...HEAVIEST SNOW SHIFTING SOUTH WITH WINTER STORM...

.The narrow band of heavier snow has shifted south, and the gradient 
has tightened up. As a result, areas across central Minnesota will 
see less snow, so the Blizzard Warning was replaced with a Winter 
Weather Advisory for Le Sueur, Nicollet, Brown, Watonwan, Rice, and 
Goodhue counties.

Areas to the south and east of those counties have a higher chance 
of seeing whiteout conditions from heavy snow and strong wind, so a 
blizzard warning remains in effect for those locations. In Pepin and 
Eau Claire Counties, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect.

As for timing, snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour will develop 
Wednesday morning and last into early Wednesday afternoon. Northwest 
winds of 30 to 40 mph will accompany the snow, with occasional gusts 
near 45 mph along I-90.

12z guidance has continued to show a southward shift of the axis
of heaviest snow/QPF. With the northwestern side of the
gradient becoming more pronounced, even in global models, have
cut back QPF accordingly. Confidence has increased that the
narrow swath of heaviest snow will fall across far southeastern
Minnesota and into central Wisconsin. This shift and increase
in confidence will be reflected in changes to headlines as we
continue to collaborate with neighboring offices.

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 410 AM CDT Tue Mar 18 2025

Today and Tomorrow... A strong low pressure system will move off the
lee of the Rockies in Colorado today and track across the Midwest
into the Great Lakes over the next two days. This will be another
deep low pressure system with a pressure sub-990 mb which puts it in
the lowest percentile in the NAEFS. The warm air advection that
drove yesterday's temperatures will shift the wind aloft with a more
neutral to cold advective direction. This will keep us above average
today, but not as warm as we saw on Monday. It is not until the low
gets closer to us on Wednesday that the cold air advection kicks in
and brings temperatures back closer to normal for March, with
temperatures in the 30s for highs and 20s for lows. This temperature
setup creates a challenging forecast environment for precipitation
types and snow ratios. As even a few degrees of change in the 30 to
35 degree range, which temperatures will largely be in Wednesday
morning, can have big impacts in how much snow occurs with respect
to snow ratios. For precipitation types the colder air advecting in
on the north side of the low takes a while to take out the warm nose
aloft and change over to snow.

As high resolution guidance has come in the start time for rain and
the changeover to snow has moved back. Earlier it looked like a
start time on Tuesday late evening into Tuesday night. Now it looks
more like early Wednesday morning. Based on the track of the low and
where the primary axis of deformation would setup the heaviest snow
is expected in the later part of Wednesday morning across south
central Minnesota into the afternoon across west central Wisconsin.
In addition a sharp cutoff on the northwest edge for the snow is
expected. This edge varies between models, but generally is in the
vicinity of the Twin Cities metro. The more southerly guidance keeps
the heavier snow's edge just south of the metro and the more
northerly takes it up through the core of the metro area. For this
reason we plan to hold on to the part of the Winter Storm Watch in
the metro area. As additional data comes in we will make a
determination on what to do with this watch area. A period of rain
still looks likely before the changeover to snow, but based on the
later start time temperatures will be cooler and there will be less
time when it is rain. Based on the rate of cooling in the different
levels of the atmosphere there could be a brief period of sleet
during the transition from rain to snow. Forecast model soundings
show the warm nose aloft around 800 to 850 mb being slower to erode
than the temperatures below that. This is what opens a window for
some sleet.

The last part to cover with this is the wind. With a strong low
moving across the region, this will drive up the pressure gradient.
This combined with the cold air advection will promote mixing of
these higher winds aloft. Overall wind gusts look to be in the 35 to
45 mph range, with a few gusts closer to 50 mph possible along the I-
90 corridor. This wind combined with falling snow, even if it is wet
snow, will lead to blizzard conditions. However with temperatures on
the warm end of snowfall (closer to freezing) this will limit how
blowable the snow is and require higher winds for blizzard
conditions. According to our blowing snow model, at these
temperatures, either snow rates of 0.75 in/hour or greater or winds
above 40 mph would be needed for blizzard conditions to occur. This
is all most likely in southern Minnesota with lower chances to the
north including the Twin Cities metro and northeast over west
central Wisconsin.

Thursday through Saturday... Cooler, closer to normal, after the low
passes by with highs generally in the 40s. Higher pressure on
Thursday will provide for sunny to mostly sunny skies. A weak wave
aloft could have enough vorticity on Friday for a few rain showers.
Outside of that, a much quieter period.

Sunday and Monday... Our next system moves in the Upper Midwest on
Sunday. Good agreement across the main global deterministic models
in this system moving through the Upper Midwest. Differences in
track though as expected for a day 5 forecast. However these
differences are between us in the warm sector vs the cold sector of
the low. So impacts will vary significantly until this track has
less spread.

With the 12z forecast guidance shifting precip chances south,
have taken rain/snow and IFR mentions out of most terminals.
KMKT, KMSP, and KEAU will find themselves on the edge of any
potential precip tomorrow morning. If a southward trend
continues, I wouldn't be surprised to see KMKT and KMSP with VFR
conditions throughout in future forecasts.

Winds will likely be the bigger story with northerly winds
gusting 25-35kts early tomorrow morning through the end of the
period. Northeast winds will increase by this evening with gusts
to 20-25kts.

KMSP...As mentioned above, the guidance continues to show a
