.SHORT TERM... (Through Late Monday Night)

Latest regional analysis shows a broad swath of broken/overcast
skies slowly departing to the east behind the exiting system. A few
showers (and even some sleet/snow) have extended over southeastern
Missouri and southwest Illinois, which corresponds to mid/upper
vorticity residing at the back side of ridging that extend northwest
from the southeastern Atlantic Coastline. Reports of mixed
precipitation have been isolated, light and impact has been
negligible with recent warmth.
The weakening trough over the south-central Plains is eventually
becomes consumed by the base of the broader longwave trough over the
northeastern CONUS as it exerts greater influence of the eastern one-
third of the U.S. Just west of the longwave pattern, a strengthening
ridge over south-central Canada conjoins with a weaker ridge over
northern Mexico. This results in a drying trend with clearing skies,
lighter surface winds and temperatures that cool efficiently.
Probabilities for sub-freezing temperatures remain highest (60-70%)
over central and southwestern Missouri, where the Freeze Warning
is in place through Monday morning. There was consideration for
covering the remainder of the area in a Frost Advisory. However,
when running the probabilities for overlap of specific parameters
(T=<32, Wind=<5mph and Sky=30%)for areas outside the Freeze
Warning, the probabilities were quite low (<10%) and spotty at
best. To prevent confusion and focus on the greater impact, the
best approach is to message the potential for near-freezing
temperatures and patchy frost tonight in these areas with the
focus being on the high probabilities Monday night/Tuesday morning
(see below).
Monday is rather uneventful with exception to a cold front that
drops in from the north and introduces some challenge to high
temperatures. Cold air advects into the northern CWA quicker, while
temperatures warm from north to south. Timing the northwesterly wind
shift (340 degrees) and spatial plotting the surface temperature
spread (5 degrees) of the interquartile data show the greatest
uncertainty lies between I-70 and Hwy 36 (MO) and I-72 (IL). Spread
decreases both north/south of this area with HREF probabilities for
afternoon temperatures below 50 degrees at 60-70% north of Hwy 36/I-
72 and greater than 55 degrees south of I-70. This lend better
confidence to shave a few degrees off high temps to the north and
retain the milder air (mid-50 to 60) to the south.
Surface ridging expands over the region behind the front Monday
night with clear skies and light wind. Efficient radiational cooling
will make this the colder night of the two. LREF probabilities for
<32 degrees not only broaden across the entire area, they also jump
dramatically with 70-100% cover the entire CWA. With exception to
Columbia, MO, probabilities for a hard freeze (<28 degrees) are
highest from Columbia, MO (60%) and points north of I-70 to the east
(60-70%), but trend downward (<50%) as you track south of I-70. The
current Freeze Watch is likely to be upgraded to a Freeze
Warning in subsequent updates, explaining the decision to not
issue to frost advisory tonight into Monday morning. The decision
to hold off, despite high confidence, prevents confusion with
tonight's Freeze Warning over central Missouri. Fortunately, the
quickest green- up has occurred in areas with <50% probabilities
for lows below 28 degrees. Where these probabilities are highest,
coordination with local growers have indicated that while green-up
has occurred, much of the planting/blooming has yet to take
place. The the greatest threat will likely be to tender
vegetation. The hope is that focusing on freezing potential
Tuesday morning will largely mitigate potential impact with
precautions that can be taken 24-48 hours in advance.

Despite a cold start in the 20s Tuesday morning, we'll be on the up
swing heading into the midweek period. Surface high pressure shifts
eastward underneath the southwestern quadrant of the upper longwave
trough over New England. Northwest flow aloft will begin to be
undercut by southeasterly surface flow as surface ridging pulls
east. It's not too out of the ordinary for early spring temperatures
to over perform with dewpoint in the 20s. However, recent green-up
begins to become more of an influence, along with southeasterly flow
climatologically less favorable for too much of a rebound.
Temperatures remain below normal with 50s through the day Tuesday.
The remainder of the week will be characterized by a return to above
normal temperatures, but before we get there, another system brings
a chance for rain late Tuesday into Wednesday. A broadening ridge
over the southwest CONUS steers upper level vorticity into the
central/northern Plains, where surface cyclogenesis is supported by
the arrival of a mid-level trough that running ahead of the broader
upper ascent. A warm front lifts into the region Tuesday night into
early Wednesday, which looks to pass through dry as it lacks
moisture.
By Wednesday, a cold front trailing the surface low provides the best
shot at additional rainfall. The challenge here will be in how all
of the pieces are timed out with the vort max lagging to the
northwest until after the surface low enters eastern Missouri. This
place the higher probabilities (50-70%) for measurable rainfall
along and east of the Mississippi River Wednesday afternoon/evening.
Mean 24-hour precipitation totals of less than 0.10" are spread west
of the Mississippi River with NBM spreads increasing east of the
river. While mean precipitation amount rise close to 0.25" toward
Vandalia, IL, the timing and resulting evolution of the system
results in spreads of up to around 0.50" around the 75th percentile.
While thunder is currently mention Wednesday afternoon, as surface
base instability is weak/zero and MUCAPE values remain low (less
than 200 J/kg). Temperatures return to near/slight above normal
territory with widespread 60s.
The cold front reinforces slightly cooler air (near normal)
southward Thursday. Beyond that, well above normal temperatures are
possible with surface high pressure and mid/upper level ridge
amplification staged just to the west. NBM spreads increase on the
uncertainty of where the upper trough will position to the east and
just how far eastward southerly flow become more of an influence.
That being said, the lower quartile depicts low to mid-70s, which
the upper quartile is well into the 80s/low-90s. The upper range may
be a big much given the pattern isn't supporting solid southwesterly
flow at this time, which is more conducive for above normal
temperatures. Spreads of 10-15 degrees also do no lend much
confidence in any on solution, other than the fact that warmer
conditions look to return for the later half of the week.
