  this morning. Meanwhile, rain chances have diminished greatly,

  Permian Basin this morning.

- Strong winds develop across the area on Thursday. A High Wind
  Watch is in effect for the Guadalupe, Delaware, and Davis
  Mountains and Eddy County beginning Thursday morning through the
  evening, though this will likely (60-80% confidence) be updated
  to a warning at a later time.

- Well above normal temperatures and drier weather arrive on
  Friday and continue into next week. No rain, mostly sunny
  skies, and temperatures 10 to 20 degrees above normal can be
  expected.

Low clouds and developing fog are evident across much of the Permian
Basin and southeast New Mexico. These conditions are expected to
persist into the morning hours Wednesday as temperatures remain in
the mid 30s to upper 40s across most of the region and the air
remains quite saturated. We will continue to monitor visibilities to
determine if a dense fog advisory will be necessary later this
morning.

Unfortunately, rain chances have continued to diminish areawide,
with only a low to medium (20-50%) confidence in showers developing
in the northeastern Permian Basin this morning. By later this
afternoon into tonight, a low (10-20%) confidence of showers will
remain for the far eastern Permian Basin, though most hi-res
guidance suggests showers and thunderstorms develop just outside of
our area. As a result, we have also trended down on rainfall totals,
such that we have a medium to high confidence (60-80%) that no one
receives more than 0.1 inches. Highs today will top out in the upper
50s and low 60s for the majority of the region as dense cloud cover
helps keep temperatures down. However, overnight clearing skies will
help promote better radiational cooling, dropping lows back into the
low to mid 30s for most.

Winds increase Thursday as an upper-level jet moves over the area.
Have elected not to promote the High Wind Watch to a warning yet or
introduce any Wind Advisories, though this will likely (60-80%
confidence) be done in a future forecast package. Highs Thursday
once again top out in the upper 50s and lower 60s behind the weak
cold front associated with the departing upper-level weather system.
Nevertheless, a warming trend is imminent.

.LONG TERM...

Much warmer and quieter weather is in store for the long term
forecast period. Once our current weather system clears the southern
Great Plains late this week, no major weather systems are expected
through much of the following week. Thursday night into early Friday
sees the base of our upper-level weather system move over the
region. Gusty westerly winds start the forecast before weakening
Friday afternoon as this system departs to the northeast. Upper-
level ridging and high pressure replace this weather system by the
weekend into next week. With this general pattern, dry conditions,
sunny skies, and well above normal temperatures are expected.
Widespread middle 60s arrive by Friday as 70s are ushered in by
Saturday. There is high confidence that temperatures well into the
70s and even 80s arrives by this weekend through much of next week.
These temperatures approach 15 to 20 degrees above normal at their
peak, a stark contrast to our relatively cold January. Similarly,
below freezing temperatures are absent as middle 30s to middle 40s
during the overnight hours is to be expected. All in all, enjoy the
early taste of Spring.
