What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this high wind warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Los Angeles, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this high wind warning went out at Jan 12, 10:56 AM PST, 4 hours 2 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jan 12, 10:56 AM PST, 4 hours 2 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
1056 AM PST Sun Jan 12 2025

.SYNOPSIS...12/223 AM.

Offshore flow will remain generally in place through Wednesday and
keep a dry air mass across the region. Extended period of critical
fire weather conditions is expected to affect the Southland
through midweek as gusty northeast winds continue today then a
stronger offshore wind event will likely develop between Monday
night and Wednesday. Cold overnight temperatures are expected in
wind protected areas the next several nights and mornings. A
cooling and moistening trend is expected for late week.

&&

.SHORT TERM (TDY-TUE)...12/831 AM.

***UPDATE***

Sunny skies covered the forecast area this morning and this will
continue through the afternoon, except for some smoky areas
around the L.A. County fires.

LAX-DAG pressure gradient was -3.3 mb at 15Z...down 0.8 mb in 24-
hours. The LAX-BFL gradient was -3.5 mb. These offshore gradients
will help to keep gusty NE winds across the usual Santa Ana wind
corridors in L.A./VTU Counties into this afternoon.

High Wind Warnings will continue until 2 PM for the San Gabriel
Mtns, Santa Susanna Mtns and western Santa Monica Mtns, where
gusts of 60 mph or more will be possible. As of 8 AM, winds were
gusting to 69 mph at the Magic Mtn Truck Trail automated station,
and 62 mph at the Chilao RAWS, both in the western San Gabriel
Mtns. Wind Advisories will continue today for the vlys of VTU
county, the Santa Clarita and western vlys of L.A. County, and
eastern Santa Monica mtns to the Malibu Coast, where wind gusts of
45 to 55 mph can be expected. Please see the latest Non-
Precipitation Weather Message (LAXNPWLOX) for further details.

Temps across the region today are expected to be near normal to a
few degrees below seasonal norms. Highs should be in the 60s to near
70 from the coast to the vlys, with low 70s possible in the warmest
inland coast and vlys of VTU/L.A. Counties.

***From Previous Discussion***

Its all about the winds...

Current Gradients are between 3 and 4 mb offshore from both the
east and north. This coupled with 40 to 50 mph of NE winds at 850
mb will bring 60 mph warning level gusts to the LA mtns, the Santa
Susana range and the western Santa Monicas. Advisory level gusts
between 35 and 55 mph will affect most of the rest of LA/VTA
counties. The SLO Mtns will also see some advisory level gusts.

Monday's grads will be similar to today's values. After that the
offshore flow will increase by about a mb each day peaking
Wednesday where there will be 4 to 6 mb of offshore flow. Upper
level support peaks on Tuesday so Tuesday's and Wednesday's wind
speeds should be pretty similar.

There will be a decent diurnal trend each afternoon and there will
be periods from mid afternoon through early evening where the
winds will not be at advisory levels. Still the advisories were
extended through Wednesday with this caveat in mind. The wind
warning in the mtns will end early this afternoon, but advisory
level gusts will continue through Monday night when warning level
gusts will again become likely and then last through Wednesday.

The wind direction will be in the classic Santa Ana NE to SW with
the main wind speed axis aligned from the mtns NE of the Santa
Clarita Vly, through the vlys either side of the VTA/LA county
line and then exiting across the western Santa Monica Mtns. The
only good news here is that the San Gabriel foothills/Eaton Fire
area will not see any strong winds from this event.

Please the product LAXNPWLOX for all of the details about the
wind speeds and locations.

It goes without saying that these winds combined with the very
low humidities and tinder dry fuels will lead to Red Flag Fire
conditions - see the discussion below for more details.

Increasing cold advection aloft the next few days will result in
some very cold overnight temperatures in wind protected areas.
Coldest areas will be across the interior, especially the Antelope
Valley and interior SLO County where lows in the mid to high
teens are possible.

Most high temps will cool each day today and Monday but then look
for a little warming both Tue and Wed. Wednesday's max temps
across the csts/vlys will end up a few degrees either side of 70.

.LONG TERM (WED-SAT)...12/324 AM.

There will be some offshore winds on Thursday morning but the
offshore flow will only be half as strong as it was on Wednesday
and there is not much of any upper support. With these two factors
think there will be some sub advisory NE winds in the morning. The
weaker offshore flow will bring 2 to 4 degrees of cooling to the
csts/vlys.

The dry upper low that pinched off earlier from a trof over NV
will begin to move to the E on Friday and will pass just under SAN
during the day. More importantly the sfc flow will turn onshore.
There will be light onshore winds. Humidities will increase. Max
temps will fall 3 to 6 degrees and will end up lower to mid 60s
across the csts/vly.

Onshore flow increases as a weak trof moves over the state on
Saturday. It is likely that this will be enough to bring marine
layer clouds back to the csts and lower vlys in the morning. It
will be a rather cool day with max temps coming in a degree or two
either side of 60 or 8 to 12 degrees blo normal.
