.SYNOPSIS...
Windy conditions will persist today with wind gusts up to 30-40 mph
expected along and west of the Blue Ridge through the morning
hours and 20-30 mph through sunset. Areas east of the Blue Ridge
are expected to see wind gusts of 20-30 mph through the morning
hours, and 15-25 mph through sunset. Low pressure tracks from
the southern Plains into the central Appalachians Sunday into
Monday with wintry weather for much of the region. Significant
ice accumulations look possible with this system, especially
across the NRV, higher elevations along the Blue Ridge, SE West
Virginia, SW Virginia, and the I-64 corridor.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
As of 300 AM EST Saturday...

Key Message:

1)Windy/blustery today with well below normal temperatures
expected today.

The axis of the upper level trough that that brought much of the
snow showers to the area Friday looks to be off the east coast of
Virginia and North Carolina this morning. While the axis of the
trough continues east throughout the day today, a very tight
gradient in 500mb heights will continue to remain across the region.
While the back half of this trough is expected to slowly lift north
and east throughout the day as the next system approaches from the
east, a tight pressure gradient and northwest 850mb jet look to
linger over the region. This pressure gradient and 30-50 knot 850mb
LLJ will likely continue gusty northwest winds over the region for
much of the day today, although a gradual de-intensification of
winds is expected by the afternoon and late evening. The next system
upstream, which is currently centered over southern Nevada and Utah
this morning will lead to very gradual 500mb height rises across the
region as a transient upper level ridge out ahead of this system
pushes east throughout the day. Although 500mb heights will be
rising, temperatures across the region look to remain frigid, with
daytime high temperatures remaining in the upper 20s west of the
Blue Ridge, and in the mid to upper 30s across the Piedmont. Low
temperatures Saturday night will again dip down into the teens for
much of the region, with a few localized areas in the Piedmont
hanging onto low 20s.  While temperatures will be cold, skies will
predominantly remain clear outside of western facing slopes across
SE West Virginia where upslope flow may lead to low clouds holding
on through the early afternoon hours.

Forecast confidence is high on winds and temps for today.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...

Key Points:

1. Significant wintry mix system impacts the area Sunday afternoon
into Monday evening.
2. Gusty northwest winds behind the system Tuesday into Tuesday
night.

A look at the 3 Jan 00Z NCEP Ensemble Mean 500 mb Geopotential
heights shows a low/trough across central CONUS on Sunday with a
weak shortwave ridge over our portion of the country. By early
evening  Monday, the trough is expected to have moved east and be
situated along a NY to AL line. By Tuesday evening, the trough is
expected to across the far western Atlantic with nearly zonal flow
over our region. Also, by Tuesday evening, a upstream trough is
expected to extent from the western Great Lakes region southwest to
the Four Corners region.

At the surface, Sunday evening, low pressure is expected to be
moving through the mid-Mississippi and Lower Ohio Valleys. A warm
front is noted extending east-northeast into the mid-Atlantic region
with a cold front south with the Lower Mississippi Valley. By Monday
evening, the low is expected to be off the coast of New Jersey, and
an expansive area of high pressure will extended from the Canadian
Plains south to Texas. By Tuesday evening, the high pressure will
hold fast across the center of the country. A shortwave trough is
expected to be moving south across the Great Lakes region.

Output from the 3 Jan 12Z Ensemble Situational Awareness Table shows
850mb temperatures ranging from around -9 to -4C, n-s, across the
region Sunday morning. By the early evening Sunday, values moderate
to roughly -4C to +2C, ne-sw. By Monday morning, values continue to
moderate, reaching 0C to +4C, n-s. Temperatures fall through the
day, reaching -7C to -2C, nw-se, by the early evening. Temperatures
continue downward, reaching -12C to -6C by Tuesday morning, and
continue at those values through late Tuesday night.

Mean Integrated Water Vapor Transport offers values within the 90 to
97.5 percentile of the 30-year CFSR climatology nosing into the
southwest portion of the forecast around 18Z Sunday. This level of
transport continues as the high values continue their push east
across the area Sunday night, with highest values across the
southern half of the area. Not until about 18Z Monday do these
higher values exit the southeast portion of the forecast area.

The above weather patterns offer a similar forecast to our ongoing
forecast for Sunday into Sunday night. Mid-day Sunday precipitation
reaches the southwestern section of the forecast area. During the
day it spreads southwest to northeast across the area. Initially,
the lower troposphere is cold enough the precipitation to begin as
snow. As the day progresses, we will start to see the influence of a
warm nose aloft help transition the precipitation to sleet, then to
freezing rain. The challenge is in the extent and depth of this
warmer air across the forecast region. The farther north with the
forecast area, the better chances for the precipitation to remain
snow, or at least mostly snow, through the extent of the event. The
farther south within the forecast area, the less snow, and perhaps
by late in the day Sunday, a switch to a plain cold rain, non-
freezing. This temperature pattern changes Sunday night as nighttime
brings colder values with freezing rain again a greater concern. By
Monday morning, warmer air again allow for a plain cold rain across
the south. By late Monday into Monday night, the upper trough axis
crosses the area, and we transition into cold air advection
northwest flow snow showers across the mountains with precipitation
ending across eastern areas.

