kts across the West Desert appear likely which
would yield gusty southwesterly winds at the surface, though
persistent thick cloud cover may limit the ability for these winds
to mix down to the surface.

This enhanced moisture with a favorable orographic pattern across
southern Utah will bring a notable amount of snow to our southern
Utah mountains such as the Pine Valley Mountains and Brian Head,
both which could use the snowpack. Southern Utah lower valleys will
likely remain rainy through the period as snow levels raise to
around 6000ft as the system arrives. A winter storm watch has been
issued for accumulations around 6-12" across Bryce Canyon and 10-20"
across our southern mountains with locally higher amounts up to 2'
possible for Brian Head.

For northern and Central Utah, snow levels generally around 5000-
6000ft will yield a notable amount of snow for the mountains with
some valley floors seeing accumulations as well, though timing will
matter given the afternoon high temperatures remaining well above
freezing. Higher elevations are expected to see quite a notable
amount of snowfall, and as such, a winter storm watch has been
issued for the Wasatch Mountains, Western Uinta Mountains,
Wasatch Plateau/Book Cliffs, and Central Mountains where 14-24" of
snow is possible. Locally higher amounts up to 3' appears
possible in the Upper Cottonwoods and Bear River Range.
Additionally, given the flow pattern, the Wasatch Back will also
see snowfall amounts likely reaching winter storm warning criteria,
thus resulting in a winter storm watch being hoisted this
forecast cycle. around 8-14" is possible with this system.

Upper ridging begins to build in following the systems exit to close
off the weekend. Our next system appears to move in late Sunday
through early Monday as an upper trough pushes into somewhere along
the Pacific northwest. Model spread remains quite high with this
event, though impacts and accumulations appear low at this time.

.AVIATION...KSLC...Northwesterly winds will continue through
tomorrow with a brief period of gusts greater than 20kts from 22z
through 03z, perhaps an hour or two later. Light snow will also
continue through 22z, though it could last a few hours longer.
Mountain obscuration will continue through around 03z as ceilings
begin to break up / lift.

.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Scattered snow showers will
occur / are ongoing across all northern Utah and southwest Wyoming
sites through this evening with gusty conditions and MVFR CIGs
possible. As a result of the snow and low CIGs, mountain
obscurations appear likely into the evening hours. Conditions are
expected to improve later this evening across all sites as gusts
subside and ceilings lift / break up.
