.KEY MESSAGES...

-  A narrow band of snow is likely (60-90%) across parts of
   southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois tonight into Tuesday.
   Amounts within this band may approach 2" in parts of southeast
   Missouri. Farther to the north, some light snow is possible
   (30-50%), but little to no accumulation is expected.

-  An impactful winter weather system will affect the area on
   Wednesday, with a range of wintry precipitation types resulting
   in significant travel impacts.

-  Primarily snow is forecast across central and northeast
   Missouri into west-central Illinois, where a Winter Storm Watch
   remains in effect. Heavy snow is most likely along and north of
   a Moberly, MO, to Quincy, IL, line, where there is a greater
   than 60% chance of 6" of snow.

-  Further to the southeast, a wintry mix is forecast across east
   central and southeast Missouri into southwest Illinois. Sleet
   and freezing rain will cut down on snow totals in this area,
   but still lead to travel impacts. There is still some
   uncertainty as to where and when the precipitation transitions
   will occur.

.SHORT TERM...  (Through Late Tuesday Night)

The main focus of the short term period continues to be a band of
wintry precipitation, primarily snow, across southeastern
MO/southwest IL tonight into Tues. As of mid-afternoon on Tues, a
strong (1045-mb) sfc high pressure was centered over Montana, with
a cold front pushing south across portions of Nebraska/Iowa. Into
tonight, a weak shortwave impulse will traverse the zonal flow
leading to a tightening of the baroclinic zone across N AR/S MO,
with a narrow band of frontogenetical forcing that will be
sufficient to overcome the otherwise dry low-level air. Precip is
most likely (60-80% chance) from Crawford Co. to Randolph Co. and
southward after midnight, but could begin as early as 9 or 10 pm.
Further north, up to about the I-70 corridor, some very light snow
can't be ruled out (30% chance) but that dry low level layer is
never fully eliminated on the forecast soundings.

Forecast soundings show a marginal thermodynamic profile, with an
evolution that primarily suggests snow, but at times could
introduce some sleet or transition to rain during the day. With
such a marginal profile, a wet snow (SLR closer to 6:1 or 7:1) is
expected. Forecast precip amounts did trend upward slightly
compared to the previous cycle, with the HREF mean now around
0.35-0.40" compared to 0.25" before. Snowfall amounts of 0-2" are
still most likely but there is a low chance (~20%) for amounts as
high as 3". While impacts still appear fairly minor, that slight
uptick in forecast precip amounts was enough to tip the scales
towards a Winter Weather Advisory for Iron, Madison, and Reynolds.

Into the day Tuesday, the aforementioned sfc high pressure will be
weaker, but closer to the area positioned over the north-central
Plains. That will keep persistent northeasterly winds in place,
continually pushing dry low-level air into the area. Precip
chances will generally wind down into the afternoon, and while the
forecast mentions a 30% chance precip as far north as I-70, the
forecast soundings never fully saturate. Any snow that does occur
that far north would be very light, and it's possible that there's
no snow at all outside of the band across SE MO/SW IL. Precip
chances diminish into Tues afternoon.

.LONG TERM...  (Wednesday through Next Monday)

The main change to highlight with the mid-week winter system is a
subtle northwestward trend in forecast guidance. From a large-
scale (synoptic-scale) perspective, guidance is in fairly good
agreement with this system, with ensemble clusters painting a
similar upper air, storm track, and QPF pattern. While this
agreement does increase forecast confidence, the p-type transition
zone is still expected to track across the heart of our area, and
even subtle shifts can lead to large forecast differences when
dealing with narrow bands of sleet or freezing rain.

To summarize the current forecast, there is good chance of heavy
snow (>6") along and north of a Moberly, MO, to Quincy, IL, line.
Deterministic models suggest potential for strong forcing within a
narrow deformation/f-gen zone to the northwest of the low. This
would drive the highest snow totals, perhaps upwards of 12"
(10-20% chance), but the exact placement of this heavier band is
prone to fluctuate as new guidance arrives. For areas from
Columbia, MO, to Pittsfield, IL south towards the I-44/I-70
corridors (including the STL Metro), the p-type forecast becomes
less certain with potential for narrow bands of sleet or freezing
rain to mix in, the exact placement of which remains uncertain.
These bands of icy precip will cut down on the snow totals but
still lead to hazardous travel. Even further south, south of the
I-44/I-70 corridors, snow is less likely, with icy p-types the
concern there. While the Winter Storm Watch was left unchanged
with this forecast package, would anticipate a Winter Weather
Advisory eventually being needed to the south/east due to
hazardous travel associated with the icy precip.

In terms of timing, precip could move into central MO early Wed
AM, prior to sunrise, but it appears much of the area will make
it through the Wed AM commute dry. However, precip will overspread
the area not long thereafter, with much of the aforementioned
snow/ice falling between mid-morning Wed and 6 pm Wed/00z Thurs
evening. As a result, Wed PM travel is the most likely timeframe
to be impacted by this system. (That's not to say impacts won't
extend beyond then, just that Wed PM is the most likely time for
impacts).

For Thurs into Fri, as our winter system depart, upper level
ridging and sfc high pressure build into the area, bringing a
temporary reprieve from any precipitation. Forecast temps are
seasonably cold on Thurs, with highs generally forecast to be
below freezing. By Friday, the sfc high shifts east of the area,
swinging winds to southerly and boosting highs back into the upper
30s/low 40s. Into the weekend, another long wave trough emerges
out of the desert southwest, bringing another round of
precipitation to the bi-state area Fri night into Sat (70-80%).
Much is still to be determined regarding storm track and precip
types from this system, but both rain/snow appear possible - with
snow chances increasing with northward extent.

Dry and VFR flight conditions will persist overnight while ceilings
gradually lower to low-VFR. Precipitation, becoming mainly snow,
will spread into southeastern MO and southwestern IL overnight into
Tuesday morning. Although the majority of precipitation is expected
to remain south of St. Louis metro terminals, there is a 20 to 40
percent chance of a brief period of light snow, which could result
in MVFR flight conditions. There are indications that low-VFR or
MVFR ceilings will develop and increase in coverage Tuesday evening,
with greatest confidence in MVFR ceilings at KCOU and KJEF.
