.SYNOPSIS...
Rain returns today with a crossing warm front. A strong cold
front will follow tonight into early Monday, with rain and
strong wind gusts. Windy conditions will continue into Tuesday
as temperatures turn sharply colder. Rain will change to snow
on Monday, and continue Tuesday, with the most impactful
accumulations expected across the Interstate 80 corridor and in
the ridges. Cold weather and periodic snow chances will then
continue for the upcoming week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
KEY MESSAGES:

A deepening shortwave trough will advance to the Central CONUS
today. A deepening surface low is progged to track from the
Plains to southern Lake Michigan by late in the day. An initial
shortwave in SW flow ahead of the main trough will cross the
Upper Ohio Valley region today, in warm and moist advection.
The surface low's associated warm front is also expected to
lift north across the Upper Ohio Valley region today, spreading
rain across the area. The rain duration will likely be more
brief south of PIT, with this area south of the warm front by
mid morning. There could also be an isolated rumble of thunder
along the front with some minimal elevated instability.

The rain will taper off from S-N as the front lifts north
through the day. Much warmer temperatures are expected after
the passage of the warm front, as the wind veers from the E to
the S.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...

The upper trough and surface low will continue to advance to
the Great Lakes region tonight. The low will pull a strong cold
front across the region overnight into early Monday morning. A
line of showers is expected to cross the region along and ahead
of the front. Model soundings show a strong wind field aloft,
and some of these winds could mix down with this line. Issued a
Wind Advisory, starting at 1 AM, as this front approaches the
western portion of the forecast area (PHD-ZZV.) There could be a
rumble of thunder along this line, though instability is
limited.

Strong pressure rises behind the front, strong winds aloft, and
mixing with rapidly steepening lapse rates in cold advection
should result in wind gusts to 50 mph across much of the region
continuing late tonight through Monday. Areas across the higher
terrain of Tucker county WV could see gusts around 65 mph, where
the High Wind Watch remains in effect in coordination with
surrounding NWS offices. These gusts should continue into
Monday night before diminishing somewhat. Wind should remain
elevated across eastern Tucker county into Tuesday.

In addition to the wind, a sharp drop in temperature is expected
through the day Monday. After the initial band of rain showers
moves east of the area, a brief lull in precipitation is
expected. The parent upper trough is then expected to cross the
region during the afternoon and evening, as moisture wraps
around the surface low. Snow showers are expected to increase
through the afternoon, and continue Monday night. Some banding
to this snow is possible, which could create hazardous travel
conditions combined with the wind and sharp temperature drop.
The boundary layer flow is also expected to veer from SW to the
WNW, providing some connection off of the Great Lakes,
especially for areas along and north of the I-80 corridor. The
ridges should also see a period of upslope snow, though the wind
direction is less than optimal for the most efficient rates.

The snow showers should gradually taper off Tuesday as the
trough axis shifts east of the area, and the boundary layer flow
backs to the SW. Another shortwave in NW flow aloft is progged
to approach and cross the region Tuesday night, with another
increase in snow shower activity expected.

Winter weather headlines may be needed, mainly for the I-80
corridor and north, and will monitor this potential in future
forecasts.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
KEY MESSAGES:

Model ensembles indicate a longwave trough will persist across
the Eastern CONUS through the period. Shortwaves rotating around
the trough will maintain periodic snow chances and cold
temperatures through Friday. A reinforcing cold front is
currently expected to drop south across the region late
Wednesday into Thursday morning, resulting in enhanced snow
chances, with subsequent lake enhancement possible.

The trough is progged to become less amplified by Saturday, with
at least some moderation in temperature. Rain or snow is still
possible Saturday with the continued shortwave crossings through
the main trough.

A jumble of LIFR/MVFR/VFR exists across the region to open the
TAF period. LIFR is most common across the lowlands with the
presence of low stratus/fog (freezing at DUJ). Slight downslope
effects have kept more dry air in at LBE/MGW through the
overnight hours allowing for VFR conditions. The warm front is
quickly advancing into the region at this time, bringing

Additional spotty rain is possible between 21Z today and 00Z
Monday. However, the majority of precipitation will likely track
north with the warm front.

Between 04Z to 08Z Monday, a cold front will likely be tracking
into eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. High resolution
models depict a line of gusty showers along the cold front that
could briefly reduce visibility. However, the main impact will
be wind gusts between 30-45kts behind the cold front.

A brief lull in precipitation is expected early Monday morning
in the wake of the cold front, before a shortwave trough over
the Great Lakes drops into the region. Snow showers are expected
to develop, at times reducing visibility and cigs after 15Z
Monday.

Outlook... Restrictions to continue Monday with occasional snow
through Wednesday under upper troughing and cold W-NW flow.
