.KEY MESSAGES...

- Showers with an isolated embedded thunderstorm or two will
  spread across the southern border counties today, but most
  areas remain dry and mild.

- A high impact storm system for Monday and Tuesday brings the
  potential for very strong winds, high fire danger, heavy, wind driven
  snow and in rain to much of southern Colorado.

- More unsettled weather Thursday and Friday with a warming and
  drying trend into next weekend.

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...

Compact upper low across west central NM will move eastward today
spreading some showers into southern portions of the forecast area
today around  the northern side of the upper low. ABQ radar already
showing some precipitation developing and expanding northward early
this morning.  Showers will fill in shortly after dawn across the
southern mountains, before spreading into the Raton Mesa region and
far eastern plains during the mid morning through mid afternoon.
HREF shows the potential for a couple hundred J/kg of CAPE so an
isolated embedded thunderstorm is not out of the question for
portions of Baca and southern Las Animas counties during the early
afternoon. Brief moderate rainfall and gusty winds up to 40 mph will
be the primary risks. Activity shifts east of the area by mid to
late afternoon. The San Juans and southern Sangre De Cristos could
pick up an inch or two of snow over the higher areas but the
remainder of southern CO will remain dry.

A lull is expected overnight as we wait for the approach of the next
potent system.  Moisture spreads back into the Continental Divide
after midnight with showers increasing again towards dawn as the
upper low takes shape across the Great Basin. Lee troughing and
increasing southerly flow on the east side of the lee trough should
keep min temperatures across the plains on the warm side. Increased
min temperatures from model blends to closer to the high res model
blends.  Should see some low stratus develop across the far eastern
plains overnight but the dry slot moving in aloft may erode the
western edge of the low level moisture eastward towards morning
keeping any stratus and low clouds out of the I-25 corridor. Kept
mention of fog across the far eastern border counties for now.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...

Monday-Tuesday...A Pacific storm system continues to be progged to
move across the region through Tuesday, bringing high impacts
in the form of very strong winds as well as snow and blowing snow.
The highest uncertainty in the impacts is the location of the
deformation band/trowal of heavier precipitation, which could bring
more precipitation in the form of snow, and higher impacts to portions
of the southeast plains.

Increasing south to southwest flow aloft is expected across the region
through the day Monday ahead of the system translating across the
Great Basin. This will bring critical fire weather conditions across the
I-25 Corridor into the southeast Plains, with breezy winds of 25
to 45 mph, and low humidity levels as temperatures warm into the
50s and 60s Monday afternoon. With that said, we have upgraded the
Fire Weather Watch to a Red Flag Warning across southeast Colorado.
Increasing moisture and lift within the flow aloft will develop
snow across the Continental Divide, especially the eastern San
Juan mountains, where we have issued a Winter Weather Advisory
through early Tuesday morning with 4 to 8 inches of snow possible.

Consensus model data still has the system lifting out across south
central Colorado Monday night, with a vertically stacked low pressure
system across east central Colorado early Tuesday morning, which
continues to dig south and east into south central Kansas through
Tuesday afternoon. With that said, should see precipitation spreading
east across the higher terrain Monday afternoon, with deformation
banded precipitation spreading into the Pikes Peak region Monday
evening and continuing spread across northern portions of the plains
into late Tuesday morning and afternoon. However, the ECMWF is still a
tad further south with the vertically stack system, which bring the
banded precipitation shield a tad further south across the plains
on Tuesday. This, as well as temperature profiles across the plains
remain a concern, with not a lot of cold air associated with this
system as snow levels fall between 5000-6000 feet into early Tuesday
morning, before rising through the late morning and afternoon.

In conjunction with the precipitation, strong gradient winds will
develop on the back side of the passing system late Monday night and
Tuesday, with latest model data indicating H7 winds of 55 to 65 kts
supporting gusts in the 60 to 70 mph range across southeast Colorado
through the day Tuesday.

With all of that said, we have issued a Winter Storm Watch from 00Z
Tuesday through 00Z Wednesday for Teller County and Northern El Paso
County/Palmer Divide, where we have the highest confidence of the
highest impacts due to heavy wind driven snow and blowing snow.
With snow totals of 4 to 8 inches and the developing strong winds,
later shifts may need to go with a Blizzard Watch/Warning for Northern
El Paso county, if current forecast data remains true. We also went
with a Winter Storm Watch for Crowley and Kiowa counties, where snow
accumulations may be on the lighter side, but combined with the strong
winds, the potential for higher impacts Tuesday morning justifies the Watch.

Further south across the plains, we have issued a High Wind Watch
for Tuesday, with strong northerly winds of 35 to 45 mph and gusts
pf 60 to 70 mph possible through the day Tuesday. This will also
lead to hazardous travel conditions, especially for high profile
vehicles on west to east orientated roadways.

Other concerns and uncertainties remain the chances for the banded
precipitation to overcome the strong downslope across southern El
Paso county, as well as the strong upslope across the Raton Mesa
and southern tier leading to more snow and higher impacts due to snow
and blowing snow than currently forecasted. Needless to say, please
stay tuned to the latest forecasts for any needed changes or additions
to the watches and warnings across all of south central and southeast
Colorado.

Beyond Tuesday, models data continue to indicate short wave ridging across
the region on Wednesday, with another eastern Pacific system bringing cooler
and more unsettled weather across the region in the Thursday and Friday
timeframe. Upper ridging then remains progged to bring warmer and drier
weather for next weekend.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Showers will spread into the southern mountains and plains this
morning before exiting eastern CO by late afternoon. Up to 2 inches
of snow will be possible for the eastern San Juans and southern
Sangre De Cristo mountains by mid day.

An isolated thunderstorm will be possible across southern portions
of Las Animas and Baca counties this afternoon.  Brief moderate
rainfall and gusty winds up to 40 mph will be the primary storm
risks.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday

A strong storm system looks to bring high impacts the region
Monday and Tuesday, with breezy winds and warm temperatures
bringing critical fire weather conditions to the southeast Plains
Monday afternoon.

Snow will spread across the higher terrain Monday afternoon and
evening, with rain and snow spreading east across the eastern
mountains and plains Monday night and Tuesday. Strong winds and
accumulating snow look to produce hazardous travel conditions
across the southwest mountains through the day Monday, and
across the Pikes Peak and Palmer Divide region Monday night
and Tuesday. Strong northerly winds across the southeast plains,
with gusts of 60 to 70 mph through the day Tuesday, will also
create hazardous travel conditions, especially for higher
profile vehicles on west to east orientated roadways.

The exact track of this strong weather system remains uncertain,
which could lead to higher impacts from snow and blowing snow
across the southeast plains than is currently forecasted. Please
continue to monitor the latest forecasts for potential changes
concerning this impactful storm system across southern Colorado.

Another storm system will bring another round of unsettled weather
across the region on Thursday and Friday, with a warming and drying
trend expected into next weekend.
