.KEY MESSAGES...

* Periods of gusty winds with rain and high elevation snow showers
  are expected this weekend mainly from Highway 50 northward.
  Strongest wind gusts expected Saturday.

* Below average temperatures are expected this weekend, especially
  Sunday when highs will be 15-20 degrees cooler than today.

* Warmer and drier conditions with mainly light winds return next
  week.

.DISCUSSION...

The main weather feature for the upcoming week continues to be
this weekend's storm, with the rest of today being the relative
calm before that storm arrives.

For tonight, high elevation winds will increase with ridge top
gusts reaching 60-70 mph by early Saturday morning. While
conditions don't favor a strong downslope event for the wind prone
far western NV foothills in the pre-dawn hours, some of these
sites could see periodic gusts of 30+ mph prior to Saturday's main
wind event from late morning through late evening.

* WINDS:

All wind advisories remain in place for eastern CA-western NV from
US-50 northward as 50-60 kt 700 mb flow begins to mix down into
lower elevations by late Saturday morning. The peak gust speeds
(45-55 mph with higher gusts near 65 mph in wind prone areas, and
100 mph for ridge tops) will continue through Saturday afternoon
and into the evening before subsiding. South of the advisory in
Mineral-Mono counties, winds won't be as strong but gusts could
still reach the 40-45 mph range. Expect a broad range of wind
impacts for outdoor recreation, aviation, and cross wind hazards
for high profile vehicles, with areas of blowing dust downwind of
deserts and sinks in west central NV.

For Sunday, another round of breezy-gusty winds is likely with
possible lake recreation impacts, although speeds don't look as
strong compared to Saturday with gusts mainly 25-35 mph. 700 mb
flow could approach 50 kt so Sierra ridge top gusts will again be
on the strong side (up to 85 mph).

* PRECIPITATION/TEMPERATURES:

Two rounds of precip, mainly rain, are expected with the weekend
storm event. The first reaches northeast CA/far northwest NV early
Saturday morning, then the best chances shift to the Tahoe basin
during the day. Liquid amounts in these areas range mainly from
0.15-0.45" with up to 0.70" near the crest. Snow levels remain
relatively high around 8000-8500 feet with most precip occurring
during the daytime hours, so travel impacts over most passes will
be limited to wet roads, aside from up to 1" of slushy snow if a
heavier burst occurs on the highest passes such as Mt. Rose
Summit.

Elsewhere across western NV and eastern CA including the main
urban areas, strong shadowing will limit rain amounts. Latest
projections show no measurable rainfall for the valleys and only a
few hundredths for foothills around Reno/Carson City southward to
western Mono County. High temperatures on Saturday drop by about
10 degrees from today, with mainly 50s to lower 60s, except parts
of west central NV near and east of US-95 still have a chance to
reach 70 degrees before the cold front arrives.

The second round of precip will target similar areas of northeast
CA/northwest NV and the Tahoe basin late Saturday night through
early Sunday afternoon, with additional liquid amounts mainly
0.10-0.30" with up to 0.50" near the crest. Snow levels will be a
little lower, down to around 7000-7500 feet Sunday morning so
some of the passes may see up to an inch or two of snowfall. Light
rainfall has a slightly improved chance of spilling into lower
elevations from I-80 northward and into the main urban areas of
far western NV at times on Sunday, but only amounting to 0.10" or
less. Temperatures on Sunday will be the coolest of the upcoming
week for most areas, with highs mainly in the upper 50s-mid 60s
for lower elevations from I-80 southward, and upper 40s-mid 50s
elsewhere.

* NEXT WEEK

For next week, a general flat ridge pattern is expected to take
shape resulting in drier conditions, lighter winds, and a warming
trend with highs near 70 for some western NV valleys by the
middle of next week. Areas farther north near the OR border are
less likely to see as much warming due to the lower-amplitude
ridge, with periods of afternoon west breezes and possibly a stray
shower around midweek. MJD

.AVIATION...

Winds will begin to increase this afternoon with gusts 15-20 kt
at the main terminals. FL100 winds will increase further tonight
with gusts increasing to 60 kt, leading to increased turbulence
and periods of LLWS.

Peak wind impacts to aviation are expected Saturday with more
widespread turbulence and shear as FL100 wind gusts increase to
near 80 kt while surface gusts increase to 30-40 kt, and possibly
above 40 kt for far western NV terminals. Wind impacts will
continue through Sunday afternoon with continued turbulence and
shear as FL100 gusts range from 60-75 kt, although surface gusts
at the main terminals drop to the 20-30 kt range.

Periods of rain will bring lower CIGS/VIS at times with mountain
top obscurations to KTVL/KTRK during the day Saturday mainly
between 15Z-00Z, and again Sunday mainly between 12-21Z. MJD
