.SHORT TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Issued at 201 PM MDT Wed Aug 6 2025

Currently, hotter today across the region as high level cloudiness
has decreased, and a few spots on the plains were at/slightly above
100f as of 2 pm. High-based convection developing over the mountains
at mid-afternoon has produced a few cloud to ground lightning
strikes, though doubtful much rain is reaching the ground given
surface dewpoints in the 20s/low 30s. More concerned about
lightning/gusty winds and potential for fire starts, especially
back toward the Continental Divide where fuels remain very dry.
Tonight, loss of heating will end any convection quickly this
evening, with clearing skies and decreasing winds by midnight.

Thursday looks like the hottest day of the season so far, as
mid/upper level temps remain very warm (18-20C at 700mb), while w-sw
flow at the surface and aloft increases, leading to deep mixing
across the region. Nudged up blended guidance temps a couple degf,
which gets us to record tying levels at COS/PUB, with ALS just a
degf off. Will note that at least some MOS guidance is 1-3 degf
hotter than current forecast, though would like to see 700mb temps
solidly above 20C before going with more extreme values. Current
heat advisory looks for the El Paso/Fremont/Pueblo counties and
portions of the sern plains looks on track and didn't make any
changes. Red Flag Warnings for the central mountains/upper Arkansas
Valley also look good, with wind/humidity farther south in the San
Juans just under critical fire thresholds. Another round of high-
based convection possible, mainly over the mountains, though cut
back pops a bit from previous forecast given rather sparse
reflectivity Thu afternoon in many CAMs.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Issued at 201 PM MDT Wed Aug 6 2025

Updated the longer term forecast for Friday to add a Heat
Advisory for Pueblo/El Paso/Fremont Counties, where temps remain
within a degf or two of Thursday's readings. Didn't expand heat
highlights on the plains yet, where readings may drift down just
a couple degf below the 105f threshold, though we'll be very
close. Also added a fire weather watch for the Central Mountains
and San Luis Valley Friday afternoon/evening, where winds will
be strong enough (gusts over 25 mph) to create critical
conditions. Considered adding the San Juans to the watch as
well, though held off at this point as winds are lighter here
and RH slightly above the 15 percent threshold. Remainder of the
forecast on track with a trend toward cooler weather and
increasing thunderstorm chances, especially from Sunday into
next week.

Previous discussion below...

Thursday night-Friday night...Latest model data continues to indicate
a modest increase in westerly flow aloft, as a broad upper trough
translates across the Intermountain West and Northern Rockies through
the day on Friday. Models continue to support drier air within the
westerly flow aloft moving into the Central Rockies on Friday, with
only a few high based showers and storms expected across the higher
terrain Friday afternoon and evening. The increasing westerly flow and
lee troughing across the plains will bring breezy westerly winds of
15 to 30 mph across the area Friday afternoon, strongest across the
higher terrain, where critical fire weather conditions may be met once
again across the Central Mtns and into the San Luis Valley. The downslope
flow will also help warm temperatures into the 90s and lower 100s across
the plains, with highs in the 60s to lower 80s across the higher terrain
on Friday. With the well above seasonal, near record temperatures once
again on Friday, will need to monitor for the potential for another heat
advisory for portions of the plains.

Friday night-Tuesday...Models remain consistent with a pattern change
as passing Upper Midwest wave Friday night helps to develop a cooler
northwest flow pattern into the weekend, as upper level ridging builds
back across the Desert Southwest and into the Great Basin through early
next week. NBM data supports this cooler (temperatures back to around
seasonal levels) and wetter pattern, mainly across the eastern mountains
into the southeast Plains where the best available moisture will be in
place. Further west, ensemble data supports drier air within the flow
keeping temperatures at to slightly above normal, and very little chance
of measurable precipitation.

Wednesday and beyond...Upper ridging starts to flatten across the Rockies
once again, with temperatures warming back to above seasonal levels area
wide. There is some support within the ensemble means of increasing
available moisture into late next week, which would bring better
chances of daily showers and storms, especially over and near the higher
terrain. Time will tell.

VFR conditions are expected at KALS, KCOS, and KPUB through 24
hours. After a period of relatively light winds overnight, flow
increases this afternoon, out of the west-southwest at all three
terminals. Gusts around 20-25 knots will be possible. While some
shower and thunderstorm activity will be possible during the
afternoon, coverage is too spotty and confidence in impacts to the
terminals are too low to include any precip in this round of TAFs.
Thursday evening, winds lighten once again, though mid-level clouds
are expected to linger.

The hot, mainly dry and breezy weather will keep elevated to

the end of the work week. A Red Flag Warning is in effect Thursday
afternoon and evening across the Central Mountains into portions
of Fremont county. Please avoid activities which could start a
fire.

A few isolated high based afternoon and evening showers and
storms will be possible both Thursday and Friday, mainly over the
higher terrain.

A cold front will move across Eastern Colorado later Friday,
which will bring in cooler temperatures and better chances of
daily showers and thunderstorms for the weekend and into early
next week, especially across the Eastern mountains and plains.
