Regional radar imagery shows some very light returns moving north
out of AL/GA this morning, on the eastern periphery of a
weak upper low that is moving ESE through northern Mississippi
this morning. This upper low will increasingly take on a
southeastward trajectory through the day, causing that band of
light returns to pivot around it and move northward to roughly the
I-40 corridor. The last few runs of the HRRR show little to no
shower activity through the day across our forecast area, and I
can't say that I totally disagree. However, other guidance is
insisting on there being some showers, with possibly some
thunderstorms mixed in, developing along that axis. Made some
minor adjustments to PoPs today, but essentially kept them
limited to slight chances as the previous shift did. Biggest
change was to delay any mentionable rain chances for a few hours.

Otherwise, no changes to the going forecast.

evening.

Discussion:

An upper level short wave to our west will track across our area
today.  This weakly forced system will have little moisture to work
with, so at best some mainly isolated showers can be expected around
the area today into the early evening. Model soundings and the HREF
show some limited convective energy, but suspect the models overall
are too aggressive in moistening the lower levels and am skeptical
of much thunder. However, a rumble or two of thunder cannot be ruled
out especially southern valley/Plateau/western edge of SW VA, so
will keep slight chance for thunder there.

Dew points will be higher today than yesterday although RH values
will still dip into the 30s across much of the area this afternoon
and a few spots mainly northeast may see values in the high 20s. It
will be very warm again today, but given that the RH values will be
higher than yesterday and winds will be lighter, no fire danger SPS
is planned for now. However, will highlight the low RH values in the
FWF.

The short wave will exit to the east and ridging will build over the
area tonight.  Once any lingering isolated showers end this evening,
tonight will be dry with above normal temperatures.

(Friday through Wednesday)

Key Messages:

1. A very strong and dynamic system will impact the region Friday
night through early Saturday morning with a high-end, long-duration
mountain wave event likely across the mountains and foothills.

2. A significant severe weather outbreak is likely across the region
with the greatest threat in our area being along the Cumberland
Plateau and southeast Tennessee. The greatest threat is for
significant and widespread damaging winds with tornadoes and large
hail also possible.

3. Multiple rounds of storms and abundant moisture will lead to
potential flash flooding Saturday evening through early Sunday
morning, especially west of Interstate 75.

4. Drier and cooler conditions arrive Sunday night into Monday,
followed by a warming trend and another system by Wednesday.

Discussion:

At the start of the period, development of the impactful system will
be underway across the central United States. This begins as a deep,
negatively tilted trough ejects out of the Rockies with the rapidly
deepening surface low progressing over Nebraska/Kansas and then into
the Upper Mississippi River Valley. The latest model guidance
suggests a central pressure near 975mb, a record-breaking March
value for many locations in the region. This system is expected to
bring widespread impacts across much of the eastern U.S., including
a dangerous, large-scale severe weather outbreak. The following
sections are grouped based on order of occurrence and with respect
to our area:

1. Mountain Waves/Fire Weather

Ahead of this system, height rises and a broad southerly 850mb jet
will make for unseasonably warm temperatures and deep mixing on
Friday. Additionally, an increasingly strong MSLP gradient will be
in place across the region, especially along the mountains. During
the day on Friday, values of 40 to 50 kts are indicated to our west
with an increase to over 60 kts by Friday night. A slight decrease
in these winds is likely on Saturday before a significant increase
to 70 kts or greater ahead of eventual convection. Based on these
trends, a significant and long-duration mountain wave event is in
store. Aside from the mountain winds, breezy conditions can be
expected area-wide due to the MSLP gradient alone, which approaches
1mb per 30 to 40 miles. Overall, rain potential is limited today
with virtually 0 rain chances until Saturday morning. Based on
extent of winds and dry conditions seen in recent days, fire weather
is of significant concern, especially in the mountains. With respect
to the previously issued High Wind Watch, everything remains the
same.

2. Severe Weather

The original surface low is expected to track into Canada with
another area of low pressure developing west of the Mississippi
River Valley. During this time, focus will also turn towards
impressive upper divergence due to a coupled jet structure Saturday
afternoon. At the time of this update, the latest HREF data ends
Friday evening with the FV3 and high-res NAM only reaching until 12Z
Saturday. There are indications of decaying convection moving into
the area Saturday morning but likely with only elevated instability.
The main focus will be anytime from Saturday afternoon through
Saturday night. The timing and some details will still need to be
resolved with higher resolution model data, but the latest
indications raise significant concerns for what will unfold. Very
curved hodographs and MLCAPE over 500 J/kg are indicated during the
day on Saturday with effective shear of well above 50 kts and low-
level SRH of 300 to 500 m2/s2. The latest models indicate convection
to be in the area Saturday afternoon, which would likely be in the
form of robust supercells. This is noted even more notably to our
south and west with this convection likely forming into a line and
moving towards the area by the evening hours. With the environment
being indicated from the NAM and other models, a severe weather
outbreak with all hazards is likely in store across the region.
There are still questions as to how the local environment will
evolve in our area, in addition to the initiation, evolution, and
coverage of convection. These details will be better resolved once
more high-res model guidance is available through the event. Ahead
of this potential line, most sources increase 850mb winds to in
excess of 70 kts, which would present a significant damaging wind
risk if these winds are brought to the surface.

3. Flooding

Ahead of the approaching cold front, very strong 850mb moisture
transport moves into our area with PWATs reaching to near record
high values of 1.4 to 1.5 inches. With this environment and the
likelihood of multiple rounds of convection, there is a notable
threat for flash flooding. This would be most true for places west
of Interstate 75 away from the influence of downsloping.

Sunday through Wednesday

By Sunday morning, there is a pretty good consensus for the frontal
boundary associated with this system to be largely east of the area.
The same trend is also shown regarding the available moisture. Some
lingering instability may support isolated thunder chances in the
east, but west to east decreasing shower activity is the main
expectation. CAA and expansion of high pressure will promote cooler
and drier conditions Sunday night into Monday. Towards Tuesday,
temperatures will quickly recover due to height rises and southerly
flow with high pressure shifting off to the east. By Wednesday,
another system is expected to develop and track to our north. Its
approaching frontal boundary will bring another chance of rain. At
this time, vertical ascent and instability may be sufficient for
additional convection. This system will be something to watch, but
the current data suggests nothing to the level of what's expected
this weekend.

Winds will be light through the 14-16z Friday timeframe, after
which point the potential for gusts into the mid/upper teens

terminals so will leave all sites dry.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of southwest North
Carolina...east Tennessee and southwest Virginia.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

The probability for widespread hazardous weather is low.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday

High winds are expected across the mountains late Friday through
Saturday night. This will also raise concerns for the spread of
any ongoing wildfires in the region. See the High Wind Watch for
more details.

A severe weather outbreak is expected across portions of the
eastern United States Saturday into Saturday night with the
greatest threat in our area being along the Cumberland Plateau to
southeast Tennessee. Damaging winds are the greatest threat with
potential for them to be significant and widespread. There is also
a threat for tornadoes and large hail. Some details regarding the
severe weather threat remain uncertain, so stay tuned to the
forecast for updates.

Also, with multiple rounds of storms, there is a threat for flash
flooding by Saturday evening, especially west of Interstate 75.
