Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will remain in place through today providing mild
temperatures and fair weather. A cold front and strengthening
low pressure system will impact the region Thursday night,
bringing widespread rainfall. High pressure returns Friday with
cooler and windy conditions, then another weak cold front will
pass through late Saturday. Cool high pressure will return
briefly for Sunday, then another system will impact the region
early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Ridge of high pressure over the region providing a chilly
morning with clear skies and light winds. This ridge will
gradually stretch and split through tonight, with our more
dominant half ending up the one to our northeast. This will
allow winds to become more southeasterly this afternoon and
tonight, resulting in an onshore flow. Warm advection aloft will
be accompanied by increasing high clouds as we head through the
day, but that shouldn't stop inland areas from flirting with
70. Coastal areas will remain in the cool 50s.

Tonight, the onshore flow likely leads to areas of low clouds,
fog and drizzle creeping inland from the coast, mainly after
midnight. Lows will be notably milder than this morning, with
40s in most areas.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Mild to start the period into Thursday, then a potent system
will bring widespread rainfall, windy, and cooler conditions for
Thursday night into Friday.

A decoupled trough axis will push toward the East Coast by late
Thursday. As the associated jet streak begins to decouple late
Thursday night, the split jet structure is expected to yield
strong diffluence aloft by early Friday. The trough will pass
quickly offshore on Friday as brief shortwave ridging briefly
builds into the area. At the surface, ridging will weaken and
retreat offshore into Wednesday night as strong low pressure
passes across the Great Lakes. This system's cold front will
approach the East Coast by Thursday evening. Meanwhile, the
previously mentioned split jet aloft is expected to result in
cyclogensis along the frontal boundary Thursday evening into
the night. By Friday morning, a strong (~990 mb) coastal low
will be pushing east across southern New England and offshore
with high pressure building from the west.

Wednesday night will be mild with lows near 40 degrees for most
areas. The light southeast winds and retreating surface ridge
should allow for marine stratus and fog to spread inland through
the night. Thermal profile support some drizzle development as
well, so long story short, then mention and coverage of fog and
drizzle was increased across the board.

Thursday will also be quite mild with temperatures surging well
into the 60s for inland areas by the afternoon thanks to
strengthening southerly flow and warm advection ahead of the
approaching system. South to southeast winds increasing to 10-20
mph, with gusts upward of 30 mph possible, especially across
the coastal plain. Thursday will be mostly cloudy with early low
clouds and fog giving way to abundant mid and high clouds late.
The first half of the day will be dry (aside from any lingering
drizzle early), then a north to south oriented band of light to
moderate rain will develop and push into the area from west to
east by mid to late afternoon.

The bulk of the rainfall will occur Thursday evening into the
overnight period for much of the area along a strengthening
deformation zone, formerly the approaching cold front. Forecast
rainfall totals range from around 0.5" to 1" across the area,
though some localized amounts greater than 1" are certainly
possible where banded rainfall is more persistent.

The most notable forecast change with this update was the
increased confidence of strong winds developing as the coastal
low strengthens while pushing offshore into early Friday
morning. Low level winds fields on the back side of the low
pressure system increase to around 40-50 kts. With cold
advection and sharp pressure rises coinciding with this, it
appears probable that strong northwest winds will begin mixing
down to the surface as the low departs late Thursday night
through Friday morning. For now, we've increased the wind
forecast to 20-30 mph with peak wind gusts to the 40-45 mph
range, although strong gusts near 50 mph are certainly possible.
A Wind Advisory may be needed for the entire area if this
forecast trend holds. Temperatures will fall into the mid to
upper 30s for most areas by Friday morning, and near to below
freezing north of I-78. A brief transition to snow could result
in a dusting in the higher elevations of NW NJ and the southern
Poconos.

Some rain could linger early in the morning for portions of
northern and central New Jersey, but we'll begin drying out
quickly by midday Friday with skies turning sunny. Northwest
winds will remain near 20-30 mph into the early afternoon
before diminishing, with gusts of 40-50 mph possible across the
entire area. High temperatures will be cooler, mainly in the
upper 40s to mid 50s, and the windy conditions and dry air will
certainly make it feel cooler.

Upper level ridging moves in for Friday Night into Saturday,
with high pressure at the surface sliding by to the south. This
brings tranquil weather to kick off the weekend, with winds
weakening quickly as we get into Friday Night. Most of the
deterministic and ensemble guidance has a weak shortwave moving
through later on Saturday, though this system looks moisture
starved. Cannot rule out a few light showers though north and
west of the I-95 corridor late Saturday, but this system looks
like nothing of significance and some guidance has the entire
area staying completely dry. Overall, PoPs are around 20% or so
for the Lehigh Valley and Poconos.

Sunday through Sunday Night looks quiet with another area of
ridging moving in before a digging and deepening trough
approaches for the start of next week. This will result in a
surface low lifting into the Great Lakes, and dragging a cold
front through our region. This will be the main system to watch
in the long term as it looks like widespread rain is likely at
some point to start next week. The incoming trough doesn't look
like it will be in a hurry to depart either, which should bring
unsettled conditions through at least the middle of next week.
Overall, at the very least, it appears some much needed rain is
on horizon.

Temperatures will be near or slightly above normal for late
March through the long term period with highs getting into the
mid to upper 50s, with some 60s mixed in across the southern
half of the region. Lows will generally be in the 30s.

There is a risk of rapid wildfire spread across parts of eastern
Pennsylvania this afternoon. Temperatures topping out in low
60s in the mountains to near 70 in Berks County, with surface
dew points remaining in the 30s, will result in minimum RHs
around 25-35 percent this afternoon. Winds today will be around
10 mph for much of the area, though some gusts approaching 20
mph will be possible for across the Lehigh Valley and southern
Poconos. The last day and a half also featured gusty winds and
low humidity, which likely reduced moisture levels in the fine
fuels significantly. Therefore, a Special Weather Statement has
been issued for Berks County northeastward to Monroe County in
Pennsylvania. Further southeast, lighter winds and greater fuel
moistures likely limit rapid fire spread risk.

...Increased Risk of Rapid Fire Spread This Afternoon...

There is an increased risk for rapid fire spread this afternoon
across portions of eastern Pennsylvania. Minimum relative humidity
values will be between 20 and 30 percent combined with south-
southeast winds near 10 mph and gusts of 15 to 20 mph. High
temperatures this afternoon will range from the low 60s to near
70. These conditions along with the continued drying of fine fuels
could support the rapid spread of any fires that ignite, which
could quickly become difficult to control.

Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. Be sure to properly
extinguish or dispose of any potential ignition sources, including
smoking materials such as cigarette butts.
