WEDNESDAY MORNING...

.A deepening upper level low pressure system will interact with an 
approaching Arctic cold front to bring impactful snowfall to the 
Midsouth Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning. At this time, 
snowfall of 3 to 5 inches is forecast north of Interstate 40. Up to 
6 inches will be possible in localized bands near Missouri and 
Kentucky borders. South of I-40, a mixture of light freezing rain, 
sleet and snow is forecast, with snow amounts generally 1 to 3 
inches.

...A WINTER STORM REMAINS ON TRACK TO IMPACT THE MIDSOUTH TONIGHT...

.An upper level low pressure system will interact with an 
approaching Arctic cold front to bring impactful snowfall to the 
Midsouth tonight. Snowfall of 3 to 5 inches is forecast north of 
Interstate 40, with highest amounts expected over far northeast 
Arkansas and the Missouri bootheel. South of I-40, a mixture of 
sleet and snow is expected this evening, with snow likely to follow 
overnight. Snow amounts are forecast to range from 1 to 3 inches in 
the Interstate 40 corridor, with lesser amounts to the south. Due to 
banded nature of snow, locally higher amounts of snow will be 
possible across the Midsouth by Wednesday morning.

 - A winter storm will affect the Midsouth Tuesday evening through
   Wednesday morning. Impactful accumulations of snow are expected
   along and north of Interstate 40. Minor accumulations of sleet
   and freezing drizzle are possible along and south of Interstate
   40 Tuesday evening.

 - Record cold temperatures are forecast for the mid to late
   portion of this week behind a strong Arctic cold frontal
   passage Tuesday night. Wind chills will drop to the single
   digits over most of the Midsouth Wednesday morning. Sub-zero
   wind chills are forecast Thursday morning over West Tennessee,
   eastern Arkansas and the Missouri bootheel.

Surface analysis this evening places a 1029 mb surface high over
eastern Nebraska. Strong cold air advection and gusty northwest
winds are resulting in cold temperatures near freezing at most
locations this evening. GOES-16 satellite data shows the back edge
of the stratus along and just east of the Mississippi River.
Short-term trends suggest this cloud cover will continue to
gradually erode overnight into Monday morning. Some adjustments
will be made to cloud cover and temperatures to account for
trends. Otherwise, the forecast remains in great shape overall.

Following yesterday's significant flooding and tornado event over
portions of the Midsouth, our attention turns to potential for
impactful snow accumulations along and north of I-40 Tuesday
night. As snow exits early Wednesday morning, bitterly cold Arctic
air will flow into the Midsouth and persist through early Saturday.

Medium range guidance continues to converge on likely impactful
snow accumulations Tuesday night. A deepening northern branch
trough will move from the central Rockies into the MS River
Valley by Tuesday night, pivoting under 531dam 500mb closed low
over the upper Midwest. By early Tuesday morning, strong 700mb
frontogenesis will develop over eastern KS and southern MO, under
the right entrance region of a strengthening upper jet core. The
region of midlevel frontogenesis will sag southeast into the
Midsouth Tuesday evening, before weakening and translating east
with the upper trof by sunrise Wednesday. Today's 12Z guidance
delays on the onset of wintry precip a few hours to mid-Tuesday
evening, but is otherwise consistent with previous guidance. ECMWF
has joined the GFS in briefly depicting a modest elevated warm
layer around Memphis Tuesday evening. As such, a brief period of
sleet and/or freezing rain or freezing drizzle will be possible.
To the north, snow will be be favored Tuesday evening, from
northeast Arkansas through northwest Tennessee. Snow/liquid ratios
(SLR) will initially range from 8:1 around Memphis to 12:1 north
of Jonesboro. As Arctic air sweeps in overnight Tuesday night, QPF
will taper off toward sunrise, but with SLRs increasing to around
15:1 areawide.

The net result will likely be 3 to 6 inches of snow for areas
north of I-40, increasing with northward extent. For the Memphis
metro, and the I-40 corridor to the east, 1-3 inches appears to
be the most likely scenario. A Winter Storm Watch will be issued
for areas roughly along and north of I-40. For reference, the
Watch/Warning criteria for a Winter Storm is 3 inches over the
aforementioned areas.

South of I-40, including north MS and east central AR, Tuesday
night snow amounts are likely to total less than 1 inch, possibly
accompanied by a brief mixture by sleet and freezing rain. This
mixed precip will likely necessitate the issuance of a Winter
Weather Advisory as we near the event.

Other than a few flurries Wednesday, the remainder of the
week will remain dry. The main impact will be record cold
temperatures, brought by Arctic high pressure dropping southeast
out of the northern Great Plains. The center of the high will
settle into the Ohio River Valley by Saturday. Temperatures will
be slow to modify during the latter half of the work week,
particularly over snow-covered areas north of I-40. A Cold Weather
Advisory will likely be issued over the next day or two.

In summary, another week of winter lies ahead, before we return to
a more seasonal pattern in the remaining few days of February.
