.SYNOPSIS...
Warmer and dry today. Rain, wind, and mountain snow are expected
from a weak Atmospheric River starting late Wednesday morning and
continuing through Friday. Additional chances of precipitation
are expected much of next week as another pair of troughs move
inland across California.

COUNTIES...

.Morning Update...

Low clouds will continue to clear out most places west of the
mountains throughout the morning hours, though some areas near the
coastal slopes may continue to see clouds a bit later into the
day. We continue to watch for the upcoming series of waves of
precipitation slated for this week. Hi-res models are becoming
more in alignment in the start time of the precipitation starting
to push into the eastern LA basin late Wednesday afternoon through
the nighttime. Hi-res models show a more intense but narrower band
of precip moving through the region late Thursday afternoon
through Thursday night. Heaviest snow still looks to fall between
Wednesday night through Friday morning. The weekend continues to
look drier and warmer.

.Previous Discussion (244 AM Tuesday)...

Fair weather is short-lived as another upper level trough
approaches the West Coast on Wednesday. A weak atmospheric river
with ensemble mean IVT around 300 kg/m/s will push into So Cal by
late Wednesday morning ahead of the initial short wave trough,
bringing widespread light to moderate precipitation late Wednesday
morning through Wednesday night. There is a slight chance of
thunderstorms Wednesday night as colder air aloft begins to move
in. Precipitation intensity and coverage as well as thunderstorm
chances decrease during the day Thursday after the short wave
passes. A second short wave with a weaker atmospheric river (peak
IVT around 250 kg/m/s) moves in Thursday afternoon, bringing
another round of light to moderate precipitation. Instability
increases again for Thursday afternoon through Friday morning with
the second short wave for another period of a 5-10% chance of
thunderstorms, which could produce locally heavy rain and small
hail. Gusty southwest to west winds will prevail beginning
Wednesday afternoon for the mountains and deserts, then all areas
Thursday afternoon into Thursday night, weakening across the
region through the day Friday.

As far as rainfall amounts from this storm, for the coasts and
valleys there is a 50-75% chance of 0.50" or more and a 20-40%
chance of 1" or more, highest near the foothills. For the
mountains, there is a 45-75% chance of 1" or more and a 15-40%
chance of 2" or more, highest on the south slopes of the San
Bernardino Mountains. For the high deserts, there is a 25-45%
chance of at at least 0.25" but less than a 15% chance of 0.50" or
more. For the low deserts, there is a 10-30% chance of at least
0.25", highest near the foothills and near the San Gorgonio Pass.

Snow levels will be upwards of 8000 ft at the onset of
precipitation Wednesday, falling to 4000-4500 ft Thursday morning
and holding steady through the day, then falling to around
3500-4000 ft Friday morning. For the mountains near the 5500 ft
level, there is a 40-55% chance of 6" or more and a 30-45% chance
of 8" or more. Closer to the 6500-7000 ft level, there is a 70-80%
chance of 6" or more and a 30-40% chance of 12" or more. The
higher peaks of the San Bernardino mountains could see close to 2
ft of snow (25-30% chance of exceeding 2 ft).

Once the final short wave moves out late Friday, warmer and drier
weather will prevail through the weekend with high temperatures
within a few degrees of normal.

Unsettled weather takes hold again next week as another series of
upper troughs are forecast to move inland across California. There
is still uncertainty in the timing of the first trough early next
week, though overall the forecast is trending slower.
Precipitation could begin as early as Sunday night, though most
ensemble guidance is now closer to Monday morning or afternoon
for precipitation onset, continuing into Tuesday. Another trough
with more precipitation is forecast to follow sometime Thursday-
Friday.

.AVIATION...
041545Z...Coast/Valleys...SCT-BKN clouds, based 1500-3000 feet MSL,
are gradually scattering out this morning, and will clear in most by
areas by 18Z. Somewhat patchy low clouds with bases likely 1000-2000
feet MSL will increase near the coast after 05Z, expanding in
coverage and moving into inland areas within about 20 miles of the
coast through about 13Z Wed. Low clouds scattering out again 16-17Z
Wed.

Otherwise...Scattered high clouds and unrestricted vis today and
tonight.

.MARINE...
Westerly winds will strengthen and higher, steep seas will develop
Wednesday night and continue into Friday morning, generating
hazardous boating conditions. Winds of 20-25 knots with gusts to 30
knots will briefly diminish early Thursday afternoon before
restrengthening in the late afternoon. There is also a slight chance
of thunderstorms Wednesday night and again Thursday night. Winds
calm and seas diminish Friday afternoon onwards. Otherwise, no
hazardous marine conditions are expected.

.BEACHES...
A long-period swell from the west-northwest will bring elevated surf
Thursday and then high surf and dangerous swimming conditions
starting Thursday night. Surf of 4-8 feet with sets up to 10 feet
can be expected, with highest surf in southern San Diego County.
There is also a slight chance of thunderstorms Wednesday night and
again Thursday night.
