.KEY MESSAGES...

* Very warm temperatures again today will produce minor heat risk
  concerns and renewed snowmelt runoff, with increased breezes and
  a few late day showers in west central NV.

* A late season storm system will bring stronger winds Sunday and
  Monday and much cooler conditions through Tuesday, with chances
  for light mountain snow and valley rain showers.

.DISCUSSION...

Yesterday's taste of summer included highs of at least 90 degrees
for Fallon and Hawthorne, 87 degrees for Reno--just one degree
short of the May 9 record high, and a tied record high of 75 for
South Lake Tahoe.

* One More Summer-Like Day Today: This afternoon's highs will
  again peak in the mid-upper 80s in western NV valleys, with a
  few sites along US-95 again having a shot of touching 90. For
  Reno, the arrival of slightly cooler 700 mb temperatures when
  winds mix down today will reduce the potential (only 10-15%) of
  reaching or exceeding this date's record of 88. Afternoon
  breezes will kick up with gusts 30-40 mph across northwest and
  far western NV, producing choppy conditions on Pyramid Lake.
  While most areas remain dry, a few fast moving showers with a
  5-10% chance for thunder could develop across west central
  mainly east of US-95 from late afternoon into the evening.

* Stronger Winds and Much Cooler Sunday-Monday: A potent Pacific
  storm accompanied by a 130+ knot upper jet will approach the
  Pacific Northwest coast Sunday and move inland over WA/OR on
  Monday. This storm's initial and primary impact will be strong
  wind gusts ramping up Sunday morning and peaking during the
  afternoon/early evening, with a second round of gusty winds
  (although not quite as strong in most areas) on Monday. Sunday's
  peak gusts have a 40-80% chance of surpassing 50 mph across most
  western NV/eastern Sierra communities, with similar chances for
  wind prone sites seeing peak gusts of 60+ mph. For higher
  elevations, these winds will be nearly continuous both days with
  ridge top gusts 100+ mph at times. Expect plenty of travel and
  recreation impacts, with patchy blowing dust downwind of deserts
  and sinks in northwest/west central NV. We'll start to see
  temperatures tumble especially across northeast CA/northwest NV
  Sunday, with further cooling Monday as highs drop to the 50s and
  60s in most areas, except valleys in Mineral/far SE Mono County
  should hang on to 70s for one more day.

* Showery and Chilly Monday-Tuesday: This storm then digs
  southward into CA-NV from late Monday through Tuesday. While the
  gusty winds will keep most areas shadowed out from precip
  through Monday evening, parts of northeast CA/northwest NV and
  areas near the Sierra crest will see rain shower/isolated
  thunder chances increase during the day. The overall best
  chances for precip will spread across the remainder of the
  region late Monday night through Tuesday evening. While rainfall
  amounts will generally be 0.10 inch or less, spotty areas of
  heavier rainfall (0.25" or more) and/or small hail could occur
  especially from west central NV southward to Mono County with
  about a 15-25% chance of t-storms. Snow levels are expected to
  drop to near 5500 feet in northeast CA, 6000-6500 feet for
  Tahoe/far western NV and 7500-8000 feet for Mono County, and
  astern Sierra) Monday, then bottom out near 5500 feet regionwide
  (and even near 5000 feet at times) by Tuesday morning. Snow is
  possible on the higher Sierra passes from Monday into Tuesday,
  but will likely struggle to accumulate on area roads following
  these recent warm days. Tuesday is looking to be the coldest day
  of the upcoming week with highs only in the mid 50s-near 60 in
  lower elevations, and around 50 for Sierra communities--down
  about 25-30 degrees from this current warmup, so keep those
  jackets and sweaters handy.

* For the remainder of the week, a slow warmup to near mid-May
  averages (lower 70s western NV/lower 60s Sierra valleys) is
  anticipated with mainly dry conditions. However, another weak
  back door type system could limit this warmup and bring light
  shower chances toward next weekend. MJD

.AVIATION...

VFR conditions will prevail at the main terminals through this
weekend. However, winds will be on the increase this afternoon
leading to mountain wave conditions and isolated LLWS, with
surface gusts 25-30 kt and FL100 gusts increasing to near 45 kt.

The most significant wind impacts will occur Sunday through
Monday evening with widespread turbulence and frequent periods of
LLWS. Surface gusts at the main terminals will peak at 40-45 kt
Sunday afternoon with 20-40% chance of a few 50+ kt gusts for the
terminals near US-395, mainly from the SW but some S-SE rotor
winds could occur at times. FL100 wind gusts increase to 65-75 kt
Sunday and are likely to exceed 80 kt at times Sunday night-
Monday AM. Gusty winds continue Monday, with the prevailing
direction becoming more westerly.

Precipitation chances return late Monday and may persist into
Tuesday night with light snow possible at Sierra terminals and
rain showers elsewhere. Winds will diminish during this time
