  Panhandle/Crescent Lake NWR and Fire Weather Zone 206

* TIMING...Noon through 9 PM CDT Thursday.

* WINDS...For the rest of today, west 15 to 25 mph with gusts up
  to 40 mph. For Friday, northwest 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to

.KEY MESSAGES...

- Winds decrease quickly tonight as the storm system moves off
  to the east of the area.

- Attention then turns to fire weather. Will be issuing a Fire
  Weather Watch for Wednesday across parts of the area.

- Additional fire weather concerns will continue into the
  weekend.

- Several weak waves and associated Pacific cold fronts will
  cross the area the weekend into early next week. Little
  precipitation is expected with these systems/fronts. &&

.SHORT TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Issued at 239 PM CDT Wed Mar 19 2025

Storm system will move east of the area tonight and the strong north
winds will quickly diminish after sunset. Skies will quickly clear
from the northwest, and as winds become light northwest,
temperatures will drop into the upper teens and lower 20s overnight.

Attention then turns fire weather concerns both Thursday and Friday.
Upper level ridging aloft will translate eastward across the area
during the day Thursday. This will be ahead of a shortwave digging
into the northern Rockies area. A surface low will deepen ahead of
the shortwave across western South Dakota. A leeward surface trough
will extend south of the low across the Panhandle into eastern
Colorado. West to southwest low-level flow will become gusty across
the area ahead of the surface trough and southeast of the surface
low. Very dry air will mix eastward off the higher terrain to the
west and have posted a Fire Weather Watch for a large part of
western and north central Nebraska.

Winds will decrease some Thursday night...but still remain in the 10-
20 mph range as they switch to the northwest as the surface trough
advances eastward across the area. Poor humidity recovery is
expected...with humidity values only recovering to around 55%.

As the shortwave advances from the northern Rockies and crosses the
northern plains Friday, winds will markedly increase from the
northwest. Gusts over 40 mph are likely with another day of low
humidity. Fore weather headlines will likely again be needed
Friday.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Issued at 239 PM CDT Wed Mar 19 2025

Little changes for the weekend. Gusty winds look to continue both
Saturday and Sunday. Another shortwave crosses the area with the
passage of a Pacific cold front. Saturday winds will be from the
west to southwest as surface low pressure once again deepens across
western South Dakota. Saturday night into Sunday the low will
migrate across South Dakota with the passage of the Pacific cold
front. Winds become northwest and will become quite strong Sunday in
the wake of the cold front. Both days will see low humidity values
and near-critical or critical fire weather conditions appear likely
both days. The fire weather concern may ease just a bit Monday into
Tuesday, but still appears that at least elevated conditions will
occur. Very little in the way of precipitation chances. The only
chance at this point is a slight chance for showers Saturday night
with the passage of the Pacific cold front.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday.

A fire weather watch is in effect for a large portion of western and
north central Nebraska Thursday afternoon through mid evening.
Critical fire weather conditions are possible. Wind gusts may reach
35 MPH with minimum relative humidity of 10 to 20 percent.

Near critical to critical fire weather conditions are possible
during
the afternoon hours Friday through Sunday due to a combination of
above average temperatures, low humidity, and gusty winds.
