.SHORT TERM (This evening through Sunday)...
Issued at 300 PM EDT Sat Apr 5 2025

Rainfall continues over a majority of Central Indiana this evening
and tonight as additional waves of precipitation push into the
region.

The quasi-stationary boundary over the state over the past several
days has moved southward toward the Ohio River this afternoon
resulting in cold air advection and falling temperatures in the 40s.
Despite the boundary now to the south, additional waves of energy
riding along it and a strong mid level jet pumping in moisture
northward will keep the chances for rain around through tomorrow.
Rainfall rates tonight are not expected to be as heavy as the past
several days; however with grounds already saturated and rivers
actively flooding, even lighter rain is going to cause issues.

Latest satellite and radar imagery clear shows the next round of
light to moderate rain pushing in from the southwest associated with
an approaching mid level jet streak. IND ACARs soundings indicates
very little instability above a low level inversion, which should
keep the lightning threat fairly low for most of the region. Further
south in South Central Indiana, just enough MUCAPE may be present to
support lightning and convective showers this evening, so have
included this in the forecast. Better moisture advection northward
and instability will likely lead to higher rainfall amounts across
the south upwards of 1-2 inches through tomorrow morning, with
lesser amounts under an inch from the I-70 corridor northward. A
sharp QPF gradient extends from Lafayette to Muncie and points
northward where under a quarter inch of additional rainfall is
expected.

Additional waves of energy ride along the front going into tomorrow;
however forecast soundings and BUFKIT cross sections indicate low
level dry air advection working to dry out the lowest 5 kft agl.
This will likely result in more sporadic showers and much lighter
rates for most of the area. Continued cold air advection on the
north side of the front and cloudy skies will really limit boundary
layer heating as well with temperatures struggling to get out of the
low to mid 40s. Some guidance is showing the possibility for a few
flakes mixing in by tomorrow afternoon; however with the DGZ up
around 15 kft agl, marginal temperature profiles, and drying low
levels, do not thinking any precip mixing will be significant. Not
out of the question to see a few flurries or ice pellets mixed in,
but not expecting this to be widespread.

The Flood Watch and Flood Warnings continue across most of Central
Indiana into tonight and tomorrow morning. Currently do not plan on
extending the flood watch as rainfall rates become very light
tomorrow. Rivers will likely remain elevated above flood stage for
the next week or two and will issue river flood products
accordingly.

Tomorrow will be much colder than it has been lately as a colder
pattern sets up over the next several days. Northerly winds increase
tonight as shallow low level mixing and surface pressure gradient
increases. Wind gusts of 20-25 mph are possible this evening into
tomorrow, with feels like temperatures remaining in the 30s.

.LONG TERM (Sunday night through Saturday)...
Issued at 300 PM EDT Sat Apr 5 2025

A large-scale pattern change is anticipated in the long term. The
slow-moving trough that has been bringing us round after round of
rainfall finally slides eastward Sunday night. A deep trough then
slides southward out of Canada on Monday bringing colder air with
it. In fact, a secondary surface cold front expected during the
afternoon hours on Monday may be quite sharp. Some higher-resolution
models show temperatures dropping into the 30s/40s in the hour or so
after FROPA. Ahead of the front, highs may briefly climb into the
lower 50s. Moisture is fairly limited ahead of the front so
widespread precipitation is not expected. However, enough low-level
instability may be realized to allow for some showers which may mix
with graupel at times. Winds may be gusty behind the front as well,
perhaps up to 30-35mph.

Surface high pressure quickly builds in Monday evening, with
diminishing winds and clearing skies. The center of the high doesn't
arrive until Tuesday, however, and there may be enough cyclonic flow
regionally to promote lingering stratocumulus through the night and
into Tuesday morning. Models tends to be a bit too optimistic with
stratocu in these scenarios by clearing things up too quickly. We
will retain some cloud cover in the forecast, especially northeast
of Indianapolis, for now. Questions regarding cloud cover translate
into questions regarding low temperatures, since lows will partly
depend on the radiative component in addition to the advective.
Should skies end up clearer, then we can expect values as low as the
low 20s. Conversely, cloud cover may keep lows closer to 30.
Regardless, sub-freezing temperatures are expected with widespread
frost and hard freeze conditions.

Sub-freezing lows are possible again Tuesday night, but by 00z that
evening the core of the upper trough will be exiting to the east.
Modest warm air advection begins and continues into the night as
winds turn westerly. Lows in the 20s are possible, especially east
of I-65. There remains some differences within guidance with how
fast the surface high departs. Slower departure favors colder temps
as ideal radiative cooling conditions linger into the night.

Our next chance of precipitation arrive on Wednesday evening or
early Thursday as a moisture-starved system zips by to our north.
Guidance shows some weak convective instability, which combined with
frontal forcing could lead to scattered showers and perhaps a
thunderstorm. Additionally, some breezy southwesterly winds are
possible immediately ahead of the system and its attendant cold
front Wednesday afternoon. Cold advection returns after Thursday as
northwesterly flow aloft and east coast troughing take hold.
Additional overnights with frost potential are possible towards the
end of the week and into next weekend.

Impacts:

- Mainly MVFR/IFR flight conditions today with brief LIFR possible

- Showers persisting into tonight, becoming more sporadic after 03z

Discussion:

Satellite and radar imagery continue to show numerous waves of rain
along a boundary pushing into Central Indiana resulting in
widespread MVFR/IFR cigs and vis. These conditions will persist
through at least 03z, then largely MVFR conditions overnight into
tomorrow. Confidence is lower going into Sunday if cigs will rise to
low VFR levels as additional showers will still be around. Drier air
coming in from the north should work to help lift cloud bases during
the day. For now kept conditions MVFR, but will add VFR cigs as
confidence increases when this could happen. Highest confidence in
VFR conditions developing is at KLAF, further away from the front
and areas of rain than the rest of the sites. KBMG likely will
remain under MVFR longer than KIND and KHUF through tomorrow.

Observations indicate that the boundary has passed south of all TAF
sites, switching winds to the NNW this afternoon. A very low
inversion has prevented mixing down of higher gusts as of 18z, but
as colder and slightly drier air advects in this evening, expect
this inversion to rise enough to allow for boundary layer mixing to
occur. Added gusts of 20-25 kts to all sites this evening into
tomorrow. Wind direction will slowly shift from 330-360 deg this
evening to 010-040 deg tomorrow.
