.KEY MESSAGES...

- Warm, very dry, and breezy conditions will lead to extreme
  fire danger through this afternoon. Similar conditions are
  expected again Tuesday afternoon in southeast Nebraska and a
  Red Flag Warning is in effect.

- Late Tuesday into Wednesday, a powerful storm system will
  bring thunderstorms, several hours of winds gusting 50 to 65
  mph, and rain changing to heavy snow with periods of blizzard
  conditions and significant travel impacts. A Winter Storm
  Watch remains in effect for areas most likely to experience
  blizzard conditions.

- Along with blizzard conditions, the strong winds could lead to damage
  to trees and power lines. A High Wind Watch has been issued
  for the entire area Wednesday.

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 430 PM CDT Mon Mar 17 2025

Warm, dry, and breezy conditions early this afternoon were leading
to very high to extreme fire danger across the area, with a handful
of fires having been spotted via satellite so far. 25-35 mph gusts
will continue this afternoon, but should taper off pretty quickly
toward 6-7 PM.

For Tuesday, a quasi-stationary front will set up from central IA
toward the NE/KS border. To the south of the front southerly flow
will allow temperatures to climb into the 70s to lower 80s once
again with RH falling into the teens to mid 20s. Winds don't look
quite as strong as today, but still seeing 25-30 kts at the top of
the mixed layer in various model soundings down there. With the
tendency to overachieve on mixing as of late, elected to issue a Red
Flag Warning for southeast NE near the NE/KS border. Meanwhile to
the north of the boundary, expect northerly winds with high
temperatures in the 60s.

Attention then turns to the potential blizzard on tap for Tuesday
night into Wednesday. Latest water vapor imagery showed the system
that will be responsible for our snow just moving onshore over
northern CA as of 3 PM. This trough will continue to push east with
a surface low spinning up over northeast CO by mid to late Tuesday
morning. The low will track eastward into Tuesday night, most likely
just south of the NE/KS border before heading northeast and into the
Great Lakes by Thursday morning. Low level moisture transport ahead
of the low will ramp up late Tuesday evening, pointing into the
aforementioned quasi-stationary front across the area. While
instability looks fairly meager (a few hundred J/kg of MUCAPE), it
should be enough for some thunderstorm development around midnight
and with strong vertical shear, we could see just enough
organization for a strong to isolated severe storm or two. The main
threat would be hail, but can't completely rule out some damaging
wind gusts.

Meanwhile the deformation band of precipitation on the back side of
the low will be pushing in from the northwest with 50-65 mph wind
gusts not far behind. These winds will also be bringing in colder
air and an eventual change from rain to snow. Since we will be
starting so warm it could take a while, but very strong forcing will
lead to heavier precip and potentially an earlier changeover than
models are currently showing. Once this changeover does occur, the
heavy snow combined with the aforementioned winds will lead to
blizzard conditions and likely significant travel impacts. Still
some questions on exactly where the heaviest band of snow will end
up falling with the current forecast showing a decent swath of 4-7"
mainly north of I-80. However, as we saw with the blizzard 2 weeks
ago, with these winds, it doesn't take that much snow to lead to
whiteout conditions. Plus, with those winds it will be very
difficult to measure snowfall anyway. The biggest question with this
system seems to be the southern cutoff of impactful snow with the
aforementioned warm air in place along with a decent punch of dry
air at around 700 mb possibly leading to some lulls in
precipitation. Some guidance (e.g. 17.12Z GFS) is much farther north
with said dry air, leading to that snowfall cutoff being right along
I-80 between Lincoln and Omaha. In contrast, other guidance (e.g.
17.12Z ECMWF) would suggest the heaviest band could set up right in
that same corridor. Given the uncertainty in band placement, decided
to keep the Winter Storm Watch for blizzard conditions in place, but
again, even lower snowfall amounts will probably lead to blizzard
conditions and necessitate an eventual Blizzard Warning. At this
time, highest potential for that looks to be within a county or 2 of
a line from Onawa to David City. Finally, in addition to the Winter
Storm Watch, issued a High Wind Watch for the entire area from 4 AM
through 7 PM Wednesday. With 50-65 mph gusts expected, in addition
to the whiteout conditions we could see damage to trees and
powerlines, along with difficult travel for lightweight and high
profile vehicles outside of where the snow falls.

Snow should exit by around 7 PM Wednesday and while we'll be cooler,
temperatures still look like they could still climb into the 50s for
many areas Thursday, so the snow that does fall should melt rather
quickly as the mild weather sticks around into next week. Additional
precip chances (15-25%) arrive on Friday as a weak shortwave trough
slides through, but that should all be rain if we get anything.
Another stronger system looks like it could clip the area Sunday
(40% chance), but most ensemble members give us only light rain and
keep the vast majority of that precip to our east. Still lots of
time to sort things out before then.

Northeasterly winds increase to 12-14 knots at KOFK by 09z,
with a few gusts up to 21 knots through the afternoon, but
increase to 24-34 knots toward the end of the TAF with scattered

KOFK by 19/08-12z, beyond this TAF period. For KLNK/KOMA, winds
