.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Issued at 305 AM MST Mon Feb 17 2025

Today: The start of the new week will bring wintry weather to the
higher terrain, with quieter weather prevailing elsewhere for south
central and southeastern Colorado. Westerly to northwesterly flow
aloft will increase in response to a fading shortwave pushing over
the area during the day. While no major synoptic forcing is
anticipated, orographic forcing will increase, especially along the
central mountains. This forcing, along with modest Pacific moisture
in place, will allow for snow showers to bloom along the along the
central mountains, where forcing will be greatest, through much of
the day, but will steadily expand in coverage during the mid
afternoon heading into the evening for the rest of the higher
terrain. Given the increasing flow, at least isolated, though light,
snow showers are expected across the mountain valleys as well as
they are pushed off of the higher terrain. Elsewhere, dry conditions
are anticipated throughout the day. Otherwise, clouds will slowly
increase throughout the day for the entire area, with breezy
conditions for many, with the strongest winds along the mountains
where gusts will be around 45-50 mph. Looking at temperatures, areas
west of the I-25 corridor will remain more mild given downsloping
westerly winds, with the valleys in the mid 30s to upper 40s, and
the mountains in the 20s to mid 30s. As for the plains though, it'll
be a battle between the downsloping westerly winds, and an arctic
front/airmass sagged across this localized area. The question will
be can the downsloping winds keep the front pushed eastward further
across the far eastern plains? The answer, probably not - models
generally under do the westward extent of the heavier arctic
airmasses, and given this, will lean on the colder side of guidance
for much of the plains. Given this, much of the plains will warm
into the upper 30s to upper 40s. With that said though, the westerly
winds are expected to win out in the typical gap flow prone areas
and along the Raton Mesa, helping to keep these areas in the low to
mid 50s for the day.

Tonight: For Monday night, wintry weather starts to expand across
much of south central and southeastern Colorado. Synoptically,
broader troughing will start to push southeastward over the region,
bringing a modest uptick in synoptic support, and maintaining the
strong orographic forcing. With this forcing, and modest Pacific
moisture still remaining, snow showers will continue along the
mountains overnight, with the greatest coverage of snow showers
along the central mountains where orographic forcing will be
strongest. Like Monday day though, snow showers are anticipated to
push off the higher terrain and spill across the mountain valleys,
though will be more scattered to numerous in nature given the uptick
in support overhead. As for the plains, the aforementioned arctic
front/airmass will surge westward early Monday evening, bringing an
increase in surface forcing as easterly winds upslope across this
area. This surface upsloping, along with the broader synoptic
support, will allow for flurries to light snow to blossom across the
plains. While totals are expected to remain low, around and less
than 1 inch, this snow in combination with the colder temperatures
pushing in may allow for slick areas along roadways overnight.
Beyond all of that, cloud cover will continue to increase Monday
night, with overcast skies expected for many by Tuesday morning, and
with winds lessening through the night, with winds around 10 mph for
many. As for temperatures, areas generally west of the I-25 corridor
will drop and be chilly, but the cloud cover will limit ultimate
cooling potential. Given this, the valleys and mountains will fall
into the low 10s to low 20s. The plains on the other hand, will fall
to below seasonal values as the arctic air pushes westward, with
single digits expected for the far eastern plains, and low 10s for
around the I-25 corridor.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Issued at 305 AM MST Mon Feb 17 2025

Tuesday and Wednesday...Broad upper trough of low pressure will be
in place across the Rocky Mt region and the Great Lakes region on
Tue, then shortwave ridging on Wed ahead of another approaching
upper low.

For Tue, upper dynamics and moisture streaming across the
state, combined with persistent easterly upslope flow at the surface
across the plains, will mean an overrunning set-up with continued
snow for the higher terrain, and light snow or flurries across the
plains.

For Wed, the shortwave ridge will help dry things out but
very cold conditions will persist for the eastern plains as cold
easterly surface winds hold fast.

For both days, the llvl cold pool looks to be somewhat shallow, as
the high valleys, Teller County, and even the western half of
Fremont County, will be much warmer than the majority of the eastern
plains. The depth of the cold pool and the terrain will dictate high
temps both days. Look for highs in the teens and 20s across the
eastern plains, while the high valleys and much of Teller County
will climb into the 30s to around 40F.

As for Tue night and Wed night, the incoming shortwave ridge will
help produce clearing skies which will in turn allow the mercury to
plummet. The coldest spots will be the far eastern plains near the
Kansas border, with overnight lows below zero therefore an Extreme
Cold Watch remains in place there. Lows Tue night will be 5 to 15
above for the high valleys, and 10 above to 10 below for the plains.
Wed night will be slightly warmer, with lows in the teens to around
20F for the high valleys, and zero to around 10F for the plains.

Thursday...A closed upper low drops down out of the Pacific NW and
pushes into the Great Basin on Thu, providing temporary ridging for
CO while introducing some more moisture into the western half of the
state. The question will be if there will be enough westerly flow to
help scour out the llvl cold pool hanging out across the eastern
plains. Plan on continued snow chances across the higher elevations,
and especially along the Continental Divide from Wed night through
Thu, along with high temps in the 20s and 30s across the plains, and
40s for the high valleys.

Friday through Sunday...Big discrepancies in the long range models
for the upcoming weekend. While models do indicate another upper low
crossing the Great Basin and Four Corners regions on Fri, there is
disagreement on strength of this feature and what it will mean for
realized conditions across the forecast area. The operational GFS
indicates multiple upper shortwaves riding the northwest flow aloft
across the state, which would keep conditions active. Meanwhile, the
EC points at dry northwest flow aloft as an upper ridge starts to
push in. The extended procedure output paints a steady warming trend
with dry conditions into the weekend, and at this point see no need
to stray from this path. However, the weekend weather outlook will
likely go through some adjustments over the next few days. Moore

this evening into tomorrow morning, with the snow ending after
sunrise and cigs lifting somewhat by late in the period. Some
gusty east winds will be possible at KPUB early this evening.

For KALS, VFR next 24 hours. Only exception is around sunrise
tomorrow where there may be a period of low cigs and snow
showers as a disturbance moves across. KALS should remain OUT OF

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Snow showers will increase along the mountains through the day,
with snow showers expanding in coverage tonight for much of south
central and southeastern Colorado. The heaviest snow will remain
along the mountains, with generally 3-6 inches for most ranges,
and 5-9 inches for the Sawatch Range. Mountain passes and roads
may become slick and snow covered throughout the day, but
especially tonight when snow picks up in intensity. Light snow
around 1 inch is expected for the valleys and plains, and while
totals are lower, this snow in combination with colder air tonight
could cause slick spots on roads tonight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

Periods of light snow are expected in the high mountains Tuesday,
with a chance of snow lingering through Thursday. There is a
chance of light snow across the San Luis Valley and southeastern
Colorado through Tuesday afternoon.

Much colder temperatures are expected from Tuesday into Thursday
morning, with highs in the teens and 20s and lows in the single
digits above zero from I-25 westward and the single digits below
zero over the eastern plains. The coldest temperatures will be
Wednesday and Thursday morning.
