.SYNOPSIS...
There will be a break from the snow today, but snow will
redevelop this evening into Sunday. Snow accumulations look to be
more significant and widespread. Another good chance of
widespread snow and rain is expected Wednesday. Temperatures this
weekend into next week won't be as cold with highs warming into
the 30s.

.DISCUSSION...

Saturday through Monday afternoon: Lingering snow impacting Lookout
Pass in the Central Panhandle Mountains will last for another couple
hours before ending. As the last of this snow falls and the
shortwave trough exits the area, overcast skies will form ahead of
the system projected to begin impacting the forecast area this
afternoon. In a change from this previous trough, this wave will be
stronger, warmer, and wetter, with higher midlevel moisture and more
lift. The Cascades will start being impacted this afternoon, and the
lowlands and Central Panhandle Mountains will begin being impacted
later this evening. Snow totals with this system have steadily been
increasing as the event grows nearer. Lowland areas including the
Spokane/Coeur d'Alene metro areas have a 50 percent or higher chance
of seeing two inches of snow or more, with expected snow totals near
4-5 inches in total through this event, which will overall last
through Monday afternoon. The Cascades, Central Panhandle Mountains,
and Northeast Blue Mountains all have a 50 percent chance or more of
seeing 6 inches at the highest elevations, with expected snow totals
of a foot or more in higher elevations.

The first half of this system, through Sunday afternoon, snow levels
will be very low. As warm air advection associated with the front
moves in at that time from the southwest, snow levels in the
southeastern portions of the lowlands will rise and areas such as
Lewiston and Pullman will see a transition from rain to snow. The
boundary layer begins to dry out in the Okanogan Valley and Upper
Columbia Basin by Saturday afternoon, which will keep snow totals
for those areas low throughout the event. While the boundary will
have moved out of the area by Sunday afternoon, residual moisture
and lift from the storm will allow mountains to continue seeing snow
due to orographic lift, increasing storm snow totals. Due to the
higher snow totals associated with this storm, winter storm warning
headlines will be required for the mountain areas and winter weather
advisory headlines will be needed for eastern lowland areas
including Spokane and Coeur d'Alene. /AS

Monday night through Saturday: Surface high across the Canadian
Rockies will push south onto the Plains. We will see some of that
cold air seepage into portions of the ID Panhandle and northern WA
Monday night/Tuesday morning, and more so for Wednesday morning.

Light snow will continue Monday night and Tuesday for portions of
the ID Panhandle, eastern WA and the Cascade crest. Amounts would
be light.

Wednesday the next weather disturbance moves into the region. Snow
levels will be low enough that most of the precip will fall as
snow across the region. The exception to that will be across the
LC Valley, parts of the Columbia Basin, and perhaps along parts of
Highway 97 from Wenatchee to the Canadian border where rain or
rain/snow mix is possible. Snow amounts look light, generally 1
to 2 inches for the valleys. Probabilities of over an inch are
30-50% for the valley locations of eastern WA and the ID Panhandle
stretching from the Palouse up to the border. As you head into
central WA the probabilities go down to 20% or less.

Thursday light snow remains in the forecast especially for the
eastern third of WA, the ID Panhandle and Cascade crest. Some of
the deterministic models are showing a low dropping down over our
region, and this will need to be watched as that could provide
some heavier snow amounts.

Temperatures look to be the coldest Wednesday with that cold air
seepage into our region. Thereafter the temperatures begin to
moderate with some daytime temps above freezing. Thursday
temperatures could be colder than what is forecast if that low
drops down. But otherwise have higher confidence that by Friday
and next weekend temperatures will get into the mid 30s to low 40s
for daytime temps. Through Saturday morning it looks like our low
temps will still get to below freezing at night. By Sunday
morning, that could change, so stay tuned.

Precipitation chances continues for Friday and Saturday. With the
warmer temperatures in the forecast that will mean rain or
rain/snow mix. Will need to keep an eye on flooding potentials
(low lying areas, fields, and some creeks, streams or rivers),
especially for parts of the Palouse where they have several inches
of snow on the ground, and then having temps above freezing and a
rain event could lead to quick snow melt of the low elevation

12Z TAFS: Currently, all TAF sites at the moment except for KPUW
are at VFR/MVFR ceilings. As the next system arrives around 22Z
today through 00Z tomorrow, snow will begin to impact each TAF
site. While timing on snow differs, snow will continue for each
site through the forecast period. For central Washington, snow
will begin around 22Z, and for eastern Washington, snow will begin
around 01/02Z. There is the potential for fog/freezing fog to
form this morning, but confidence in that is low and not reflected
in the TAFs. Skies are expected to be mostly overcast through the
forecast period.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE AND/OR ALTERNATE SCENARIOS: There is moderate
to high confidence for LIFR/IFR conditions continuing through
18-22Z for KGEG, KPUW, KSFF, and KCOE. There is low confidence in
the formation of fog/freezing fog for some areas such as KMWH.
Confidence in timing of the start of snow is moderate. /AS
