- Critical to extreme fire weather conditions are expected across
  the region today and Tuesday.

- Strong winds return to west Texas and southeast New Mexico
  Tuesday afternoon. A High Wind Watch is in effect for parts of
  the area, and additional products are likely to be issued closer
  to time (> 70% confidence).

- No precipitation chances through the extended, with episodic
  increased fire weather whenever gusty winds are present.

Water vapor imagery shows ridging aloft over southeast New Mexico
and west Texas. Meanwhile, a surface trough begins to develop
this afternoon, causing southerly winds to increase through the
evening. The combination of these two effects will result in
above- normal temperatures across the area today, with most
locations topping out in the 80s (and some 90s along the Rio
Grande). Likewise, overnight lows will around 5 degrees above
normal (upper 40s and low 50s) for most.

Things get a bit more interesting on Tuesday. Yet another system
approaches the area, and a lee cyclone begins to develop in eastern
Colorado that afternoon. As a result, winds will once again
strengthen across the region Tuesday afternoon into the evening. At
this time, it appears the strongest winds will be in southeast New
Mexico and in the terrain (Guadalupe/Delaware Mountains and the
Davis Mountains). A High Wind Watch is therefore in effect for these
places during this timeframe, along with western parts of the
Permian Basin. As we get closer to time, Wind Advisories will likely
(> 70% confidence) be necessary for at least most of the remaining
areas. Blowing dust will be an additional concern, along with fire
weather (see the Fire Weather Discussion below). However, it does
not appear at this time that this wind/dust event will be as potent
as what we experienced last Friday. Highs once again top out in the
80s for most, with some 90s in the Lower Trans-Pecos and along the
Rio Grande. The system will bring in a weak cold front by Tuesday
evening/overnight. The strongest winds will coincide with this
front, and lows Tuesday night will be about 10 degrees lower
across the area.

Post-frontal conditions are expected across the region Wednesday as
surface high pressure builds in. Gusty northwest winds in the
morning will slowly diminish by afternoon. Temperatures will cool
significantly with highs mostly in the 50s and 60s. Lighter winds
and a very dry airmass will send temperatures to near or below
freezing across much of the area Thursday morning. This will be the
coldest temperatures we've seen in a few weeks. If you have planted
anything or brought plants out due to the recent warm weather you
may want to cover them. Cold-favored locations like Tatum and Marfa
will likely dip into the 20s. High pressure shifts east with gusty
southerly winds returning quickly Thursday afternoon. Temperatures
will remain cool with highs generally below 70 degrees.

Another quick moving storm moves across the Plains to our north
Friday inducing strong lee-side troughing. Southwest, downslope
winds will increase but don't look nearly as strong as what we will
see Tuesday. Nonetheless, warm and windy conditions will lead to
increased fire weather concerns. Not much changes into the weekend
with dry conditions continuing and temperatures slightly above
normal.

VFR conditions will prevail through the period. Breezy southerly
winds, becoming gusty are expected throughout the afternoon at
most terminals. The breezy southerly winds continue heading into
tonight, though gusts will be lighter. Winds shift southwesterly
and become stronger at all sites near the end of the period.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Issued at 306 AM CDT Mon Mar 17 2025

Fire weather concerns remain high through the week as extremely dry
conditions continue amid several windy storm systems. Dry return
flow behind the weekend cold front will renew critical fire weather
conditions this afternoon. RH's generally in the single digits with
winds gusting near 30 mph across the Permian Basin and SE NM warrant
the Red Flag Warning already in effect. Extremely dry fuels as
evidenced by ERC values >90th percentile will remain in place
until we see appreciably moisture return (not expected anytime
soon).

Concern grows for more widespread critical to extreme fire weather
conditions Tuesday as another strong spring storm affects the
region. Strong southwest winds will develop in response to an
intense jet over E NM. This looks to be another very dusty day which
should help to shade fuels and lower PIG especially across SE NM and
most of the Permian Basin. Even so, temperatures will be much warmer
than what we saw during last weeks storms with highs Tuesday in the
70s and 80s. The best alignment of a fire-effective LLTR and mid
level speed max will occur across the northeast Permian Basin where
RFTI values are forecast to be extremely critical (7-8). The TTU WRF
represents our forecast well showing the worst conditions occurring
along the I-20 corridor between 2 and 6 PM.

Post-frontal conditions will exist Wednesday with cooler
temperatures, but winds remaining gusty. This will be a concern for
any fire starts that occur Tuesday. Dry return flow is expected
Thursday before more critical fire weather arrives Friday.
