Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Diego CA
330 AM PST Sat Jan 11 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
Periods of Santa Ana winds expected into the middle of next week.
Critical fire weather conditions expected this evening through
Sunday for portions of Orange County, Inland Empire, and San
Bernardino Mountains. Another round of more widespread Santa Ana
winds is expected for late Monday through Wednesday. Forecast
becomes uncertain for the latter half of the week, but current
forecast has below average temperatures and cloudier conditions by
next weekend.
&&
.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...
Satellite imagery at 3 AM was showing clear skies across Southern
California. Weaker winds and clear skies tonight are resulting in
cooler temperatures at 3 AM compared to 3 AM yesterday for the
coast, valleys, and low desert. For the next few nights, wind
sheltered valley locations will see temperatures fall to the 30s.
Today another trough of low pressure from the interior of Canada
will dig south through the Great Basin. This will bring another shot
of cold air to the mountains and High Desert. Lows there are
expected to fall into the teens and upper 20s/low 30s early this
week.
A surface high is expected to build over the Great Basin in the wake
of the passing low pressure system. This will bring another round of
gusty north to northeast Santa Ana winds for today into Sunday. Due
to the position of the surface high over the Great Basin, strongest
winds are expected on the coastal slopes of the San Bernardino
mountains, Inland Empire, Santa Ana mountains, and inland Orange
County. Winds will weaken but remain offshore into Monday. By late
Monday, the upper level pattern becomes a bit chaotic with model
guidance indicating a closed low off of the California coast and
broad trough digging into the desert Southwest. Southern California
looks to remain sandwiched between these two systems for the first
part of the week. The flow aloft remains offshore, which indicates
additional rounds of Santa Ana winds. More information on this
weekend's Santa Ana winds and the Santa Ana winds early to mid-next
week can be found in the fire weather discussion below.
With the persistent offshore flow, marine layer low clouds and fog
are expected to be mostly absent through at least the middle of the
week. Due to the orientation of the Santa Ana winds tonight being
more northerly, weak onshore flow could potentially develop along
the San Diego County coast. Current guidance indicates a 20 to 30
percent chance of low clouds forming off the coast of San Diego
County. Guidance only has a 10 percent chance of low clouds reaching
land, so current forecast is low cloud free for now. Highs today
will be slightly below normal for the coast, with near to slightly
above normal temperatures for inland areas. A few degrees of cooling
is expected for most places Sunday and Monday, with a few degrees of
warming on Tuesay.
Model guidance really starts to diverge around Wednesday,
introducing a lot of uncertainty to the forecast for the end of next
week. Given the uncertainty in the pattern, forecast for Wednesday
through Saturday follows the NBM. There remains some hope in our
chances for precipitation. Ensemble members for both the GEFS and
ECMWF show some chance of precipitation as early as this upcoming
Thursday with increasing members into the weekend. Our forecast
follows a similar trend with chances for precipitation as early as
Thursday night for some locations, with increased chances by the
weekend. The forecast is far from certain for the end of next week,
so stay tuned in the coming days for hopefully a clearer look for
whats to come.
&&
.AVIATION...
111000Z...Mostly clear skies through Sunday. Patchy low clouds
develop offshore this morning and Sunday morning with a 10% chance
of them pushing onshore both mornings. North to northeast winds will
start to strengthen after 18z today in parts of the mountains,
coastal foothills, and Inland Empire west of I-215, with gusts 20-
30kts. Areas of LLWS and locally moderate up/downdrafts in the lee
of mountains possible. Offshore winds then strengthen and become
more widespread in mountains and coastal foothills after 02z Sunday
with surface gusts 30-40kts, locally higher, continuing for the
majority of Sunday.
&&
.MARINE...
Stronger northeast winds in the outer coastal waters Sunday morning
before sunrise, with gusts locally to 20kts near San Clemente
Island. Otherwise, no hazardous marine conditions are expected
through Wednesday.
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...
Weak to locally moderate northerly Santa Ana winds develop again by
late this morning, peaking late tonight into early Sunday morning
before quickly weakening Sunday afternoon. Winds will be strongest
on the coastal slopes of the San Bernardino mountains into the
Inland Empire and on the Santa Ana mountain foothills into portions
of inland Orange County. Peak wind gusts will be in the 40 to 55 mph
range, with gusts up to 65 on the coastal slopes of the San
Bernardino and Santa Ana mountains. Minimum daytime relative
humidity away from the coast will be 12 to 25 percent. Overnight
humidity recovery will be poor, with overnight humidity reaching 20
to 35 percent where wind is blowing. Even drier conditions are
expected on Sunday, with minimum daytime relative humidity falling
to 10 to 15 percent away from the coast. Critical fire weather
conditions are expected for inland Orange County, the Santa Ana
mountains, Inland Empire, San Bernardino mountains, and San Gorgonio
Pass. For San Diego county mountains and valleys, winds will be
noticeably weaker with any winds expected to be less than 35 mph.
Even with weaker winds, conditions will be dry and elevated to near-
critical fire weather conditions are expected.
Another round of Santa Ana winds is expected Monday through
Wednesday. There is some uncertainty surrounding wind strength and
relative humidity. Latest guidance is indicating a more easterly
component to the early to mid-week winds which indicates coverage
would be more widespread, with easterly winds into San Diego County.
The biggest uncertainty currently surrounds how dry conditions get
in conjunction with the Santa Ana winds. Current guidance indicates
at least near-critical fire weather conditions early next week, with
the potential for periods of critical conditions for valley and
mountain locations. By the end of next week, there is a potential for
a pattern change to take place, bringing increased humidity and a
slight (15 to 25 percent)chance of precipitation.