Tuesday into Tuesday night, we maintain a gusty northwest flow
pattern with isolated to scattered snow showers across parts of
southeast West Virginia, south into the Northern Mountains of North
Carolina.

Confidence is high that from Sunday afternoon through Monday
afternoon the area will be impacted by a significant wintry mix.
Confidence in the specific types of wintry precipitation, their
locations, and amounts is not as high.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 300 AM EST Saturday...

Key Points:

1. Continued below normal temperatures.
2. Dangerous wind chills Wednesday night and Thursday night.
3. Daily upslope flurries across parts of southeast West Virginia.
4. Potential for a bit more robust coverage of snow showers
Wednesday night into Thursday but confidence is low at this point.

A look at the 3 Jan 00Z NCEP Ensemble Mean 500 mb Geopotential
heights shows a closed low centered along the St. Lawrence Seaway
deepening. An associated trough axis is expected to be dipping south
into the Great Lakes and Ohio Valleys Wednesday evening. An
additional upper trough is expected to be just east of the Four
Corners region. By Thursday evening the upper low is expected to
deepen even more and east east across Maine and the Canadian
Maritimes. Its associated trough axis will be nearing our region.
The Southwest US trough is expected to make little progress eastward.
By late in the day Friday, a shortwave trough is expected to eject
eastward from the Southwest US upper trough. This feature will merge
with the departing trough that was over our region Thursday.

At the surface, limited progression is expected for both a central
US ridge and a shortwave trough over the Great Lakes region. What
does change is the push of lower 1000-500mb heights into mid-
Mississippi Valley east to the Atlantic. On Thursday into Thursday
evening a general north-northwest flow continues into the region
with falling heights. The finer details get washed out in the
ensemble mean, but there may be a trailing shortwave trough heading
south into the eastern Great Lakes. For Friday, there may be a push
east of the central US ridge into parts of the Ohio Valley.

Output from the 3 Jan 12Z Ensemble Situational Awareness Table shows
850mb temperatures ranging from -14C to -10C, nw-se, during the day.
These values correspond to the 2.5 to 10 percentile of the 30-year
CFSR climatology. On Thursday, values moderate to -9C to -6C, nw-se,
by the early evening. Similar values are forecast for Friday.

The above weather patterns offer a continuation of below normal
temperatures across the area. We will remain with a pattern that
maintain northwest flow cold air advection into the region. At least
one upstream shortwave trough will have the potential to offer some
organized snow showers to mainly southeast West Virginia and perhaps
the far northern sections of the forecast area. Timing on this
feature will remain tricky, but Wednesday night into Thursday may be
the general timing. Otherwise, the northwest flow pattern may keep
daily flurries or slightly heavier snow showers over parts of
southeast West Virginia.

The combination of gusty northwest winds and below normal
temperatures will yield low wind chills Wednesday night and
Thursday. Both nights, the mountains may see values below zero. The
highest peaks and ridges may see values less than ten below zero.
The Piedmont region may experience values around 0 to the single
digits above zero.

Confidence in the above section of the forecast moderate to high
regarding below normal temperatures, but low on the timing of a
shortwave trough in the general northwest flow pattern.

.AVIATION /12Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 600 AM EST Saturday...

MVFR CIGs and VSBYs may linger off and on at BLF, LWB, and BCB
as snow showers persist through the early morning hours. BLF/LWB
should be at or near VFR by 18z today, with BCB likely lifting
to VFR before 15z. Snow showers have ended for BCB; however, a
few brief periods of light flurries can't be ruled out through
15z. All other terminals to include BCB should remain VFR
through the period, with LYH and DAN already observing mostly
clear skies.

The main threat to continue will be gusty winds across the area
for much of today. 10-15 knot sustained west/northwest winds,
with gusts of 20-25 knots look to persist for BCB, ROA, BLF, and
LWB for much of Saturday. LYH and DAN are expected to have 5-10
knot sustained winds with gusts of 15-20 knots today.
Fortunately, gusty winds do look to subside around 0z for all
terminals, with mostly higher terrain TAF sites maintaining 20
knot gusts beyond 0z for a few hours. Gusty winds look to end by
6z Sunday for all terminals.

EXTENDED AVIATION OUTLOOK...

The next storm system will impact our region with a wintry mix
as early as 18z Sunday, and moreso Sunday night into Monday.
Expect poor flying conditions in this time frame from the VA/NC
border north into the mid-Atlantic with high potential for
icing.

Should see improving conditions Tuesday outside the mountains of
WV. Winds again could be rather gusty after this system heads
east Monday night-Tuesday.

May see some light snow showers Wednesday in the mountains with
sub-VFR cigs.
