Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Twin Cities/Chanhassen MN 1218 PM CST Fri Jan 17 2025 .KEY MESSAGES... - Arctic front moves through today, bringing falling temperatures this afternoon and dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills from Saturday evening through Tuesday morning. - Northwest winds gusting to 40-45 mph possible this afternoon and evening from west central through south central MN. - No significant precipitation chances expected over at least the next 7 days. && .DISCUSSION... Issued at 233 AM CST Fri Jan 17 2025 METARS early this morning have been reporting PRESFR, which means pressure falling rapidly. These pressure falls are in response to a trough/front moving east across the Dakotas that's associated with a roughly 984mb low centered near Winnipeg. This pressure trough is also associated with the thermal ridge ahead of the well advertised arctic cold front that has been diving south across the Canadian Prairies early this morning. That front will move into the Alexandria region around noon, clearing Albert Lea and Eau Claire areas around sunset. Strong CAA will kick in behind this arctic front, CAA that does not look to abate until Monday, when h85 temps bottom out near -32C. With that strong CAA, will come the potential for some snow showers, though forecast soundings from the RAP/NAM show a roughly 2-4 hour window where steep lapse rates line up with moisture in the DGZ. However, the moisture looks fairly shallow, which looks to really limit our snow squall potential, with that looking better closer to the international border and surface low. In addition to the snow potential, we'll see gusty northwest winds develop with that CAA, with gusts of 40-45 mph in our typical windy areas from west central through south central MN. We could see some sporadic observations hit wind advisory levels, but confidence in seeing prolonged and widespread wind gusts of 45 mph our higher is not high enough to issue a Wind Advisory. Finally, if we had a typical mid-January snowpack out there, this is a setup that would definitely warrant a Winter Weather Advisory for blowing snow, but we don't have said snow pack, so no winter weather headlines are needed at this time either. As for the cold weather headlines, we start seeing Cold Weather Advisory level apparent temperatures start showing up Saturday evening that continue through Tuesday morning, with potential for hitting Extreme Cold Warning levels Sunday night/Monday morning and again Monday night/Tuesday morning. This will be the coldest airmass we've seen since February of 2021, though the lack of snow cover may result in highs being a few degrees warmer than currently forecast Sunday and Monday if we see full sun on our mostly bare ground both days. We did float the idea of issuing an Extreme Cold Watch from Saturday evening through Tuesday morning, but the consensus from our neighbors was to hold off on issuing any cold weather headlines at this time. By Monday night, we'll see our winds switching over to the west, which will begin the process of pushing the arctic air out of the area. It will still be cold on Tuesday, but by Wednesday, we will start seeing highs back in the 20s, with temperatures back near normal for the second half of next week. For precipitation, chances look minimal given the dry nature of the airmass we'll have, but we are seeing signs of a clipper moving though on Wednesday, which could bring the potential for a couple of rounds of light snow, first with the warm front Tuesday night into Wednesday morning and again Wednesday evening with the cold front. In both cases, accumulations would be very minor. && .AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z SATURDAY/... Issued at 1210 PM CST Fri Jan 17 2025 Gusty northwest winds are beginning to pick up as a strong Arctic front pushes through the region.
