.SHORT TERM...(Today through Tuesday)
Issued at 505 AM EST MON MAR 3 2025

09Z sfc analysis shows high pressure now moving off to the east of
Kentucky. This is still near enough to keep the winds light, skies
mostly clear, and dewpoints quite dry. These conditions allowed
for good radiational cooling and is resulting in decent ridge to
valley temperatures splits early this morning. Specifically,
readings currently range from the mid teens in many of the
sheltered hollers to the mid 20s on the hill tops and over the
more open terrain. Meanwhile, dewpoints are holding in the teens,
most places.

The models, and their individual ensemble suites, are still in
great agreement aloft through the short term portion of the
forecast. They all depict slowing and flattening northwest mid
level flow through Kentucky today as a mini trough dampens out
over the Deep South. This all occurs downstream of a consolidating
and very strong closed low trough over the Four Corners Region. As
this western trough further deepens and rides east toward the
Plains tonight, the mid level flow over our state will turn more
southwesterly with an approach of more energy streaming out of
that main trough. 5h heights will peak over eastern Kentucky on
Tuesday as the potent trough digs through the Southern Plains. On
account of this features' approach, the southwest flow, now deep
layer, will tighten up into the evening over our area with just
some weak packets of energy affecting the JKL CWA until just
after 00Z Wednesday. The model spread aloft continues to be very
small still supporting using the NBM as the starting point for the
forecast grids, though did make some adjustments to incorporate
more terrain distinction in the temperatures early this morning
and again extensively tonight.

Sensible weather features a chilly start to the day - especially
in the sheltered valleys but ample sunshine initially and light
winds becoming more southerly will make for a much warmer day.
However, only a slight uptick in moisture will mean another
afternoon of very low relative humidity with a potential for
erratic fire behavior should any develop. Winds will start to pick
up tonight as the large sfc low strengthens to the southwest and
starts to encroach on the state. These winds, and more high and
mid clouds over our area, will make for milder temperatures into
Tuesday morning, though some terrain differences will continue to
be a factor. The sfc low gets closer on Tuesday with strengthening
southerly, but also downslope, winds leading to continued drying
for a time into the afternoon. Have kept the PoPs at 10 percent or
less in this environment with RH probably falling to near 25
percent for a good portion of southeastern Kentucky. This will
combine with the winds for near critical, or worse, fire weather
conditions. A Red Flag Warning may be warranted for Tuesday
afternoon - should this forecast hold. This has been highlighted
in the Fire Weather narrative and tabular forecast products,
including a slate of spots going out later this shift. The better
slug of moisture and initial shower and storm chances then roll
into eastern Kentucky later that evening ending the fire weather
concerns.

The changes to the NBM starting point again consisted primarily
of adjusting temperatures early this morning and tonight for more
terrain details. Did also lower dewpoints in the afternoon today
and Tuesday due to enhanced mixing off the sfc. As for PoPs, kept
them near 10 percent or lower through the period - in line with
most of the guidance - including the latest from the CAMs.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)
Issued at 256 PM EST MON MAR 3 2025

The period begins Wednesday morning with an occluded front with
some type of line of showers and/or thunderstorms over far
eastern/southeastern Kentucky moving quickly east out of the area.
Winds may lighten behind this frontal passage for a few hours,
but are expected to increase once again in association with a
sting jet-like feature moving across the Bluegrass State. Models
suggest the Bluegrass region area will see the strongest winds
late morning into the afternoon, which could be sustained as high
as 25 to 30 mph with gusts as high as 45 mph, but all of eastern
Kentucky will see gusty winds through the day. As it is still a
little to early to pull the trigger on a Wind Advisory for this
period, will wait to extend/expand the Wind Advisory north and
east, but we will continue to message increasing confidence for
gusty winds during the day Wednesday across eastern Kentucky.

Cold air spills into the area with crashing low-level partial
thicknesses. Any rain showers by this time will change over to snow
showers, with snow showers becoming increasingly limited to far
eastern and southeastern Kentucky progressing through the morning
and afternoon hours Thursday. Given warm antecedent temperatures
combined with breezy conditions, expect temperatures to be too
marginal for any significant accumulations, with any snow
accumulations limited to grassy and elevated surfaces. Increasingly
drier air moves into the region Thursday afternoon, with some modest
recovery in temperatures back into the lower to mid 40s before
falling again Thursday night.

Flow quickly returns zonal Friday into Friday night as a weak
disturbance quickly crosses the region. Will thus have low-end PoPs
(around 10 to 20 percent) Friday afternoon increasing to 50 to
70 percent into the evening and overnight.

Uncertainty for the remainder of the long-term period (Saturday
through Sunday night) increases significantly as models have
struggled with how they handle (both timing and strength) the
ejection of an upper trough/disturbance out of the Southwest U.S.
that is poised to move across the central and/or southern parts of
the country. Will follow the NBM for this forecast package, which
blends a significant range of solutions from another strong cyclone
moving across the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys bringing widespread
precipitation and likely some winds, to another set of solutions
which show the area mostly missing out on any significant
precipitation as the disturbance moves south of the area.

High pressure crossing the area will mean that VFR conditions and
light winds will prevail through the period. Look for a few
passing high clouds, at times, area-wide - also few mid-level
cloud patches could sneak into the I-64 corridor during the
daytime hours later today. Late tonight, winds will start to pick
up from the south just off the surface likely yielding some LLWS
at 35 kts, for a time.

exceeding 40 mph during two timeframes. The first would be along and
in advance of a strong line of showers expected to cross the area on
Tuesday night. Another peak in wind gusts is expected from late
Wednesday morning into Wednesday afternoon. The highest potential
for wind gusts of 40 to mph or higher exists over southeastern
Kentucky near and just downwind of the high terrain along the
Virginia border.

There is a slight chance of thunderstorms Tuesday night and
