- Potential for severe thunderstorms Monday night (risk level 4
  out of 5 in the west, risk level 3 in the east, except 2 along
  the lakeshore). Initial indications are that this activity
  will peak late Monday evening into the overnight with all
  hazard types possible.

- Warm and windy during the day Monday with high temperatures
  near 80 and southerly wind gusts up to 40 mph.

- Gale Watch in effect for the north half of Lake Michigan from
  late Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning. Small Craft

Forecast remains on track, with a wing of initial WAA driven
cloud cover moving west to east across southern Wisconsin. A
window of clear skies early this afternoon will assist with
temperatures rising into the 60s away from Lake Michigan this
afternoon, while southeasterly breezes will keep lakeshore
regions in the 50s and immediate shorelines in the upper 40s.

.SHORT TERM...
Issued 421 AM CDT Sun Apr 27 2025

Today through Monday:

High pressure over the Upper Great Lakes will exit today and low
pressure will begin gathering strength in the lee of the
Rockies. A wing of 850mb warm air advection is producing light,
high-based showers over southern WI early this morning. These
will dissipate as they track into central WI later in the
morning. There is uncertainty about sky cover today, as high
clouds may hinder our warming a bit. Assuming we have mostly
sunny skies this afternoon, the increasing southerly winds will
help usher warmer temps into the area, with highs reaching the
upper 60s inland from Lake Michigan.

Vorticity advection and the nose of the low level jet will push
into MN and western WI Sunday night and translate east-
northeast Monday morning between 12Z and 15Z. Southern WI will
be on the eastern periphery of the anticipated elevated showers
and thunderstorms. Elevated CAPE will be in around 500 j/kg
with modest shear. Hail is the main threat with any storms that
can develop, especially those toward central WI.

It will be very warm and windy on Monday with a lull in any
"weather" between mid morning and mid afternoon. Highs will
approach 80 inland from Lake Michigan which is well above
normal (records are in the mid to upper 80s). Southerly winds
will ramp up by mid morning and become strongest in the late
afternoon and early evening, thanks to the increasing pressure
gradient and deeper mixing. A low level jet with winds in excess
of 40 kt east of Madison and 50 kt west will trek overhead
during this time. We are not expecting to mix all the way up to
the LLJ level, so gusts should remain below the threshold of
39kt/45 mph but it may be close.

That strong LLJ at 850mb will also put a strong cap over
southern WI Monday afternoon. Models vary on the strength of
that capping inversion Monday afternoon, but it will play a role
in our storm chances (and severity) for that period. A leading
shortwave trough is anticipated to slide across southern WI
Monday afternoon and may trigger thunderstorms (more likely west
of Madison than east). With very high deep layer shear of 40kt
and MUCAPE nearing 1500 j/kg, storms would be strong. If this
shortwave is strong enough, it may allow for surface-based
convection rather than just some elevated convection, and
parameters would be favorable for supercells. This is the
scenario that is prompting the SPC Moderate Risk for much of
western Wisconsin. There is a lot of conditional wording here
and that is exactly what our afternoon storm chances will be.
The hi-res models are just getting into the forecast range of
this event and many of them keep southern WI dry (and capped)
for Monday afternoon.

The main show for southern WI will be associated with the
low level frontal boundary that will cross the area later
Monday evening through the overnight and the overall severe
risk with this is damaging wind. The timing of this front
slowed down from previous model forecasts. The strongly sheared
and marginally unstable environment favors line segments ahead
of and along this front. The 0-3km shear should be over 40 kt
and at a favorable orientation to the anticipated lines of
storms, so there is a threat for QLCS (squall line) tornadoes.
Given the time of day (overnight), there is some uncertainty
about a surface inversion that could inhibit circulations from
reaching the ground, but the overall forcing should be strong
enough to overcome that.

There is still so much uncertainty regarding the coverage of
storms, as several models do not even produce them for most of
our area. The bottom line is that the ingredients will be
present for severe storms, but there are many limiting factors
that could win out for this event.

Wednesday:
High pressure remains dominant, with mostly dry weather. A
sprinkle of rain cannot be completely ruled out (generally < 15%
chances) in southern WI ahead of the next (weaker) low pressure
system. Light east to southeast winds keep lakeshore areas cooler.

Thursday and onwards:
Weak low pressure is expected to track from the southern Great
Plains towards the southern tip of Lake Michigan Wednesday night
through Thursday, continuing northeastward and deepening
thereafter. Rain showers looking likely at times on Thursday as
the low makes its closest approach, with chances tapering off into
Friday. High pressure then moves in for Saturday, likely with dry
weather. Temperatures remain fairly steady through this period,
with high temps in the ballpark of low 60s inland and 50s by the
lakeshore.

VFR conditions expected through today into tonight, with a
scattered deck of diurnal cumulus possible this afternoon.

Southeasterly winds shift southerly and remain gusty around 15
kt tonight. Late tonight into early Monday morning, a warm front
will lift across southern Wisconsin, bringing chances (20-40
percent) of thunderstorms with MVFR ceilings. A few storms may
be capable of producing hail. After sunrise Monday, southerly
winds quickly increase, with gusts to 30 kt expected by midday.
A break in potential rainfall is expected midday Monday into
Monday afternoon. However, severe storms are possible late
Monday evening into Monday night.

High pressure will linger over the Great Lakes region today,
leading to light and variable winds on Lake Michigan.

Low pressure will track from South Dakota to northeast
Minnesota Monday, then to Quebec by mid Tuesday morning. Expect
breezy southerly winds over Lake Michigan Monday through Monday
night. Southerly gales are looking more likely for the north
half late Monday afternoon through Monday night. However, there
will be a strong inversion over the cooler open waters, so there
is uncertainty that the very strong winds of over 50 kt just
off the surface will be able to mix down. Issued a Gale Watch
for the north half.

There is a potential for strong to severe thunderstorms Monday
night, likely with lines of storms. The associated cold front
will cross Lake Michigan Tuesday morning. Gusty westerly winds are
expected to be just below gale force. Winds will diminish quickly
Tuesday night as high pressure around 30.2 inches moves into the
region.
