.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Issued at 235 AM CST Mon Mar 3 2025

Synoptic overview: A deep upper-level trough is moving off the east
coast this morning, and a deep cutoff low is spinning over Nevada.
In between, we have some decent ridging over Missouri, with a little
baby shortwave moving by just south of the border. This system
brought some thunderstorms to Texas today and is now bringing
showers to northern Arkansas, but has remained south of our area.
That shortwave will continue to move east this morning, and upper-
level ridging will dominate today. We will see highs a couple of
degrees either side of 60 today.

As the low pressure system in the west continues its trek our way,
the surface pressure gradient will gradually increase. This will
result in increasing winds today and tonight, with some areas
(mainly along the plateau) seeing sustained winds 20-25 mph and
gusts up to 35 mph. Thick clouds will also begin to move in
over the course of the morning, which will help keep our low
temperatures warm tonight, in the high 40s to low 50s (normal
lows this time of year are in the low 30s).

The much-anticipated precipitation makes its way into the area by
the early morning hours Tuesday. The Day 1 SPC outlook, valid until
6 a.m. Tuesday, outlines our eastern Kansas counties in a Marginal
(1/5) risk for severe storms. These storms will be disorganized and
most likely elevated, though convective parameters do support severe
outcomes should they manage to become surface-based. This is ahead
of the main line of storms, which will begin to move through from
west to east starting later Tuesday morning, though there is some
disagreement regarding timing among the CAMs as this time. The
preceding thunderstorms will help to mitigate the amount of
instability left once the line arrives, with only a couple
hundred J/kg remaining for this high shear + low CAPE setup. If
the line organizes the way the CAMs are showing, damaging winds
may be the primary threat, though it is difficult to discern
what severe outcomes may be possible with such a messy evolution
of the system. The SPC has pulled the Slight risk (2/5) almost
completely south of the area, leaving us with a Marginal (1/5)
for Tuesday and Tuesday night.

Following rounds 1 (pre-line storms) and 2 (main line), a third
round of possibilities sweeps through as the low occludes and wraps
around. There will be a short break between rounds 2 and 3, allowing
for some heating and recovery of instability. Combined with
substantial bulk shear values and the placement beneath a cold core
low, this third round may include some low-topped supercells.
Despite the Marginal severe risk, all hazards would be possible with
these should they develop.

There is a Marginal (1/4) risk for excessive rainfall on Tuesday,
with a slightly higher risk in far southwest Missouri where the line
may train a bit. Generally speaking, official WPC rain total are
around an inch area-wide, though the NBM 75th percentile for SGF is
around 1.5 inches. Forecast PWs are in the 1.2-1.3" range, which
puts them right around the daily maximum for March 4 and above the
averaged max for this time of year. However, this system is expected
not be relatively progressive, so flooding is not a major
concern and would stay localized to areas with the highest
rainfall if it occurs at all.

As the system begins to shift off Tuesday night, a very tight
pressure gradient in its wake will cause some incredibly strong
northwest winds. It looks like wind speeds may have come down a bit,
but with sustained winds 30-35 mph and gusts up to 45 mph, a Wind
Advisory is expected to be needed through Wednesday morning.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Issued at 235 AM CST Mon Mar 3 2025

Early Wednesday morning: Round 4. Moisture will wrap around the
occluded low as it moves off, and surface temperatures right
around freezing will support the potential for rain/snow mix and
potentially some light snow accumulation on elevated or grassy
surfaces. This is not expected to be impactful, and temperatures
will warm up into the low to mid-40s quickly after sunrise.
Winds will gradually decrease through the day.

The Ozarks will be under the influence of upper-level ridging and
surface high pressure for a few days through the end of the work
week. Highs will gradually increase to a peak in the 60s Friday
before another system slides through the Plains and brings more
chances for rain Friday afternoon into Saturday morning. Both the 6-
10 day and 8-14 day CPC outlooks show a signal for above normal
temperatures in the extended (normal highs in the 50s).

.AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z TUESDAY/...
Issued at 1145 AM CST Mon Mar 3 2025

Clouds continue to increase in coverage this afternoon ahead of
an approaching system tonight into Tuesday. Isolated shower and
thunderstorm chances exist through the overnight, though
confidence remains low on coverage. More widespread activity
overspreads the area as a line of showers and thunderstorms
moves through Tuesday morning into the afternoon. MVFR to IFR
flight conditions accompany this system, with reduced
visibilities around 2 to 4 miles in addition to ceilings as a
low 700 to 1500 feet. Meanwhile, gusty south-southeast winds
will persist with gusts around 20 to 30 knots through the
period. LLWS around 40 to 50 knots is introduced around 06Z,
continuing into early Tuesday morning.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of the Missouri
Ozarks and extreme southeast Kansas.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight.

Weather hazards expected...

  Marginal hail risk.
  Marginal thunderstorm wind damage risk.
  Limited lightning risk.
  Limited non thunderstorm wind risk.
  Elevated fire weather risk.

DISCUSSION...

Though winds will be gusty up to 30 mph today, increasing moisture
will keep fire weather risk limited. Scattered thunderstorms will
develop and move west to east through the area late tonight into
early Tuesday morning. There is a marginal risk (level 1 of 5)
that these storms produce severe weather.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday.

Southerly wind gusts of 25 to 30 mph will occur Monday.

The storm system will continue through Tuesday. Some storms may
be strong to severe, especially during the morning and afternoon
hours. There is a also a marginal (level 1 of 4) risk for
excessive rainfall leading to localized flooding with this system.

Non-thunderstorm winds will also become gusty Tuesday and
Wednesday, with gusts up to 35 mph Tuesday and up to 45 mph on
Wednesday.

Rain may end as snow or rain/snow mix late Tuesday night into
Wednesday morning. No impacts are expected at this time.
