Today and Tonight...
Areas of low clouds and fog (locally dense) early this morning will
give way mostly to partly cloudy skies today. There may be a few
showers develop this afternoon as moisture increases in the
developing moderate to strong southerly flow, but for now PoPs for
today look to be too low to include at this time. A tightening
surface pressure gradient starting today over the region will result
in increasing coastal hazards by this evening, including a High Rip
Current Risk (this evening through Monday afternoon), a High Surf
Advisory for large breaking waves up to 7 feet at the beaches (from
midnight tonight through noon Saturday and then becoming a High Surf
Warning for dangerously large breaking waves of up to 10 feet from
noon Saturday to 6 AM CDT Sunday).
We are still looking at the potential for scattered to possibly
numerous showers and thunderstorms to develop tonight across our
western zones prior to significant event on Saturday. There are
still some uncertainties as to this round of storms tonight. HiRes
guidance is split on whether or not this will occur. For now we will
maintain the high end chance to likely PoPs over our west tonight
(particularly west of the I-65 corridor) but these PoPs could be
overdone. We will probably see at least a few storms, but coverage
and intensity of these storms remains in question. *IF* storms do
develop tonight there could be enough forcing and lift to allow some
to become strong to severe (and possibly an isolated tornado or two
as well). We will continue to monitor the trends with this regard.
High temps today will be about 5-12 degrees above normal, ranging
from around 75 to 82 degrees. Low temps tonight will be warm (on the
order of 15-20 degrees above normal), ranging from around 61 to 67

Saturday and Saturday night...
...A Significant Severe Outbreak Still Likely To Occur On Saturday
Across The Entire Local Region...
Synopsis: A very amplified upper-level trough will push east out of
the Plains States and into the Southeast States through the period.
Out ahead of the trough, a highly diffluent, southwesterly flow
pattern will be in place across the local region. Strong, shortwave
impulses will round the base of the trough and will move within this
flow aloft, providing plenty of deep-layer forcing and lift over the
area. Overall, not seeing a lot of change with regard to
thermodynamics or kinematics from the previous forecast package, so
will not be making any significant changes.
At the surface, a powerful sub-980mb low pressure area likely
located over Iowa/Minnesota at the start of Saturday will occlude
and quickly lift northward into Canada by the end of the day. A
trailing cold front from this low will extend southwestward into the
Lower Mississippi River Valley. Models still tend to develop another
low pressure area along the front, still generally near the ArkLaTex
region late morning to midday Saturday, then quickly lift off into
TN/KY by the end of the day. Although much weaker in comparison to
the parent low pressure system up in Canada, what this new low does
is that it allows for a strong 850mb LLJ (still on the order of 60-
70 kts) to set up across our area and over much of the Deep South
Saturday afternoon, with much our area under the favored right
entrance region of the LLJ. This also helps to reorient the 850mb
winds from southwesterly to a more due southerly direction
especially as we get into the afternoon hours. The cold front will
pass through the area Saturday evening and into the overnight hours,
with drier air pushing in behind it.
Severe Potential: We continue to monitor the potential for a high-
impact severe outbreak, mainly during the Saturday afternoon and
evening hours. SPC now has our entire forecast area under a MODERATE
Risk (Level 4 of 5) for severe storms. Although a few isolated
severe storms could be possible during the morning hours, models
continue to mainly suggest that the greatest threat still appears to
be in the afternoon and evening hours across our area. If morning
storms do develop, they will quite possibly be severe as well. As
mentioned before, plenty of forcing will be in place across the
area, along with ample deep-layer moisture (PWATs up to 1.6-1.7
inches across the region by the afternoon afternoon/evening hours).
