.SHORT TERM... (Through Late Sunday Night)

This afternoon we've seen a battle between advancing cool, dry air
in the low levels and yet another shortwave trough pulling in
moisture aloft and one more round of steady rainfall. The result
has been a lighter rain than yesterday with even cooler
temperatures. This rain will exit to the east early this evening.
The Flood Watch will continue until this last round of rain moves
through. Although rainfall amounts are not expected to be extreme,
recent heavy rains have left soggy soils leading to efficient
runoff amid already swollen creeks, streams, and rivers. The
primary impacts from this point on are likely to be along area
streams and rivers, although localized flash flooding may still
occur.
Temperatures drop into the 30s and low 40s tonight with extensive
cloud cover preventing further cooling. The next and final wave
comes in the form of the weakening core of the western trough moving
out of the Texas Panhandle and getting absorbed into a broader Great
Lakes trough. Although this is producing snow in Texas and Oklahoma
right now, it will be weakening as it moves east into lower
elevation areas. Only about 40 to 60 percent of ensemble guidance
produces measurable precipitation across our area Sunday morning,
but of those that do many show the potential for this to fall in the
form of snowflakes. With precipitation rates very light and low
level temperatures just above freezing, we do not expect any impacts
from this beyond setting the mood for the early week temperatures.
As Sunday's trough pushes east we'll see gradual clearing into
Sunday night. Surface high pressure will be centered over Texas and
Oklahoma with a ridge axis extending into Missouri overnight. With
clearing and already cool daytime temperatures, there is the
potential for temperatures to fall below freezing Sunday night. This
potential is greater across southwest Missouri closer to the center
of the surface high, although much of the area is forecast to be
within a couple of degrees of freezing. In coordination with
neighboring WFOs, we have issued a Freeze Watch for areas most
likely to see a freeze Sunday night. Some spoilers for the freeze
include a slow departure of cloud cover as well as an uptick in wind
speeds and warm advection ahead of a cold front dropping south
through Iowa. So while the potential for a freeze is there, there
remains some uncertainty especially in northern and eastern areas.

.LONG TERM... (Monday through Next Saturday)

A trough dropping through the Great Lakes shoves a cold front
southward through our region on Monday. The front has its
greatest push southward in the eastern part of the region closer
to the trough, so the greatest push of cold air will be across
Illinois and toward the Ohio Valley. With very little moisture
around ahead of this trough, we're not expecting any
precipitation, just a reinforcing shot of cold air. Although with
sunny conditions, dry air, and deep mixing ahead of and behind the
front, most of us actually see the warmest temperatures in
several days Monday afternoon, topping off in the mid 50s to low
60s before the colder air behind the front is felt Monday night.
High pressure builds fairly quickly southward behind the departing
trough Monday night into Tuesday with its center passing near Lake
Michigan. So for Monday night we expect an even drier air mass, a
clear sky, and the lightest winds across the eastern half of our
area. NBM probability of subfreezing lows maximizes across our area
during this time period with the highest probabilities (greater than
90 percent) across northern and eastern sections and lower
probabilities across the southwest and the St Louis metro (60-70
percent). While this represents the greatest chance of a widespread
freeze, in coordination with neighboring WFOs to the east we have
opted to hold off on issuing a Freeze Watch for this time period.
Although confidence in freezing temperatures is greater, there are
still some factors which could spoil the freeze potential. There
will certainly be a warmer start Monday evening and with high
pressure tracking well to the east a return flow begins to set up
overnight with warm advection beginning in our southwest. Notably
the MAV and MET are considerably warmer than the NBM across our
southwestern forecast area (as much as 10 degrees).
While temperatures start to rebound with ridging nudging in from the
west Tuesday, guidance is showing a subtle trough rounding the top
of the ridge and moving near our region Wednesday night. The track
and timing consensus with this wave has improved in the guidance,
with the consensus taking this wave to our north across Iowa. With
Gulf moisture still largely blocked, there won't be much moisture to
work with and the best forcing will be to the north across the
southern Great Lakes. As a result, the best precipitation chances
are across our northern and eastern forecast area closer to the
track of the trough. Precipitation, if it occurs, will be light.
Troughing now looks to develop behind this wave with a surface cold
front shoving cold air southward as well. So our otherwise gradual
warm up is likely to be stunted by this. With more guidance showing
the deeper trough in its wake, our NBM forecast temperatures for
later in the week have come down a bit. We do expect a return to the
70s and even some 80s, but it may take a few more days before that
ridge spills the warmth more fully into our area.
