.KEY MESSAGES...

- Windy late Tuesday into Wednesday.

- Dry and increasingly breezy conditions on Tuesday afternoon into
  Tuesday evening will result in near critical fire weather
  conditions.

- A period of showers will occur near and in advance of a cold
  front Tuesday night. Isolated thunderstorms are also possible.

- Additional showers should develop Wednesday, and possibly mix
  with or change to snow for Wednesday night and Thursday, with
  minor accumulations possible.

- Milder temperatures return to finish the week, along with a
  likelihood of rain for most of the area.

.UPDATE...
Issued at 1100 PM EST MON MAR 3 2025

Temperatures are dropping a bit quicker than expected in the
valleys late this evening but further falls should be tempered
somewhat as clouds increase through the remainder of the night.
The overnight minimum temperatures have been nudged a degree or
two lower in many valley locales. Anticipate widespread readings
of 25 to 30F in sheltered valleys and mainly in the 30s
elsewhere.

UPDATE Issued at 715 PM EST MON MAR 3 2025

Forecast is largely on track through the overnight other than
some minor refinements to bring the hourly forecast in line with
recent observations. Also added a small chance of thunder to the
forecast/HWO for Tuesday night's frontal passage as suggested by
the 12z HREF and 15z SREF and SPC's convective weather outlook. An
isolated convectively induced damaging wind gust is also
possible, best chance in the vicinity of Lake Cumberland.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Tuesday night)
Issued at 530 PM EST MON MAR 3 2025

A strong upper level low at the heart of a deep trough was over
the Intermountain West late today. It is supporting an intense
combination lee and synoptic scale low over eastern CO. Meanwhile,
downstream upper level ridging is approaching us from the west,
while surface high pressure departs of the East Coast. The ridge
and high are still supplying us with very dry air with tranquil
weather. However, the western system will move steadily east with
time and result in big changes in the short term period.

The storm system will continue to strengthen a become anomalously
intense and large by the time it reaches the Midwest on Tuesday
night. The pressure gradient will bring us increasing winds on
Tuesday. The big question lies in the potential for advisory level
winds. The strongest low level wind fields don't arrive here until
Tuesday evening. However, models suggest that there will be
enough increase during the period of good low level diurnal mixing
late in the day to achieve advisory level gusts of 40+ MPH in our
southwest counties. Loss of heating and lessening low level lapse
rates will inhibit deep mixing by later in the evening. At this
time, have issued an initial Wind Advisory for our southwest
counties for late afternoon and evening Tuesday. It is possible it
will need to be extended temporally and/or spatially depending on
what later model runs show. Isolated advisory level winds may
also occur across the highest peaks near the VA border.

Fire weather is another concern on Tuesday. Dew points will
finally begin to climb. The concern is how fast they are able to
climb as stronger winds arrive. The latest data suggests that
places most likely to have critical winds will have the fastest
climbing dew points, and places holding onto critically low RH in
the afternoon will see winds increase later. That being the case,
an overlap of both critically low RH and critically strong winds
is not currently forecast. However, this will also need to be
watched for changes.

The system's occluded front will arrive on Tuesday night and will
bring a period of showers. Latest model runs are not supportive
of instability for thunder. The showers should be about to exit to
the east early Wednesday morning, with the front to follow.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)
Issued at 256 PM EST MON MAR 3 2025

The period begins Wednesday morning with an occluded front with
some type of line of showers and/or thunderstorms over far
eastern/southeastern Kentucky moving quickly east out of the area.
Winds may lighten behind this frontal passage for a few hours,
but are expected to increase once again in association with a
sting jet-like feature moving across the Bluegrass State. Models
suggest the Bluegrass region area will see the strongest winds
late morning into the afternoon, which could be sustained as high
as 25 to 30 mph with gusts as high as 45 mph, but all of eastern
Kentucky will see gusty winds through the day. As it is still a
little to early to pull the trigger on a Wind Advisory for this
period, will wait to extend/expand the Wind Advisory north and
east, but we will continue to message increasing confidence for
gusty winds during the day Wednesday across eastern Kentucky.

Cold air spills into the area with crashing low-level partial
thicknesses. Any rain showers by this time will change over to snow
showers, with snow showers becoming increasingly limited to far
eastern and southeastern Kentucky progressing through the morning
and afternoon hours Thursday. Given warm antecedent temperatures
combined with breezy conditions, expect temperatures to be too
marginal for any significant accumulations, with any snow
accumulations limited to grassy and elevated surfaces. Increasingly
drier air moves into the region Thursday afternoon, with some modest
recovery in temperatures back into the lower to mid 40s before
falling again Thursday night.

Flow quickly returns zonal Friday into Friday night as a weak
disturbance quickly crosses the region. Will thus have low-end PoPs
(around 10 to 20 percent) Friday afternoon increasing to 50 to
70 percent into the evening and overnight.

Uncertainty for the remainder of the long-term period (Saturday
through Sunday night) increases significantly as models have
struggled with how they handle (both timing and strength) the
ejection of an upper trough/disturbance out of the Southwest U.S.
that is poised to move across the central and/or southern parts of
the country. Will follow the NBM for this forecast package, which
blends a significant range of solutions from another strong cyclone
moving across the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys bringing widespread
precipitation and likely some winds, to another set of solutions
which show the area mostly missing out on any significant
precipitation as the disturbance moves south of the area.

A more minor issue is low temperatures tonight. Initially clear
skies and light winds will allow for surface cooling, especially
in valleys. However, this is not likely to be maintained through
the night, particularly in our western counties, as high clouds
and winds increase. The result is a tricky temperature forecast
with ridge/valley differences and rising temps before dawn in many
if not most places.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Tuesday night)
ISSUED AT 110 AM EST TUE MAR 4 2025

VFR conditions are forecast through at least 03Z in all areas,
with MVFR possible near Lake Cumberland late. Generally southeast
to south winds are expected through 15Z at 5 to 10KT or less with
gusts as high as 15KT. Thereafter, sustained winds will increase
to the 8 to 17KT range with gusts increasing into the 20 to 30KT
if not stronger by 21Z, especially near the TN border and
near/west of I-75. Some gusts may reach around 40KT near Lake
Cumberland at times during the last 9 hours of the period. Showers
should arrive near and west of I 75 late and isolated
thunderstorms will be possible. Outside of showers and any
thunderstorms, LLWS will be a threat.

Dry air with minimum relative humidity around 25% is expected on

are expected after relative humidity begins to climb toward evening.
Many places may have wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph Tuesday night.
Localized stronger gusts of 40 to 50 mph may occur along the tallest
ridges near the Virginia border. An isolated strong to severe
thunderstorm is possible late Tuesday night with strong to damaging
wind gusts the primary threat. After a lull early Wednesday morning,
strong wind gusts could exceed 40 mph area-wide during the day on
Wednesday.
