- A wintry mix of light freezing drizzle and light snow is
  expected tonight. Less than an inch of snowfall accumulation,
  along with a glaze to 0.05 inches of ice are expected. Slick
  roads are possible for the early Thursday morning commute.

- Gales are expected Thursday into Thursday night across the
  open and nearshore waters of Lake Michigan. Winds diminish
  late Thursday night into Friday morning.

- Accumulating snowfall is likely (60 to 80 percent chances) on
  Saturday into Saturday evening.

Issued 1020 AM CST Wed Feb 5 2025

CAMs still hint at a 20-30% chance of snow flurries / light
snow showers this afternoon associated with a band of mid-level
FGEN. If this feature does develop, it would appear on radar as
a west-east broken line (or widely scattered line) of flurries
/ light snow, moving from the WI/IL border around noon,
progressing north and moving clear of the northern CWA
(Sheboygan to Montello WI) around 5-6 PM. Even if this feature
were to develop (and snow reaches the ground, which is not a
guarantee due to evaporation/sublimation), we would expect a
dusting (a few tenths of an inch) or less of accumulation.

Satellite imagery (GOES Day Cloud Phase RGB) resolves a
reinforced area of the existing low-level clouds (formed by
lake-effect), riding the southeast winds on the lake into
Sheboygan County (and likely the entire rest of our area,
though upper- level clouds obscure the satellite's view further
south). Hence, a lake effect flurry cannot be completely ruled
out either (though lack of forcing for ascent precludes the
concern of any accumulations beyond a light dusting).

For the Tonight period, the forecast remains on track as stated
in the SHORT TERM AFD. More widespread chances for precipitation
arrive after 6 PM CST today.

.SHORT TERM...
Issued 439 AM CST Wed Feb 5 2025

Today through Thursday:

Lake effect low clouds over southern and eastern portions of the
area should slowly push northward this morning. Middle to high
clouds will continue to push through the area as well.

There is still some chance (20 to 30 percent) for an area of
light snow to develop within an area of 700 to 500 mb
frontogenesis response across southern parts of the area later
this morning and push northward this afternoon. Forecast
soundings continue to show saturation in the dendrite growth
zone at this level, but the air beneath it remains fairly dry.
There may be just flurries or no precipitation if this dry
layer cannot be overcome. Thus, kept lower end chances (20 to 30
percent) in the forecast later this morning into this
afternoon. Some lake effect flurries may also occur.

Still expecting the light wintry mix of light freezing drizzle
and some light snow to move across the area tonight. Steady warm
air advection in the low to middle levels, with some
differential CVA, provides the modest at best upward vertical
motion. The better focus for upward motion remains to the
northwest and south of the area.

Forecast soundings are still struggling to saturate through a
deep layer at times during this period. They continue to lose
ice crystals in parts of the area and bring light freezing
drizzle, though northern portions of the area may see some
saturation here and bring some light snow at times. Peak period
looks to be 03Z to 09Z Thursday, so kept highest PoPs (60 to 80
percent) in that period. It should end by 12Z Thursday at the
latest in the far northeast parts of the area.

Probabilities from short term ensembles suggest ice
accumulations will be under 0.10 inches and likely under 0.05
inches, with snowfall around 0.5 inches or less as well in
northern parts of the area. Given the timing of this and the
very light nature of the wintry mix, did not issue a Winter
Weather Advisory. Impacts should be relatively minor, with
untreated roads possibly becoming slick in spots. The early
Thursday morning commute may be affected, with lingering
wetness on untreated road surfaces. Will continue to monitor
the impact potential in later shifts.

A tight pressure gradient develops Thursday with strong cold air
advection kicking in later in the day. This should help bring
gusty west to northwest winds into the area Thursday, with good
downward momentum mixing Thursday afternoon. Sustained winds to
30 knots and gusts to 45 knots are looking more likely across at
least northern and eastern portions of the area. A Wind Advisory
may be needed in later forecasts for later Thursday morning into
Thursday afternoon.

.LONG TERM...

Thursday night through Tuesday:

Colder temperatures will push into the area Thursday night
within the cold air advection and gusty northwest winds. Winds
should gradually subside Friday into Friday night, as high
pressure shifts through the region.

Models and their ensembles suggest low pressure shifting from
Missouri through the Ohio River Valley Saturday into Saturday
night, with a fairly potent 500 mb shortwave trough shifting
through the region later Saturday into Saturday evening. It
appears that these systems are trying to phase with each other
over the region Saturday. There remains some uncertainty with
the details, but it looks like there will be a period of
accumulating snow during this time. This will be a system to
watch, as there may be enough accumulations to cause some
travel impacts. Keep up with the forecast for this period.

It looks relatively dry into early next week, with temperatures
near or a little below seasonal normal.

Lake Effect MVFR clouds (around 2,000 ft) expected to linger
today due to southeast winds, gradually mixing closer to 3,000
ft through the daytime hours. There is a 20-30% chance for
flurries this afternoon (noon-6 PM), at worst we could see a
dusting of accumulation. More widespread chances for precip
arrive after 6 PM this evening, with a wintry mix of light snow
and freezing drizzle and winds turning southerly. Rates will be
very light, and totals are still expected to be a fraction of an
inch (snow) and/or a glaze of ice (a few hundredths of an inch)
at best. Visibilities of 2 to 5 SM may occur tonight with the
precip, along with ceilings lowering to below 1,000 ft (IFR
looking likely early Thursday morning).

High pressure around 30.6 inches over northeast Minnesota will
move across the Great Lakes and into New England today. Winds
will shift southeasterly and increase this afternoon, becoming
southerly tonight.

Low pressure around 29.7 inches over southeast Manitoba tonight
will shift into east central Ontario Thursday, strengthening to
29.3 inches. The low will push further to the east Thursday
night, as high pressure around 30.4 inches moves into the
northern Plains.

A Small Craft Advisory is in effect tonight into Thursday
morning for the nearshore waters of Lake Michigan, for gusty
southeast to south winds and building waves. Winds will veer
west and remain gusty Thursday morning.

The combination of the low pressure to the east and high
pressure to the west will allow for strong west to northwest
winds to develop Thursday into Thursday night across Lake
Michigan. A Gale Warning has been issued for most of this
period for the open waters and nearshore waters.

High waves are expected across eastern portions of the lake
during this period. Freezing spray is also expected Thursday
night into Friday.

High pressure around 30.3 inches will move into the region
Friday and to the east Friday night. This will result in
westerly winds gradually subsiding during this period.
