.SYNOPSIS...
Light snow will spread across southeast Washington and the Idaho
Panhandle tonight producing light accumulations across the
Palouse, Camas Prairie and the central Idaho Panhandle. Light snow
will also occur across the east slopes of the Cascades. Another
round of potentially more significant snow is expected Tuesday
night into Wednesday across eastern Washington and north Idaho.
Temperatures will remain below average through next weekend.

.UPDATE...Quick update this evening to increase chance of snow
across the east slopes of the Cascades onto the Waterville Plateau
as well as across southeast WA and parts of the central ID
Panhandle. Upslope flow will enhance snow across the east slopes.
Several cameras are showing snow and this will continue through
the night. Accumulations will generally be 1 to 2 inches, but
some locations could see up to 3 inches. Have also increased winds
down the Okanogan valley through the evening given current
conditions, and lowered min temperatures a couple more degrees for
this area as well since they are already at their forecasted min
temp. The winds will decreased through the night, though remain
elevated at about 10-15 mph. /Nisbet

.DISCUSSION...

What do you get when highs are in the 80s over Arizona and
temperatures are below zero across Alberta and the plains of
Montana? A temperature difference of about 100F degrees, and a
strong Polar Jet between 2 very different air masses. Through
Friday, Pacific disturbances within that fast flow will bring
chances for snow to Oregon, Idaho, and parts of Washington. Winter
Weather Advisories have been issued for tonight through Wednesday
morning for the Camas Prairie in the southern ID Panhandle, the
mountainous terrain of the Central Idaho Panhandle, and for the
Blue Mountains in southeast WA.

Tonight and Tuesday: Our first disturbance will have a rich tap of
Pacific moisture and track through Oregon into central Idaho
tonight. As it does bands of snow will develop as far north as
Ritzville, Spokane and Sandpoint. With cold air in place snow
ratios are expected to be as high as 15:1 yielding accumulations
of 1 to 3 inches over an 18 to 24 hour period for the Palouse,
Camas Prairie and central Idaho Panhandle. The National Blend of
Models (NBM) gives Spokane and Coeur d'Alene a 30 percent chance
of an inch of accumulation by Tuesday afternoon and a 70 percent
chance for Pullman and Pomeroy. Lewiston has a 50 percent chance
of its first measurable snow of the season tonight, but with
marginal temperatures the chance of over an inch is only 30
percent. The influx of moisture and a less aggressive push of cold
air through north Idaho tonight has led to a forecast that is not
as cold for tonight and tomorrow with lows in the teens and 20s
and highs in the mid 20s to low 30s.

Tuesday night and Wednesday: Confidence is increasing for a more
significant round of snow with disturbance number 2 Tuesday night
into Wednesday. Additional Winter Weather Advisories will likely
be necessary across the WA/ID Palouse, L-C Valley and possibly the
Spokane/CDA metro and north Idaho Panhandle. The northward extent
of measurable snow remains in question, but the Camas Prairie,
Blue Mountains, and the southern and central parts of Shoshone
county have the best shot of snow amounts of 4 inches or more
(about 60 percent per the NBM). Advisory amounts of snow are
generally about 2 inches over 12 hours and there is a 40 percent
chance of 2 inches for Spokane and Coeur d'Alene Tuesday night
into Wednesday morning and around 70 percent for Pullman, Moscow,
St Maries, and Kellogg. Wednesday morning lows are trending not as
cold with no sub-zero temperatures advertised by the NBM (Methow
Valley could be the exception). Readings will still be well below
average Wednesday morning with single digits along the Canadian
border and teens for the metro, Columbia Basin, Central WA and the

Thursday through Sunday: Below average temperatures and intermittent
snow showers will continue through the second half of the week and
into the weekend as we remain under the influence of a cold upper
level trough. The northern third of WA and the ID panhandle north of
Sandpoint will experience particularly cold mornings with dry arctic
air seeping in from Canada, allowing temperatures to drop into the
single digits and even below zero for some locations.

Chances for temperatures less than 0F Thursday morning are as follows:

Curlew, WA: 35%
Republic, WA: 30%
Colville, WA: 30%
Metaline Falls, WA: 25%
Deer Park, WA: 20%

While Thursday morning looks to be the coldest morning in the
extended forecast period, temperatures in the Methow Valley (i.e.,
Winthrop, Twisp, Methow, and Mazama) will likely drop near or below
for several nights during the period so long as skies remain clear.

For the rest of the region further south including Wenatchee,
Spokane, Pullman, Moses Lake, and Lewiston, lows will range from the
low teens to low 20s and highs will be in the upper 20s to low
30s.

.AVIATION...
06z TAFS: GEG/SFF/COE/PUW/LWS/EAT will experience periods of
light snow tonight into the early Tuesday morning. Runway
accumulation of 1 to 2 inches is likely at Pullman while
marginally warm temperatures may limit accumulations at Lewiston.
GEG/SFF/COE have a 50% chance of seeing an inch of snow through
Tues morning, and EAT has a 40% chance of seeing a half an inch of
snow. Another band of snow will move into the region from the
south and toward LWS/PUW aft 23Z and will move toward GEG/SFF/COE
by 02Z. Cigs are expected to remain MVFR with localized IFR in
brief heavier snow. Vis will waffle btwn IFR and MVFR. Northerly
winds will be strongest through the period down the Purcell
Trench, Okanogan Valley and into parts of the Columbia Basin,
including COE and MWH. Speeds 12-22kts with gusts up to 32kts.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE AND/OR ALTERNATE SCENARIOS: Snow has moved
further north like models were catching on to the last 2 models
runs. High confidence that light snow will continue through the
night.
