.KEY MESSAGES...

- The risk for tornadoes has been removed from the forecast
  today.

- Scattered thunderstorms will produce a high volume of small
  hail (pea sized), with a few storms capable of producing hail
  up to quarter sized.

- There is a low (<5%) chance of a few damaging wind gusts given
  strong low level winds, though this will be the exception
  rather than the rule.

- Rain quickly changes over to wet, slushy snow from northwest
  to southeast late this afternoon through this evening.
  Uncertainty with snow amounts remains high at this time.

- A wind advisory remains in effect tonight for wind gusts to
  around 45mph. If there is enough snow accumulation, blowing
  and drifting snow will result in travel impacts.

- A few other systems to watch for Friday and then again Sunday
  into Monday. The latter will bring potential for snow.

.UPDATE...
Issued 900 AM CDT Wed Mar 19 2025

Dynamic upper low is gearing up, with the upper low over
northeastern Kansas and a surface low intensifying over
northwestern Missouri. This surface low will move east-northeast
through the day today into northern Illinois.

This will keep the surface warm front to the south of southern
Wisconsin. Strong low level warm advection up and over this warm
front will result in an expanding area of showers and
thunderstorms. Steepening lapse rates will support increasing
MUCAPE and a risk for hail. Over the past few hours, convection
has blossomed over Iowa, with a newer band of storms developing
over eastern Iowa in the past hour. Reports from this activity
indicate a high volume of small hail, capable of covering the
ground (in some cases an inch deep), with more sporadic reports
of larger stones between 0.5 and 0.75 inch.

We will once again contend with increasing, strong low level
winds. Will continue to monitoring for the potential to mix down
a few strong gusts, but this will be the exception rather than
the rule and confined to areas adjacent to the state line.

With the surface warm front now staying well into Illinois, the
tornado risk has been removed from the forecast.

Over the next few hours we will be refining the snow forecast.
The timing for changeover still looks good, however there
remains unusually high uncertainty with accumulation potential.

.SHORT TERM...
Issued 430 AM CDT Wed Mar 19 2025

Today and Tonight:

Very interesting system expected today with lots of variability
still remaining depending on how this tracks. Latest trends have
shifted the track a little southeast. Currently the low pressure
system is beginning to slide east northeast toward the CWA.
Given some dry midlevels we will likely (80-90%) hold off on
much precip early this morning but as daybreak hits expect to
see increasing chance across the southwest quickly expanding
across the western portion of the CWA by the mid morning.

This progression will be primarily driven aloft with the upper
closed low nudging into the region with strong WAA and
increasing moisture in the midlevels. By mid to late morning
most CAMs show a period of showers and possibly weak storms
swinging through southern WI associated with a tongue of low
level moisture sliding through the region. Not much instability
is to be expected this morning but will gradually increase a
bit through the day. One of the more recent changes to the
forecast is the likelihood (60-70%) that the warm front will
stay south of the CWA which will take away the risk for any weak
tornadoes but the risk for elevated storms remains. For severe
chances (5-10%), the main concern will be hail, primarily
during the afternoon, especially given the low freezing levels.
Overall this doesn't appear to be much of a severe risk given
limited instability but a few hailers cannot be ruled out. If
the warm front overperforms and lifts further north than
expected that could reintroduce a wind and tornado threat to our
southern tier of counties.

Into the late afternoon and evening, as the system starts to
slide more eastward we will start to see the cold front push
through will rapid cooling behind it. This will lead to a rapid
transition of rain to snow from late Wed afternoon through Wed
night. There may (50%) be a brief period of sleet in between
given the "zig-zag" sounding profile but this would be very
brief, but its worth mentioning as a potential impact point.

The uncertainty with respect to snow has actually grown
somewhat given more disjointedness with fgen that leaves us
questioning whether we will see some of the better snow rates
areas to the north of us get. In addition models seem to be
suggesting that fgen to the south in Illinois with actually be
be slightly better with help from the base of the upper low that
could make much of the CWA miss better snow potential to the
north and south. This is also due in part to the potential (30%)
that we could lose some of our cloud ice into the late evening
and overnight period. Some models do show this potential and if
it were to occur we would see potential (30%) for some patchy
freezing drizzle. This remains fairly uncertain but could play
a role for potential impacts tonight.

Overall expect the highest snow amounts of 1-3 inches in the
far north/northwest parts of the CWA and possibly in the far
southeast portions as well with much of the rest of the area
likely seeing a trace up to an inch or so. There remains
uncertainty with this as shifts in the track of the highest QPF
and timing of the changeover to snow could impact totals across
the region but generally most of southern WI should expect to
see less than 3 inches of snow.

