.KEY MESSAGES...

- Areas of light rain/drizzle today and tonight, especially over
  the eastern mountains and I-25 corridor. An isolated
  thunderstorm possible as well, mainly over the eastern
  mountains/along the NM border

- Critical fire weather conditions remain in the forecast today
  and Saturday for the San Luis Valley, with widespread high
  fire danger becoming more and more likely on Sunday and
  Monday.

.UPDATE...
Issued at 1137 AM MDT Fri Apr 25 2025

Working on an update to reduce or eliminate thunderstorm chances
for many locations today/this evening, as instability looks
limited given low clouds and very cool conditions across the
area. Will keep some isolated pops in place for the ern
mountains and along the NM border, where a few 100 J/KG of
instability may develop late in the day, and will continue tsra
chance over the far sern plains for much of the night, as a few
CAMs suggest ern NM convection may brush ern Las Animas/Baca
Counties late.

For the afternoon package, will likely lower pops and tsra
chance for many locations Sat, as models show limited CAPE and
SPC has shifted the SWODY2 marginal out of the area. More on
this in the afternoon discussion.

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...

Currently..

On the broad scale, satellite imagery reveals troughing to our west,
with our incoming low still off the coast of the Pacific Northwest.
This incoming low will define our weather pattern for the next
several days. Closer to home though, satellite imagery shows low
clouds already developing over much of the I-25 corridor and our
southeast plains, with ongoing showers and weaker thunderstorms over
the lower Arkansas River Valley as of 2 AM. Temperatures are mainly
in the 50s and low 60s as of 2 AM, with dewpoints in the 40s and 50s
on the plains.

Today..

For many of us, today's forecast will be characterized by cooler
than normal temperatures, chances for showers and weak
thunderstorms, and lots of cloud cover. As the trough to our west
amplifies and southwest flow aloft increases though, the San Luis
Valley and our westernmost mountains will see temperatures closer to
normal with highs in the 70s for the SLV, and 50s and 60s for higher
terrain locations. From the SLV westward, expect dry conditions with
gusty southwesterly winds. High fire danger is expected in the San
Luis Valley, where a Red Flag Warning remains in effect from Noon
through 8 PM. On the plains, highs today look to top out mostly in
the mid to upper 50s, with a few low 60s possible over the southern
I-25 corridor where downsloping winds and compressional warming will
be strongest. With our cooler and more stable airmass in place,
chances for severe thunderstorm development seem meager for today
for most locations. The main exception will be over the eastern
mountains and the southern I-25 corridor, where early clearing will
help to bring in some more instability. High res model guidance
suggests that these areas could realize anywhere from 700 to 1000
J/Kg of CAPE today, which could lead to a few stronger storms. The
other wildcards would be the low end risk for high shear/low
CAPE severe development over the southern I-25 corridor or over
Fremont County. Both of these areas are forecast to have around
60kt of bulk shear this afternoon, so any storms that do manage
to fire in these areas have a low end potential of becoming
severe.

Tonight..

As easterly and southeasterly upslope continue and even deepens
across the I-25 corridor this evening, light showers, drizzle, fog,
and low clouds are expected to linger through the overnight hours.
High res model guidance suggests that highest chances for precip
tonight will be over our mountains/plains interfaces in El Paso,
Teller, Fremont, and Pueblo counties, along with the Wet Mountains
and the Palmer Divide. Temperatures remain fairly moderate thanks to
continued cloud cover. Most plains locations look to fall into the
40s. The San Luis Valley, and many mountain locations, look to fall
into the 30s.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...

Saturday..

Southwest flow aloft continues to increase on Saturday as the low
approaches from our west. Models have slowed its progression
somewhat, bringing it onshore over California by Saturday afternoon.
Warming and drying will continue for western portions of our
mountains and the SLV on Saturday, which has resulted in the
continuation of a fire weather watch for the SLV for Saturday
afternoon. For our eastern mountains and our plains though,
shortwave energy embedded in the longwave trough looks to spark
another round of showers and thunderstorms on Saturday, some of
which could be on the strong side. Daytime highs on Saturday will be
warmer than today but just a few degrees above normal. Most plain
locations look to climb into the upper 60s to mid 70s, with low 70s
across the San Luis Valley as well.

Sunday and Monday..

Models continue to drag the incoming low to our north through this
period, which looks to leave us in the "dry and southwest windy"
part of this system.. This will likely mean widespread and fairly
high end critical fire weather conditions for both Sunday and
Monday, depending on where fuels have been deemed critical. All
zones are expected to see dry and windy conditions, with only slight
chances for showers and thunderstorms over our central mountains and
the higher elevations of the Pikes Peak region on Monday as the
system finally passes to our north. Temperatures will be the warmest
of the period on Sunday, with many plains locations warming well
into the mid and upper 80s. A few 90s will be possible. The SLV
looks to warm into the 70s as well. We will begin to cool down
behind the system on Monday, though temperatures look to remain
above normal for most.

Tuesday Onwards..

Models show less consistency from mid-week onwards, though most are
still showing a secondary low forming further south around the
Tuesday/Wednesday timeframe. So far, this second system still looks
more promising for precipitation chances, though not all models
close the low off, and some pull it further south. So far, ensemble
guidance suggests that our best chances for showers and storms will
come through on Wednesday, as the low passes to our southeast.
Models hint at another low for the late period as well!

winds this afternoon.

At KCOS and KPUB, expect MVFR conditions to trend toward IFR late

for window of LIFR cigs/vis 09z-15z Sat as precip weakens and fog
becomes more prevalent, then slowly clearing late Sat morning

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

Isolated thunderstorms are possible over the eastern mountains and
along the New Mexico border from Trinidad eastward this afternoon
and evening. Lightning, hail up to dime size and wind gusts of
40-50 mph will be possible with any storms.

Over the San Luis valley, critical fire weather conditions are
anticipated this afternoon.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday

For Saturday, isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms will
be possible, mainly across the eastern mountains and plains. Wind
gusts to 45 mph and pea size hail will be possible along with
cloud to ground lightning.

Over the San Luis valley, critical fire weather conditions are
anticipated on Saturday.

On Sunday, there is a marginal risk of severe thunderstorms over
the far eastern plains of Colorado. Wind gusts to 70 mph and hail
up to the size of quarters will be possible.

Widespread critical fire weather conditions will be possible on
Sunday across a large part of the region due to strong southwest
winds and low humidity values. These critical fire weather
conditions may continue into Monday along the Colorado and New
Mexico border.

Into next week, unsettled weather is anticipated and we will
likely have a chance of showers and thunderstorms each day over
the region.
