.SHORT TERM /THROUGH THIS AFTERNOON/...
Issued at 323 AM EST Fri Jan 31 2025

Water vapor imagery and RAP analysis show weak, sheared shortwave
tracking from southern Manitoba across northern Ontario. This wave
is helping to push a sfc cold front s across the area early this
morning. As of 07z, front runs across western Lake Superior to near
Ontonagon then e to around Marquette and to around Newberry. Post
frontal n winds have led to stratus developing across portions of
northern Upper MI. Temps at 08z range from generally the teens F
across the s to the 20s F n. Cold spot is Peavy Falls at 7F and warm
spot is 32F at Copper Harbor, closely followed by 30F at Menominee.

Cold front will quickly move to the s of Upper MI over the next
several hrs. Rather vigorous CAA today in its wake will lower 850mb
temps from current readings of around 0C over s central Upper MI and
-10C over northern Lake Superior to -10C over s central Upper MI to
-15 to -18C across Lake Superior by sunset, allowing LES to develop
today, particularly for the aftn when the DGZ falls blo the
inversion. Speaking of which, the inversion will be low. Over the w,
inversion falls from around 5kft to 3-4kft. Over eastern Lake
Superior, inversion will be around 5kft. Roughly 45 degrees of
directional shear is noted from cloud base to around cloud top which
will be an impediment to organization. So, while the DGZ falling
into the convective layer will raise SLRs/fluff up the snow, the low
inversions and directional shear will keep snow accumulations on the
light side. Expect snow accumulations of an inch or less today,
except in the high terrain of Baraga/Marquette counties where
upsloping will provide a boost for 1-2 inches. Expect highs in the
mid 20s to lwr 30s F, warmest s central. However, temps will slowly
fall in the aftn under continued caa, and readings will be down to
the mid/upper teens Keweenaw to n central by sunset.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...

The overall synopsis in the extended starts off with a closed, upper
level low over the middle-Mississippi River Valley to our south and
a shortwave pressing into Lake Superior. These two features will
shift eastward Friday before pressing into the Atlantic Saturday.
Behind these features, mid-level ridging will extend across central
Canada southward into the middle-Mississippi River Valley with
surface ridging pressing east through Ontario. Further west, a weak
shortwave looks to eject from the Rockies of Colorado/Wyoming while
another shifts eastward further to the north by Saturday evening.
This, while deep troughing establishes itself over the Pacific
Northwest. The shortwaves will force the ridging downstream through
the Upper Great Lakes Saturday followed by the initial shortwave
tracking through Upper Michigan Saturday night and Sunday. For the
second shortwave, guidance has begun gravitating toward a surface
low developing further south over Wyoming/Montana/western Dakotas
late Saturday/early Sunday, which could help to reinforce Sunday for
our forecast area. Overall though, there's still consistency in the
amplifying shortwave resulting in a better defined surface low north
of Lake Superior Sunday night. As this low shifts eastward Monday,
lingering surface troughing over the region under zonal flow aloft
will likely support lake effect snow into Monday/Tuesday until high
pressure and dry air diminish activity.

Friday into Saturday morning, the combination of the low transiting
to the south, lingering surface troughing, and increasing colder air
aloft will support lake effect snow showers developing and pressing
into the western northeast lake effect snow belts. By afternoon,
this potential should shift east as winds become more northerly.
Showers may see some topographic enhancement across the north-
central and parts of the Keweenaw, which may result in an inch or
two of fluffy snow.

Focus then shifts on to the late Saturday into Sunday night period
when a series of shortwaves press through the Great Lakes region.
While the evolution of the event is a little less certain, the key
points continue to be widespread, isentropically forced, wetter snow
pushing through the forecast area Saturday night into Sunday along
and ahead of a warm front and then a cold front shifting through the
forecast area Sunday night. The details in the past 24 hours have
changed some though, and the ceiling of total potential snowfall
amounts have trended up due to the possibility of a stronger surface
low developing upstream, which results in more mid-level convergence
along a cold front late Sunday. US deterministic medium range models
highlight this potential, while their European counterpart maintains
clear dry slotting between the two frontal features in our forecast
area. It should be noted that the US and Canadian model sets have
both trended toward the dry slot idea in the 12z guidance by
afternoon/evening Sunday as well, but the GFS/NAM continue to be
outliers for QPF along the cold frontal boundary. There is also a
clearer upslope flow signal into the south-central and lake
enhancement signal off of Lake Michigan initially Saturday night
into Delta/Menominee/Schoolcraft, although the latter may be
overdone some due to ice on the Bay of Green Bay. Lastly, there has
been a slight cooling trend to low/mid-level air in the last 24
hours, which suggests ptype may end up being all snow. This is seen
in wetbulb zero heights at or below the surface except near the
immediate lakeshores along the Bay of Green Bay/Lake Michigan Sunday
afternoon. As for snowfall totals, GEFS, GEPS, and EC ensemble
systems have also trended up with snowfall probabilities, but all
differ in coverage, timing, and location. An objective look at the
commonalities suggest the Michigamme Highlands, Keweenaw, and near
the Lake Michigan lakeshores would be most likely to exceed 3 inches
in the event. They all suggest very low chances (<10%) of exceeding
6 inches, although these are likely underdone in the Keweenaw. With
confidence of at least widespread 3 inches being medium to high (50-
75%) given a mix of all of the above and the increasing wetness of
the snow, snow covered and sloppy road conditions are expected
Sunday morning. Those with travel plans Sunday morning should
continue monitoring the forecast.

Cold front will push through Sunday night. Pressure rises behind the
front, strong cold air advection, and an isallobaric wind
acceleration will make for gusty westerly winds. These strong winds
should continue into Monday when they gradually relax. Model
soundings and EC meteograms suggest potential for 45-50 mph winds in
the Keweenaw. Lake effect behind the front is expected to develop
thanks to lingering surface troughing over the region.

For temperatures in this period, a mild Friday with daytime
temperatures climbing into the upper 20s to low 30s is expected
across the entire forecast area. These cool into widespread 20s
Saturday. Sunday continues to look warm, with widespread 30s being
possible. Beyond this, temps fall back down into the teens and 20s.
Overnight lows follow a similar up and down pattern, rotating
between teens and single digits. Coldest conditions, potentially
near zero will be possible Friday night and maybe overnight
Monday/Tuesday in traditional interior cold locations.

Winds will continue their shift from variable to northerly over the
next few hours, while low level clouds increase with a weak
disturbance. So, VFR conditions will continue into early morning
when flight conditions shift to MVFR. The exception until then will
be possible MVFR/IFR fog under clear skies at CMX over the next few
hours, which is highlighted with a tempo. Confidence is also now
high enough to mention IFR at IWD as well as SAW by mid to late
morning as the aforementioned disturbance phases with a closed upper
low over Missouri. Other impacts include some northerly wind gusts
up to 20 kts at CMX this afternoon.

Relatively light winds ~20 kts or less will remain over the region
this afternoon into Friday, at which point colder air pouring into
the area may support northeasterly winds increasing to near 25-
30kts. These should lighten Friday night back to near 20kts. The
next wave move through the region at that point late Saturday.
Southeast winds to increase to near 30kts across lake by evening,
with some low end gales being possible north and east of Isle
Royale. These lighten Sunday before increasing to 30-40kts from the
west Sunday night into Monday with the passage of a cold front and
strong pressure couplet. The colder airmass building into the area
behind the front, alongside the stronger winds, will make ice
accumulation on vessels from freezing spray possible Monday into
Monday evening.