In addition to snow concerns, we will have concerns for strong
winds as low level sounding profiles overnight look to remain
unstable and capable of mixing down winds, with help from
precip loading, from a fairly strong LLJ. Given this concern we
have issued a Wind Advisory from 7pm tonight until 7am Thursday
morning. Its worth noting that the combination of these winds
with whatever snow we end up seeing could lead to hazardous
driving conditions and could make the snow more impactful so a
winter weather advisory for this remains a possibility.

Thursday through Tuesday:

The system will finally push out by Thursday morning with higher
pressure nudging directly in behind it. This should allow for
some continued breezy conditions Thursday morning but they will
subside as the high pushes all the way by the afternoon.
Thursday will remain fairly chilly but we as we move into Friday
we should expect to warm back up a bit into the 50s. This will
be due to increasing southerly flow ahead of another low
pressure system swinging down from the north Central Plains.
Winds will become fairly gusty Friday with any rain likely to
hold off until late Friday afternoon into the overnight. Plenty
of uncertainty with this still primarily due to moisture
concerns in the low to mid levels, though forcing looks good
with a fairly strong shortwave pushing through. Overall some
rain is expected but it could be

High pressure and weak large scale ridging will move back in
and dominate the region for Saturday and Saturday night before
another system pushes in from the west for Sunday. The upper
levels look to bring a fairly strong system through with good
forcing and moisture profile. The uncertainties with this system
will likely be more related to where the best forcing and thus
QPF end up being and how cold the system is because it could
bring some snow accumulations as the 540 line will likely be
around southern WI based on average model track. Any northward
or southward shift should change potential snow amounts quite a
bit. Monday is a bit more uncertain as the low could linger
bringing additional snow chances. Tuesday and beyond it looks a
bit more quiet but looks to be on the cooler side, at least
initially.

Over the next few hours MVFR/`IFR CIGS are expected to develop
across parts of southern WI and overspreading the area by mid
morning. Rain showers will start to push into southwest WI after
daybreak with increasing chances for a rumble of thunder later
into the morning hours. VSBYS will have the potential to be
impacted with precip but are expected to remain largely MVFR
outside of the potential for a few heavier rain showers and/or
storms. LIFR CIGS will remain a possibility during the
afternoon primarily but also lingering into the evening.
Potential for showers/weak storms will continue through the
afternoon with precipitation starting to turn to snow from
northwest to southeast from the late afternoon/early evening
through the overnight period. VSBYS will see more potential
impact from snow than from rain especially with northwest winds
really picking up in the evening and overnight hours. Conditions
will start to clam down with a return to VFR by Thursday
morning.

The low pressure will begin to slide east northeast and begin to
weaken slightly today, with the warm front sitting across the
southern open waters for much of the day today. This will result
in southeast winds over the southern third of the lake and
north to northeast winds further north. Small Craft Advisory
remains in effect for the northern 3 tiers of the nearshore due
to breezy winds and waves from 5hail-8 feet. The southernmost
tier will go into a Small Craft Advisory for a brief period
later this afternoon for waves to 4 feet.

The low will move across southern Lake Michigan tonight, resulting
in a northwest wind shift over the entirety of the open waters.
Northeasterly gale force gusts are expected to begin this morning
across northwestern parts of the lake with gales gradually
expanding especially as winds shift to the northwest. At least
gale force gusts are expected into Thursday, potentially lingering
into the afternoon. In addition, there is increased concern for
storm force gusts over the central portions of the lake late
tonight. Gale Warnings for the northern two thirds of the lake
will go into effect later this morning with Gale Warning across
the entire lake by 0z. Storm Warning goes into effect for the
central lake from 6z until 14z before we return to a Gale Warnings
for the entire lake until 18z with Gale Warning in the southern
two thirds until 21z. Small Craft will be upgraded to a Gale
Warning for the northern tier beginning at 18z with the rest of
the nearshore going into a Gale Warning beginning at 0z
Thursday. Nearshore Gale Warning will end 15z Thursday.

Widespread rain is anticipated over Lake Michigan Wednesday, with
a few thunderstorms possible in the southern open waters. Rain
will change to snow tonight as colder air moves in from Canada.
Freezing spray appears unlikely at this time. There will be
additional chances for gales Friday as well.

         prolific amounts of pea to penny sized hail.
