Issued at 215 PM MDT Sat Mar 15 2025 Currently...Overall (relatively) nice day over the region early this afternoon, as winds are much less than yesterday. Temps at this hour were generally in the 40s most of the plains with 30s in the valleys and 10s and 20s in the mtns. With the mid level trough over the region, snow showers were pretty widespread over the higher terrain, especially over the mtns. A peak at CDOT web cams over the passes were showing mainly wet pavement, so impacts are likely minimal. Next 24 hours... Relatively quiet pattern. Only main concern in the short term will be marginally Red Flag conditions developing over parts of the plains tomorrow afternoon, mainly along the I-25 corridor from the Springs south to the NM border, and across Kiowa and Crowley counties. Otherwise, temps will be warming up tomorrow and expect to see temps overall about 10F warmer than today over most of the region. Winds will be on the increase once again tomorrow, with the strongest winds over the central and southern mtns, an the highest elevations of the Pikes Peak region. It will be dry across all of the region tomorrow. \/Hodanish && .LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/... Issued at 215 PM MDT Sat Mar 15 2025 Models are in good agreement through much of the extended, with fire weather concerns through Tuesday evening. We will then see a return of cooler conditions with snow possible for portions of the area mid week. Sunday night through Wednesday...fire weather will be the main concern through this period for much of southern Colorado. Flat upper ridging Sunday night will give way to increasing zonal westerly flow ahead of a deepening upper trough by Tuesday. Models in good agreement with lee troughing developing Monday morning with strong mixing by Monday afternoon. This will spread strong winds east across the Plains, and allow for humidity values to drop into the single digits across the Plains. The southern I-25 corridor is of concern Monday morning. The FV3 and ARW high-res guidance is suggesting downslope wind potential Monday morning. Strong surface winds early in the day are possible along the lee of the southern Sangre de Cristo Range, before gusty winds spread eastward by early afternoon. Started a Fire Weather Watch early here given the potential for downslope winds. The critical fire weather conditions will then spread east Monday afternoon, with westerly wind gusts 35 to 45 mph possible. High temperatures on Monday will warm through the 70s to near 80 across the Plains. Flow aloft will continue to increase Monday night into Tuesday morning as an upper trough shifts east into Utah. Strong winds will likely continue through the overnight period Monday night, with the potential for more downslope winds along the lee of the Sangre de Cristo Range. Humidity recoveries look poor, upper teens to near 20 percent, and with the potential for strong winds continuing overnight, opted to keep the Fire Weather Watch going overnight for Huerfano and western Las Animas Counties. The upper trough will shift east into Colorado on Tuesday with snow moving into the Continental Divide late Monday night into Tuesday morning. Very strong winds ahead of the upper trough will spread across the Plains Tuesday morning. Gusts in excess of 50 mph are possible and humidity values will once again fall quickly. Issued a Fire Weather Watch for most of the Plains for Tuesday. The main caveat will be a cold front that will race south across the Plains, and how quickly moisture returns behind the cold front. Current timing for the front looks like mid afternoon, with westerly winds turning northerly behind the front Winds will remain strong behind the front, but humidity values will likely begin to rise. Overall, critical fire weather conditions look possible through much of the afternoon. Moving to precipitation, snow will be ongoing across the Continental Divide all day on Tuesday before coming to an end on Wednesday. Snow rates do not look overly high, with most areas along the Continental Divide seeing the potential for 3 to 6 inches. Snow will also spread eastward Tuesday night into Wednesday morning behind the cold front. Snow looks to remain above 6 kft, with less than an inch expected.
