.SHORT TERM... (Through Late Sunday Afternoon)
Issued at 330 AM CDT Sat Apr 5 2025
The stratiform region from earlier widespread thunderstorms and
additional scattered showers and thunderstorms in its wake will
persist through the early morning along and south of I-44 (MO) and I-
70 (IL) as up to 500 J/kg of MUCAPE and an equatorward upper-level
jet entrance region remain in place. However, a period of minimal
forcing will support a period of mostly dry conditions around mid-
morning.
The next mid-level perturbation will track into the Mid-Mississippi
River Valley today within continued southwesterly flow, providing
another wave of showers and rain late this morning through
afternoon, across most of the CWA aside from northeastern MO/west-
central IL. Short-term model guidance depict 100 to 200 J/kg of
MUCAPE available initially which could result in a few weak
thunderstorms, most of this precipitation should be stratiform in
nature with instability becoming minimal which is unfavorable for
additional heavy rainfall. With this round of rain, the latest HREF
QPF interquartile range is 0.50 to 1.00" in southeastern MO/
southwestern IL within still-anomalous precipitable water and 0.25
to 0.50" closer to the I-44 (MO) and I-70 (IL) corridors. With areas
of flooding still ongoing and exceptionally low 3-hour FFG guidance
below 1", these rainfall amounts will stall recession of flooding
and possibly lead to additional areal flooding in some areas.
Therefore, the Flood Watch remains in effect through this evening.
In response to the significant rainfall over subsequent days,
moderate to major flooding is also forecast along the Meramec and
Kaskaskia River Basins. Precipitation, widespread clouds, and weak
low-level CAA at times will hold temperatures in the 40s to near 50
F.
Rain and showers will largely shift, at least temporarily, into
southeastern MO and southwestern IL through the evening, but
scattered to numerous showers are expected to gradually increase
through the night as the main upper-level trough that has aided in
the active southwesterly flow pattern finally ejects northeastward
toward the Mid-Mississippi River Valley. There is still uncertainty
how quickly this trough becomes "sheared" out by confluent flow and
its associated precipitation succumbs to dry air undercutting it,
but 50 to 70 percent of HREF membership have light showers and some
stratiform rain continuing through the morning into early afternoon
near and south of the I-70 corridor. With low-level CAA persisting,
temperatures will also become marginally supportive of light snow or
sleet mixing in, which is depicted by 50 to 60 percent of HREF
membership in central and south-central MO. However, impacts are
unlikely with only a dusting to locally 0.5" of snowfall on grassy
and elevated surfaces forecast since temperatures will be above 32 F
and rates will be light. Precipitation, clouds, and CAA will once
again keep temperatures in the 40s and 50s F on Sunday--as much as
20 F below average for early April.

.LONG TERM... (Sunday Night through Friday)

Early next week, upper-level northwesterly flow will become
established across the Mid-Mississippi River Valley as longwave
troughing is positioned over the Great Lakes and Northeast. This
pattern will lead to continued below average temperatures Monday
through early Tuesday as glancing bouts of northwesterly CAA
reinforce a seasonably cool airmass across the CWA. Exact
temperatures in this period are not completely clear with NBM
interquartile temperatures ranges 7 to 10 F, but the airmass will
support potential freezes Monday and Tuesday mornings, threatening
sensitive plants that rose from the recent onset of the growing
season. NBM probabilities of low temperatures below 32 F are 50 to
80 percent across mainly the Ozarks Monday morning and 60 to 90
percent across the entire CWA Tuesday morning, when a nearby surface
anticyclone will have a greater influence and promotion of efficient
radiational cooling.
As the longwave troughing shifts further eastward, upper-level
northwesterly flow will persist but low-level flow will become
southwesterly and enable WAA to warm temperatures to near or above
average by Wednesday. In addition, global model guidance are in
agreement that a deepening upper-level trough will navigate the
northwesterly flow and provide the next opportunity for showers and
a few thunderstorms sometime in the Wednesday through Thursday
timeframe. There are differences in the track and amplitude of the
trough, but since moisture return will not be particularly rich and
the trough will be progressive, additional heavy rainfall is not
favored.

Widespread MVFR and IFR ceilings will continue to blanket much of
the region today, with IFR ceilings becoming less common through the
morning. Another round of widespread rain will traverse the area
late this morning through afternoon with some reduction in
visibility. A stray thunderstorm cannot be ruled out at St. Louis
metro terminals, but the probability of thunder is too low to
include. Most, if not all, of the rain is expected to remain south
of KUIN. As rain/showers decrease in coverage and shift into
southeastern MO/southwestern IL or further southeastward, MVFR
ceilings will also scatter from northwest to southeast, but there is
some uncertainty how quickly this will occur, especially for St.
Louis metro terminals. Therefore, improvement to VFR flight
conditions has been delayed slightly. Yet another, lighter round of
precipitation is anticipated Sunday morning into early afternoon,
but confidence is low in any impacts. Northerly winds, gusting 18 to
25 kt at times mainly during the day today will persist.
