Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Missoula MT 242 AM MST Thu Feb 6 2025 .DISCUSSION... KEY MESSAGES: - Snow showers will continue early this morning over west central and northwest Montana. - Another round of snow is on the way for central Idaho, Lemhi County, and portions of western Montana on Friday. - In the long term, an active, snowy weather pattern remains over the region through next week. A circulation of low pressure off the coast of northern California is sending Pacific moisture into the Northern Rockies early this morning. Snow will continue across central Idaho and western Montana, tapering off after sunrise. The Northern Rockies will experience a short break in winter weather this afternoon before the next system arrives on Friday. The Pacific low will move onshore and into the Northern Rockies by Friday morning. Model ensemble members are coming into agreement for the midlevel low to track through north-central Idaho then west-central Montana, Lemhi County, and southwest Montana. The trajectory of this circulation will focus the precipitation to the aforementioned areas. Snow will begin in southern Idaho County late Thursday night to early Friday morning and migrate east. As the low moves into southwest Montana on Friday afternoon, easterly flow north of the low pressure center will result in enhanced snowfall over southwest Montana and along the Continental Divide in Powell and southeastern Flathead counties. Gusty north winds will accompany snow in Lemhi County on Friday afternoon as a surface low sets up to the south of the midlevel circulation. Expect unsettled weather to continue through the weekend as a series of disturbances move through the Northern Rockies. In the long term, the region remains under a broad region of troughing, so snow showers will be a common occurrence through at least next week. && .AVIATION...Light snow this morning will continue through about 06/1400Z at KGPI, KMSO and KHRF. Decreases in visibility and ceiling are accompanying snow showers. Snow showers taper off after about sunrise, with about a 30 percent chance of an additional shower before 06/1800Z.
