An upper-level ridge will reach the Mid-Mississippi River late
tonight, forcing a weak surface pressure ridge across the CWA
through the first half of the night with conditions efficient for
radiational cooling. However, by the second half of the night, the
pressure ridge will be departing to the east, promoting a slight
strengthening of low-level southerly flow beneath gradually
thickening upper-level clouds. Temperatures are expected to fall
into the single digits F but could flirt with 0 F in portions of
southeastern MO/southwestern IL closest to the ridge and in
sheltered locations/river valleys where BL decoupling is more likely
to hold tight.
On Thursday, the upper-level ridge will begin to give way to a
longwave trough deepening along the Front Range, briefly
strengthening low-level southwesterly flow/WAA that dislodges the
antecedent cold Arctic airmass from much most of the CWA. As a
result, the NBM temperature distribution is closing in on a 25 to 35
F diurnal (low to high) temperature rise on Thursday with locations
near and west of the Mississippi River reaching or exceeding 32 F
for the first time since late last week.

.LONG TERM... (Friday through Next Wednesday)

As the upper-level longwave trough and a lead shortwave trough
propagate eastward/northeastward into the Upper and Mid-Mississippi
River Valley late Thursday through Friday, the next opportunity for
accumulating snow will arrive to the CWA. There are still variations
in the exact track and structure of the shortwave trough,
influencing the northward extent of large-scale ascent into the CWA.
Confidence is increasing in a sharper shortwave trough that at least
promotes broad mid-level isentropic ascent with transient, weak
frontogenetical forcing northward into much of the CWA Thursday
evening into Friday morning a broad shield of light accumulating
snow resulting. Although there has been a slight upward trend in QPF
amounts, the ensemble model guidance envelope indicates that this
event will be less significant than the recent winter storm. Latest
ensemble model probabilities of total snowfall over 1" are 60 to 80
percent for the entire CWA aside from northeastern MO/west-central
IL, and snowfall over 3" are 30 to 50 percent in southeastern MO
where duration should be longest. These probabilities assume 10:1
SLRs, but forecast model soundings suggest that SLRs will slightly
above average (12 to 14:1) with a deep saturated DGZ and ascent,
albeit weak, within. Therefore, these probabilities might have a
slight low bias. Considering impacts to the Friday morning commute
and much of the area still recovering from the recent storm, a
Winter Weather Advisory has been issued along/south of I-70 from
Thursday evening through Friday afternoon. There is uncertainty in
exactly how quickly snow will end from west to east on Friday with
differences in the speed of the trough, with ensemble models split
between snow exiting by midday Friday and snow exiting by Friday
evening.
Behind the upper-level longwave trough, the upper-level wave pattern
will become increasingly progressive over the weekend. Following a
period of upper-level ridging over the Mid-Mississippi River Valley
on Saturday accompanied by dry conditions, ensemble model guidance
depict an upper-level trough, an Alberta Clipper in many members,
tracking across the Northern/Central Plains into Upper/Mid-
Mississippi River Valley around Sunday into Monday. Most ensemble
members have a track to the north of the CWA, but 40 to 50 percent
have light measurable snow across northeastern MO and west-central
IL. Since there are still significant timing differences in models,
PoPs are much lower than these probabilities. Behind the associated
cold front, another cold airmass is anticipated to invade the Mid-
Mississippi River Valley early next week; however, NBM interquartile
temperature ranges capture a large amount of uncertainty on the
potency of this airmass, spread 10 F from below average to well-
below average and similar to the temperatures we are currently
experiencing.

The concern tonight remains on the potential for fog. The best
chance remains across parts of southwest and south-central
Illinois, but some guidance extends it further west/northwest into
eastern Missouri. Still not confident enough to add into any of
the terminals, but KSUS/KCPS may have the best chance.
Outside of any fog, dry/VFR conditions will continue overnight
through the day on Thursday. Increasing clouds are forecast during
the day, with ceilings gradually lowering. Light snow is expected
to begin in central Missouri Thursday evening and gradually spread
north and east overnight. Added -SN with MVFR visibilities
starting at KJEF/KCOU around 0300 UTC Friday, with best chances at
KUIN and the metro terminals after 0600 UTC.
