Surface high pressure over the Midwest will provide quiet weather conditions. The pressure gradients decreasing as high pressure builds will also lead to lighter winds as through the night with any gusts wrapping up by this evening. Cloud cover will continue to gradually decrease through the night as dry air continues to advect into the area. The combination of clearing skies and winds dropping closer to calm will allow for efficient radiational cooling with lows falling into the teens. A gentle NW breeze on top of the cold temperatures could result in single digit sub-zero wind chills for northern counties. Saturday. Cloud cover will gradually begin to increase late in the day ahead of the winter storm, but otherwise quiet conditions are expected. && .LONG TERM (Saturday night through Friday)... Issued at 302 PM EST Fri Jan 3 2025 OVERVIEW - The primary concerns for the long term forecast are twofold. 1) WINTER STORM WATCH for a winter storm expected Sunday into Monday, with potential for significant to major impacts, in the form of heavy snow, sleet/ice accumulations, and gusty winds/blowing and drifting. 2) Bitterly cold conditions arriving in the wake of this storm, likely persisting well into the week 2 period before improvement. WINTER STORM SUNDAY INTO MONDAY - As has been discussed previously, the Ohio Valley has an impending winter storm of which will approach central Indiana Sunday morning, with impacts through most of Monday. This particular set-up is not typical for a large impactful winter system, and thus is creating many challenges in regards to the forecast. Most of the abnormalities lie in the presence of a broad deep trough over the eastern portions of Canada and New England. This trough is working two fold, both limiting northeastward progression of the impending low, and keeping antecedent conditions well below freezing. Regardless, a trough will push eastward this weekend with a resulting low developing generally over the Ozarks/Mid-Mississippi Valley. Due to this Canadian trough, typical phasing of the low will be shunted, keeping progression mostly E to ESE. There is still some discrepancy on low track with ensemble members varying from central KY to central TN as of the 12Z suite. The central TN solutions have become slightly more abundant in the latest runs, leading to a southward trend in QPF and resulting impacts. Timing has been a bit more consistent in the latest suite of model guidance with precipitation onset occurring sometime on Sunday morning into the early afternoon for central Indiana. Precipitation type issues is likely to occur Sunday morning through the afternoon as a 50-70kt 700-850mb jet will push much warmer air into central Indiana above a well below freezing near surface. The current though is for much greater coverage of sleet vs freezing rain for central Indiana due to the entire 0-3km layer remaining below freezing. With that said, there is some uncertainty due to potential for the warm nose to be warmer than 3C for portions of southern central Indiana. If this does occur, rain will likely have a hard time re-freezing before reaching the surface resulting in more widespread FZRA. Along and north of I-70, the warm nose should remain below freezing with any precipitation falling rimed, dense snow through Sunday afternoon. Dynamic cooling as the CCB strengthens will likely push mixed precipitation further into southern IN and KY Sunday evening through Sunday night. It is at this time that greatest snowfall rates are most likely for central Indiana with 700-500mb vertical lift increasing and co-located inside the DGZ. There is also some potential for deformation banding to begin late Sunday night into Monday morning, but will greatly depend on if the the WCB is able to overcome the Canadian trough and develop a TROWAL. This is being analyzed in the GFS and NAM deterministic solutions. Given the high SLRs with this portion of the storm, a wide range in 6hour snowfall amounts is possible between 06Z and 12Z. Snow will begin to taper off as the system departs to the east, dry advection aloft begins, and forcing quickly weakens during the day on Monday, but light accumulations may continue through Monday afternoon. ******************************************************************* Summary of Winter Storm: Given the strong forcing, plentiful moisture, and long duration of the event due to the orientation and motion of the primary precipitation band with the system, probabilities are still high for warning criteria of 5 inches, especially for areas along and south of I70. Given the slight southward shift, there is now much more uncertainty for reaching 5+ inches north of I-70, but these areas will remain in a Watch for now with some potential for these trends to reverse. Greatest snowfall amounts are likely to remain south of the I-70 corridor; current forecast is for snowfall totals as high as 11 inches. Areas that see any mixing of sleet or freezing rain will likely see much less snowfall totals on Sunday, however impacts could still be just as bad due to ice accretion. Winds will also be a concern, particularly Sunday night into Monday, with blowing and drifting likely becoming at least a moderate concern in that time frame, with frequent gusts in the 30-35 MPH range and locally higher gusts. A Winter Storm Watch remains posted for all of Central Indiana from Sunday morning through Monday evening, no changes have been made to the timing of the watch with this forecast issuance. ******************************************************************** BITTER COLD - Guidance strongly suggests the arrival and fairly lengthy persistence of a potent Arctic airmass in the wake of the winter storm. Well below normal temperatures are expected from Tuesday - Wednesday and into the week 2 period, Depending on where the snowpack forms, there is strong potential for subzero low temperatures. Kept both highs and lows below guidance for the rest of the week, nudging temperatures toward the NBM10-25th percentile given the fact that there will be a healthy snowpack. MISCELLANEOUS - Toward the middle of next week and beyond, guidance not only strongly suggests the aforementioned persistence of a potent Arctic airmass, but also the passage of one or more upper level shortwave troughs within the much larger longwave trough/upper low over the eastern Canadian provinces and the northeastern CONUS. While moisture is very often difficult to come by for these waves, cyclonic flow in Arctic airmasses is notorious for producing persistent flurries or light snow showers, and depending upon the orientation of the flow, may allow somewhat more substantial lake enhanced activity to make it down into portions of central Indiana at times. While these more minor snows are far less predictable, particularly several days or more in advance, we are likely to see at least a few periods of light snow across some portions of central Indiana at times toward the end of the forecast period and beyond, despite the official forecast remaining dry for now. && .AVIATION (06Z TAF Issuance)...
