.SYNOPSIS...
A brief intermission in snow showers expected tonight under
high pressure. Very cold Friday morning. Accumulating snow is
likely Friday afternoon into the weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 155 PM Thursday...

Gradual drying is taking hold across the area as high pressure
briefly builds into the region, albeit brief. This has also resulted
in a gradual clearing of sky cover across the region, mainly across
the north, with stratus deck across much of WV showing signs of
gradually thinning out. However, until it is able to, have
maintained a chance of snow showers, or flurries in the forecast
through this evening. Any clearing that does take place however,
will be replaced by clouds streaming back into the area overnight
out ahead of the next system, which will feature a surface low that
will move east across the south, with an upper trough pushing east
into the area. Moisture streaming northward on strengthening low
level winds, along with the cold air in place, will result in snow
showers across the area once again, with a good inch or so possible
across far southern/western zones by the end of the near term
period. Snow ratios on Friday will of course not be quite as high as
with the previous event, particularly the farther south in the CWA
you are. However, with that being said, snowfall accumulations will
fall into at least the advisory range CWA wide, although there is
concern of our far southern coal fields hitting warning criteria,
along with SW VA, particularly if any heavier bands/forcing is able
to take hold. For now, we elected to add a warning to SW VA where
highest confidence exists, with the possibility that a future shift
will have to upgrade some of our southern coal field counties to a
warning.

Of other note, Friday morning low temperatures are looking to be
quite cold area wide, with recent snow cover, and a calm wind
expected, despite increasing cloud cover. Valley locations will be
particularly cold. Have continued the trend of undercutting guidance
for low temperatures Friday morning.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
As of 300 AM Thursday...

Key Points:

 * Next winter weather system arrives Friday afternoon and
   lingers through Saturday.

 * As of now, 2 to 4 inches of snow look likely for much of the
   area, with higher amounts possible in the central and
   northern mountains.

Dry weather looks to continue into Friday morning, but we're
likely already going to be clouded over as the next system
approaches from the west and southwest. However, that quickly
comes to an end as the trough axis starts to push east of the
Mississippi River. The surface low over the northern Gulf of
Mexico will then move inland over the Deep South, while a
weakening surface front moves east across the Great Lakes and
up the Ohio River Valley, which will help draw moisture up
towards our CWA. This looks likely to be an all snow event,
with only very low chances of some rain mixing with snow
initially across some of the southern valleys before quickly
changing to all snow.

The track of the southern low and how much moisture can get
drawn northward will determine how much snow we get. As an
example, just a modest SE shift in the southern low's track
compared to last night's runs likely was a contributing factor
in forecast snow amounts dropping by 0.5-1.0 inches across much
of the area. Still looks to be an advisory-level event for much
of the CWA, but a Winter Storm Warning is looking less likely
based on criteria as of now, so no watch was issued with this
forecast package. Snow ratios do look to be closer to 15:1 for
most of the area through the event, so much of what falls will
be on the fluffy side. Some of the earlier snow in the southern
coalfields and our SW VA counties may be closer to 10:1 ratio,
before that ratio increases as the column cools.

The heaviest snow across the area looks to be Friday evening and
night, and while some moderate to locally heavy snow showers
will continue in the mountains on Saturday, any lingering
precip at lower elevations should be light and diminishing.
Some upslope snow likely lingers in the mountains into Saturday
night, but high pressure building in and shifting winds more
SW'ly should cut off any remaining flurries before sunrise on
Sunday.

In terms of temperatures, we will remain below normal Friday and
Saturday, with highs generally 10 to 15 degrees lower than is
typical for mid-January. Lows Fri night may be comparatively
mild measured against recent nights, with lows from the mid-
teens in the mountains to mid-20s in the lowlands. Behind the
system, Saturday night lows are likely to be 5 to 10 degrees
colder for much of the CWA.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 330 AM Thursday...

Key Points:

 * Brief period of dry weather and possible sun on Sunday.

 * Broad and complex weather system may bring persistent clouds
   and periods of light snow for the first half of the next work
   week, and possibly beyond.

Surface high pressure and an upper-level ridge build over the
area on Sunday, and for one brief, glorious moment, much of the
area may see some sunshine! Highs will rebound somewhat under
the sunshine and light winds, with upper-20s in the mountains
and 30s in the lowlands.

Unfortunately, clouds build back in from the west Sunday night
as the next round of active weather approaches. I elect to use
that broad terminology as it is difficult to discern much in the
way of coherent individual systems next week, at least that the
forecast guidance can agree on. Rather, once the first wave
moves in on Monday, it appears that much of the eastern CONUS
will remain under the influence of a longwave upper-level trough
parked over northeastern North America through most if not all
of next week.

As such, we keep slight chance to chance POPs over most or all
of the CWA through mid-week, and in reality, this may well
extend to the end of next week. Not seeing any clear signals of
a major snow event in that time frame, but rather just
persistent clouds, and at least on-and-off light snow (and
possibly more 'on' than 'off', especially in the mountains). As
any shortwave troughs rotate around the parent upper-level
feature, periods of enhanced snow coverage and/or intensity are
likely, but hard to peg on timing with any confidence this far
out. However, as we get closer, models will likely come into
better agreement on timing of the smaller scale features, and
boosted POPs for those periods will be possible.

As for temperatures, Monday's highs will likely be very
dependent on the timing of the onset of snow and passage of the
surface front. For now, depicting an afternoon frontal passage,
we still have highs ranging from mid-20s on the higher peaks to
low or mid-30s in the lowlands, but a faster front would put a
lower cap on temps. After that, things cool off sharply heading
towards midweek, with highs potentially on the order of 20
degrees below normal. Lows could also drop to 15 degrees below
normal, but the persistent cloud cover may help prevent the
bottom from dropping out on low temperatures.

.AVIATION /19Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 1230 PM Thursday...

Widespread MVFR conditions continue to remain in stratus,
mainly east of the Ohio River. In addition, light snow showers
continue to fall from this deck at times, creating brief/local
IFR conditions.

Generally along and north of the Ohio River,
conditions have improved to VFR.

Winds will be from a westerly direction, and mainly light,
although occasional gusts in the teens to lower 20 kt range can
be expected across the lowlands through 23Z, with occasional
gusts in the 20 to 30 kt range across the mountains, also
becoming light overnight.

Expect a slow erosion of the MVFR deck across the lower
elevations of WV by around 23Z, with mountainous locations
slower to clear...possibly not until after 06Z Friday.

Otherwise, after 09Z, after MVFR stratus has eroded, expecting
VFR area wide with light surface winds for the remainder of the
TAF after 09Z Friday. However, chances for snow and
deteriorating conditions can be expected to take hold shortly
after the 18Z TAF period.
