- Temperatures will moderate into today with highs returning back
  into the lower 70s. Rain and thunder chances return on
  Wednesday as another cold front moves through the region.

- Gusty winds are also expected today and Wednesday. Some wind
  gusts above above 40 miles per hour could occur either day.

- Rain chances increase this weekend ahead of a new system.
  Thunderstorms are possible as well Sunday afternoon. Some
  storms could be severe.

Upper ridging continues to persist across the central CONUS
this morning. At the surface, high pressure is currently sliding
to the east of the Midsouth with southerly winds increasing in
strength on its back side. These winds have started to warm the
region with lows only expected to drop into the 40s and 50s this
morning, climbing into the 70s this afternoon. Gradient winds will
also pick up this afternoon where wind gusts up to 30 mph are
possible with clear skies.

A new shortwave trough will approach the region tonight through
Wednesday. A strong surface low will develop over the central
Plains, further increasing the gradient winds across the region
Wednesday with a north/south cold front moving into the area. The
atmosphere will be dry during this time, containing PWATs < .5",
that will be conducive for strong boundary layer mixing. As the
surface low approaches, mixing of winds from within its associated
low-level jet will allow for gusts above 40 mph during the
afternoon. Additionally, thanks to the strong surface pressure
gradient, sustained winds are likely to be sustained above 25 mph
near the Mississippi River. Winds are expected to be diurnally
drive and will decrease in intensity after sunset.

Alongside the wind threat, southerly moisture transport will allow
for some instability to form ahead of the front. Although dew
points will only get into the 50s outside of northeast
Mississippi. This instability will be shallow as surface and
elevated parcels are forecast to only reach 700-500 mb. This will
yield MLCAPE ~ 500 J/kg Wednesday evening just ahead of the front
within a region of 50+ knots of bulk shear. As such, some showers,
and possibly thunderstorms, are possible, containing damaging
winds and small hail at most. However, the coverage of any thunder
is still in question due to the presence moderate MLCIN through
much of the day and the shallow nature of the instability profile.
Regardless, some showers are likely along the cold front into the
evening with light rainfall accumulations through Wednesday.

Cooler temperatures will follow into Thursday behind the cold
front. High temperatures Thursday are forecast to be below average
in the 50s across the entire region. High pressure will then keep
things dry into the weekend before the next upper wave approaches
from the northwest. More moisture advection ahead of this system
will allow for rain and thunder chances to increase Sunday as a
surface cold front passes. The past day's 12z/00z LREF joint
probabilities of > 500 MUCAPE and > 30 knots of bulk shear are in
excess of 50% across the north Mississippi and east Arkansas
Sunday evening, diminishing with northerly extent. At this time,
long-range deterministic guidance displays curved hodographs and
CAPE > 1000 J/kg which would hint at the threat for all severe
hazards. Regardless, ensembles are still attempting to nail down
the specific timing and position of the surface front on top of
the upper trough which will impact the magnitude of the severe
threat. The front will pass Sunday night with cooler temperatures
to end out the forecast.

An approaching cold front will continue tightening the pressure
gradient throughout the period, causing subsequently gusty surface
winds from the south/southwest up to 30 and even 35 kts at times,
especially tomorrow afternoon. In addition, this same front will
come with a LLWS-inducing 925 mb jet. Have carried several hours'
worth of southwesterly LLWS in the 45-55 kt range at all sites
starting shortly after midnight. Opted not to include any precip
with this issuance as the convection will likely not even
materialize until after 18Z. Expect some MVFR ceilings around
sunrise through noon Wednesday, returning to VFR shortly
thereafter.