Shear will also be quite strong once the LLJ kicks in and upper-
level shortwave energy spreads across the area (0-6km shear over 60
kts; 0-1km shear nearly 40-45 kts). As for instability, our local
will be be firmly be entrenched within the warm sector of the
system. Rather steep lapse rates from 6.5 to around 7.5 C/km will be
present throughout the entire column. Adding in the diurnal surface
heating component, along with dew points in the upper 60s to low
70s, SBCAPE values will likely rise above 2000 J/kg by the afternoon
hours. Shear and instability this high will easily support supercell
organization and robust updrafts. On top of that, the reorientation
of the 850mb winds as the LLJ kicks in gives way to large, looping
hodographs. Assuming supercells follow the right-moving track, these
storms will be able to utilize over 300 m2/s2 of 0-1km SRH. In
addition, storms will also be able to ingest pure streamwise
vorticity through much of the low level column, and this will lead
to strongly rotating updrafts that have the potential to produce
several long-track tornadoes, some of which could be EF2+ in
intensity. While the morning convection is somewhat questionable, by
afternoon developing storms will likely take the form of discrete
supercells which, not only carries the significant tornado
potential, but also the potential for large hail and damaging winds.
By the evening hours, a second round of storms will make its way
through the local area, likely in the form of a broken line of
supercells. This second round will more than likely occur closer to
the actual frontal passage and effect primarily the central and
eastern portions of the forecast area. Tornadoes and hail will once
again be possible with this round, along with damaging to
destructive winds.
Other Hazards: Outside of thunderstorms, gusty winds will be in
place across much of the area as a result of a tightening pressure
gradient and developing LLJ. Current forecast has wind gusts across
the area of around 30 to 35 mph, with higher gusts possible. Not
quite enough to need a Wind Advisory, but we will monitor trends and
a Wind Advisory may still be needed for Saturday and could be issued
later today. These strong winds will also create dangerous surf
conditions across area beaches. A High Risk of Rip Currents will be
in place through the weekend, along with a High Surf Advisory
beginning at midnight tonight and continuing through Noon Saturday
for breakers along the beach of up to 7 feet. For now we left the
High Surf Warning in effect from Noon Saturday through 6am Sunday
for breakers up to 9 or 10 feet. We will also continue to monitor
for the potential of some minor coastal flooding. At this point,
with us being in a neap tide, guidance is not overly enthused about
us reaching coastal flood criteria. With that being said and using
previous events as a baseline, we cannot rule out some
overwash/minor flooding over some of our typical flood-prone areas
along the coast due to the strong southerly winds in place.
High temps on Saturday generally in the mid 70s lower 80s. Lows
Saturday night will be cooling off from west to east with the
frontal passage, ranging from the low to mid 50s west of the I-65
corridor to the upper 50s and lower 60s for locations to the east of
I-65 in south central AL and over the western FL panhandle. DS/12
Sunday through Thursday...
The squall line (or broken line of supercells) should be east of the
area as we roll into the morning hours on Sunday. Temperatures will
still be mild in the morning on Sunday with overnight lows tanking
into the upper 30s to low 40s in the wake of the cold front. A
surface high builds into the region as we roll into early next week
and the area remains dry through mid-week or so. The high slides
east of the area through the day on Tuesday, but we'll manage to
maintain one more night of chilly overnight lows (Monday night)
before the southerly flow on the backside of the high kicks in.
Moisture begins to return as we head into the evening hours on
Wednesday ahead of another cold front. It looks like we'll have a
brief window of opportunity for showers and a few storms overnight
Wednesday into early Thursday ahead of and along the cold front. At
this point, there doesn't appear to be a severe threat with the
quick-hitting late week system.
Beach and Coastal Forecast - The high surf will steadily come down
through the day on Sunday, but will still likely remain above
advisory levels through Sunday night. The risk of rip currents
remains HIGH through at least Sunday night, but should decrease to a
MODERATE quickly through the day on Monday. 07/mb

Conditions are currently quickly dropping to IFR/LIFR across most
of the region, primarily with regard to low ceilings at the
300-400 foot level. Expect these low ceilings to continue
overnight, with a few locations also having surface vsby's down to
the LIFR (or VLIFR) level in dense fog. Even in areas without
dense fog, there will be at least some restrictions to surface
vsby due to fog across most of the area for the remainder of the
night.Winds primarily out of the south at 5 to 10 knots tonight.
Fog and low clouds lift by around 15Z this morning, with MVFR to
VFR conditions expected for most locations today. May see a few
