Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Little Rock AR 520 AM CST Tue Feb 11 2025 ...New AVIATION... .SHORT TERM... (Today through Wednesday Night) Issued at 357 AM CST Tue Feb 11 2025 CURRENTLY: As of 2 AM CST, a large shield of rainfall continues to move across Arkansas streaming from southwest to northeast across the state and tracking east-northeast. Across portions of northwestern and north-central Arkansas, light freezing rain over the last few hours led numerous observed ice accumulations ranging from a glaze to a couple tenths of an inch. The higher elevations across this region have seen the higher ice accumulations nearing a quarter of an inch in a couple locations. Luckily, this wave of wintry precipitation across parts of northern Arkansas will be coming to end over the next few hours as temperatures have fluctuated right near the freezing mark over several hours across most locations within the Winter Weather Advisory. In the higher terrain of the Winter Weather Advisory, additional isolated ice accumulation is forecast through just after sunrise across these locations that have had temperatures observed in the 28 to 30 degree range making for a much more efficient freezing rain scenario with a greater concentration of all liquid precipitation coating elevated surfaces. Regardless of elevation, locations within the Winter Weather Advisory are encouraged to expect hazardous road conditions at times, especially on elevated surfaces such as bridges. Give yourself a few extra minutes on your Tuesday morning commute to account for this hazard. TODAY (TUESDAY): Light freezing rain will end later this morning across northern Arkansas and light rain will quickly make way to widespread drizzle across the area, but thankfully temperatures across the northern tier of the state are expected to rise above the freezing mark around 9 AM CST and remain above freezing through Tuesday evening. Across the central and southern sections of Arkansas, rain will make way to drizzle by late afternoon, the good news is that this precipitation is expected to remain as liquid rain with temperatures remaining above freezing reaching into the upper 30s to upper 40s across the southern 2/3rds of the state. A cold front will track across Arkansas on Tuesday which will assist in ushering precipitation from northwest to southeast across the state throughout the day. Thankfully, the airmass that will be in the wake of this boundary will not be considerably colder than the airmass currently in place or much of the state would be dealing with wintry precipitation. Expect rain and drizzle statewide on Tuesday that will come to an end for northern and much of central Arkansas from northwest to southeast across the state with drizzle remaining present across southeastern Arkansas into Tuesday evening. Temperatures will only reach into the mid 30s to low 50s statewide. TUESDAY NIGHT/WEDNESDAY MORNING: Rain and drizzle will begin to move from southern Arkansas northward overspreading the state into the early hours on Wednesday just after midnight. The driving mechanism for this retreat of precipitation back northward across the state will be a stationary front in central Louisiana that will slowly lift northward as a warm front. As precipitation does stream back northward, another window will present itself for some additional freezing rain across portions of north-central Arkansas as the colder air behind the initial cold front does begin to reach northern Arkansas. The window will be from the early morning hours on Wednesday prior to sunrise through later Wednesday morning. Confidence remains that freezing rain will likely take place over this region; however, exact amounts remain in question, but guidance is suggesting a glaze to around a tenth of an inch of ice accrual. Confidence remains low on the amounts because forecast packages continue to waffle on the amount of freezing rain, but regardless amounts do look to remain below ice storm warning criteria. WEDNESDAY/WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Rain will remain present across the state on Wednesday and a few isolated rumbles of thunder with this activity cannot be ruled out. As the warm front continues to track northward nearing the Arkansas/Louisiana border, temperatures on Wednesday will see a brief warm-up before a cold front will rapidly track across the state and sweep the precipitation off to the east while temperatures will begin to plummet as high pressure along with a colder airmass moves into the region. && .LONG TERM... (Thursday through Monday) Issued at 357 AM CST Tue Feb 11 2025 An upper trough will be over the Midwest to begin the long term period with an upper ridge over the west coast. Southwest flow aloft will be over the southern Plains for much of the period. The trough moves east and the upper ridge enters the Plains Thursday night. This ridge moves quickly east to the east coast by Friday night as a large trough enters the Rockies. This trough moves to the east coast by Monday and northwest flow sets up over Arkansas. Surface high pressure will be over the area Thursday and Friday. Rain chances return Friday night as a cold front moves through the Plains and into Arkansas Saturday. The best instability Saturday afternoon will be in the southeast part of the state where thunderstorms will be possible. As colder air moves into the state there will be a chance of light snow mainly north Saturday night. Surface high pressure returns for Sunday and Monday with dry weather. Well below normal temperatures are anticipated for much of the period. Warmer temperatures are expected Saturday ahead of the cold front and high temperatures will reach the mid 50s to lower 70s. && .AVIATION... (12Z TAFS) Issued at 519 AM CST Tue Feb 11 2025 All sites across the state will meander between IFR and LIFR in terms of CIGS and VSBY. CIGS across most terminals are already in IFR, but will become degraded to LIFR flight category by Tuesday afternoon. VSBY across the site of KHRO will remain in IFR for the entire forecast period from early Tuesday morning through early Wednesday morning.
