Discussion:

Cold and dry this forecast period with northerly winds bringing
CAA behind a cold front. Breezy winds this afternoon for valley
locations, with gusts from 15 to 25 mph out of the northwest.
Breezy winds across the east TN, southwest VA, and southwest NC
mountains from 25 to 35 mph. Breezy conditions will subside
around sunset. In the upper levels, nearly zonal flow will be
present tonight and tomorrow. At the surface, high pressure will
be centered over the Ohio Valley. Colder temps and dew points are
moving in this afternoon with northwesterly flow behind the cold
front. Lows in the Tennessee Valley will get down into the 20s
tonight. Highs tomorrow will be near 50 in the Valley which is a
few degrees below normal.

Key Messages:

1. A dynamic system will impact the region Saturday into Saturday
night. A mountain wave event, possibly high-end, is likely with a
High Wind Watch now in effect. There is also a significant risk for
river and flash flooding, especially along the Cumberland Plateau
and into southwest Virginia where a Flood Watch has been issued.

2. A low-end threat for severe storms exists late Saturday night
into very early Sunday morning along the Cumberland Plateau and
central and southern Valley. Damaging winds are the main concern,
but a low-end tornado risk exists in the far southern areas.

3. Much colder air arrives on Sunday with light snow showers across
the higher elevations.

4. Seasonally cold temperatures remain in place next week with
increasing potential in another system developing that has potential
to bring snowfall to a significant portion of the area.

Discussion:

At the start of the period, a trough will be ejecting out of the
Rockies with a developing low pressure system moving into
Oklahoma/Kansas. High pressure will be centered along the Atlantic
Coast, creating a wedge of colder air on the eastern side of the
mountains. Based on the latest model data, the consensus is for this
system to track towards the Ohio River Valley into Saturday. Aloft,
a strong upper jet in excess of 140 kts will also move into the
western Great Lakes region. With the wedge of high pressure to the
east and the system approaching from the west, a strong MSLP
gradient will be in place across the mountains. This system will be
very dynamic with all model guidance suggesting a southerly 850mb
jet exceeding 60 kts from Saturday morning through Saturday night.
The latest NAM guidance is even more aggressive, showing near record
high values in excess of 70 kts just to our north and east. As such,
High Wind Warning criteria is very likely to be met with a higher
end event increasingly possible. Confidence was high enough for a
High Wind Watch to be issued.

The other threats with this system will be flooding and strong to
severe storms. Based on the latest model guidance, the northern
periphery of the area will be where chances are greatest to see pre-
frontal rain before the main line moves in ahead of the associated
frontal boundary. Additionally, these areas will be further away
from downsloping effects caused by the mountain high winds. As of
early this afternoon, most places have seen 2 to 3 inches of rain
this week with some places in southeast Tennessee reporting over 4
inches. This will further exacerbate the threat for both river and
convective flooding when this system arrives as several river flood
warnings are already in effect. Based on these indications, a Flood
Watch was issued for places that are currently expected to see the
heavier rainfall. The watch may be expanded when high-res data can
increase confidence in forecast rainfall totals.

As far as the severe threat, the main question continues to be how
far the warm front reaches ahead of a forecast line of convection.
At this time, model guidance suggests the warm front making it to
the southern row of counties, possibly further north. Any tornado
threat would need to be within this warm sector as very impressive 0
to 1km shear of 40 kts or higher is indicated. But aside from the
tornado threat, any transfer of these very high 850mb winds to the
surface would easily produce damaging winds. With how saturated the
ground will be, subsevere winds could easily bring down trees and
powerlines. It should be noted that both the wedge of colder air to
the east and the likely timing after midnight will be working
against this system. But with how dynamic the system is, any small
amount of instability would definitely raise concerns.

By the day on Sunday, the pattern will trend much colder as the
frontal boundary associated with this system will have pushed off to
our east. 850mb will be initially more westerly and become more
northwesterly later in the day. Values of 25 to 30 kts and lingering
moisture near and below 850mb will be sufficient for orographic lift
and snowfall potential along the higher terrain. By Sunday night
into Monday, high pressure will gradually drift towards the area
from the north, leading to drier and cold conditions.

For the middle to end of the week, seasonally cold conditions will
remain in place due to the high pressure to our north. Sometime
around Tuesday night into Wednesday, a system is likely to develop
to our south and progress northeastward towards the Atlantic Coast.
A lot still remain unclear about the evolution and track of this
system, but several solutions suggest a scenario that could bring a
return of wintry weather to a significant portion of the region.
This system will be something to watch beyond the impactful weekend
weather.

MVFR cigs at TRI and TYS will be variable through the night, as
satellite shows the back edge of cloud cover just west of the
terminals, with a decreasing trend to clouds. Both sites should be
predominantly VFR by 12Z, and remain so through the day. Midlevel
clouds will increase in the late afternoon as the next system
approaches. Showers and LLWS may arrive at all sites just after
the end of this TAF period.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday

A wet pattern with another round of moderate to heavy rain this
weekend. Flooding issues will becoming increasingly likely.
Another 1.5 to 3 inches is expected Saturday into Sunday across
the majority of the area.

The potential exists for a significant flooding event through the
weekend. Stream and river flooding, flooded roads, as well as mud
and rock slides are all possible. Please stay tuned to the latest
forecast as rainfall amounts will continue to be adjusted through
the week. Additionally, another round of strong winds are possible
across the East Tennessee, southwest Virginia, and southwest North
Carolina mountains Saturday and Saturday night. Mountain wave high
winds are likely across the Tennessee mountains and adjacent
foothills. This could cause more downed trees and power outages
due to saturated grounds. Finally, the southern part of East
Tennessee are highlighted in a severe weather risk for severe
thunderstorms Saturday night.
