Issued at 245 PM MST Mon Jan 6 2025 Currently, upper wave diving southward toward the Great Basin this afternoon, with mid/upper level cloud shield gradually spreading eastward across Colorado. Starting to see some weak radar returns over the mountains and across wrn Colorado as of 2 pm, though haven't seen much snow in any surface obs yet. With upward motion slowly increasing through the afternoon, expect we'll eventually get some flurries/light snow over the higher terrain by sunset, though any accumulation during the daytime hours will be light. Temps will remain rather steady for the rest of the day, with a mix of 20s/30s will persisting. Tonight/Tuesday, upper wave dives southward into the Desert SW, leading to widespread isentropic upglide developing over much of Colorado this evening. As a result, expect snow to develop at most locations by late evening, becoming steadier/heavier overnight as upward motion slowly increases. Snow then continues through most of the day on Tuesday, though intensity/rates really decrease in the afternoon as vertical motion fades with upper low continuing to dig and mid-level wind field weakening. Starting to see some hints of perhaps a window of slightly more intense vertical motion in a few models (HRRR/RAP/18z NAM) in the 4 am to 10 am time period, as mid level flow sly flow increases to around 20 kts for a short time. As a result, have seen a upward trend in model snowfall forecasts since 12z, especially El Paso/Pueblo/Fremont Counties, where a few solutions now show storm totals over 6 inches. Snow will be low water content, as snow ratios are 15-20:1 or greater for much of the period, which can sometimes lead to an impressive build up of fluff, especially near the higher terrain. For now, will keep advisory in place for Pueblo/Colorado Springs/Canon City areas, but will bump up snow totals into the 3-6 range. Still not enough confidence to bite on the bigger amounts and a potential warning yet, but we could get close, especially Cheyenne Mountain/Fort Carson/Penrose areas if mesoscale models are right. Up to 6 for the Wets/Teller County, though if trend toward stronger mid level upslope winds continues, evening shift may need to bump up amounts and add an advisory here as well. Remaining mountains and valleys should be in the 1 to 4 inch range, with 2 to 4 on the plains to the east of I-25, lowest amounts near the KS border. Temps to go nowhere on Tue with teens and 20s at best at most locations, though fairly light surface winds will keep wind chills above zero. && .LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/... Issued at 245 PM MST Mon Jan 6 2025 Upper trough in place at the start of the period will be deepening across the region, though will also be sliding to the south. In this setup along with drier air filtering in, will see any remaining light snow during the evening hours diminish and with any additional amounts expected to be light. With a rather cold air mass in place, fresh snow pack, and light winds with clearing skies, rather chilly temperatures are anticipated over southern Colorado. While subzero temperatures are likely over the mountains and mountain valleys, there is increasing confidence for widespread single digit lows over the plains. Did lower temps, but feel additional downward adjustments may be needed. Winds will not be strong, so wind chills shouldn't stray too much from the temps. Some weak upper ridging will occur on Wednesday, though this will be brief as an additional trough slides south across the region. Anticipate this energy to slide across the region Thursday into Thursday night, providing additional snow to the area. Can't rule out area wide snow development, but would expect most of the development to stay confined to the higher terrain. Chance for snow in anyone location should be brief, and don't really anticipate much snow with this next system. Highly amplified trough finally shifts to the east by Friday, though pattern remains active with an additional trough moving into the western CONUS. There is some model variability as to the overall trend of this next trough as it pushes east into the weekend. The overall trend for the weekend into early next week though, will be for a large scale trough to be in place across the region. This will support below normal temperatures along with periodic snow chances. At this time, confidence with any details is low at this time. && .AVIATION /00Z TAFS THROUGH 00Z WEDNESDAY/...
