Indiana...
East Fork White River near Rivervale.
White River at Hazleton.
...The Flood Warning continues for the following rivers in Indiana...
White River at Petersburg.
.Recent rainfall coupled with snow melt has led to a rise along
southern Indiana rivers. Minor flooding, mainly affecting lowlands,
is expected along the lower White and East Fork White Rivers through
as late as the middle of next week.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.
Motorists should not attempt to drive around barricades or drive
cars through flooded areas.
Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.
Flooding is occurring or is imminent. Most flood related deaths
occur in automobiles. Do not attempt to cross water covered bridges,
dips, or low water crossings. Never try to cross a flowing stream,
even a small one, on foot. To escape rising water find another route
over higher ground.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Indianapolis IN 1156 AM EST Sun Feb 16 2025 .KEY MESSAGES... - Winter Weather Advisory for most of central Indiana through early this afternoon - Wind gusts peaking at 35 to 40 mph at times today with wind chills falling below zero tonight - Another round of snow likely Tuesday night into Wednesday with greatest impacts across southern Indiana - Temperatures remain well below normal through the week with multiple mornings of sub-zero wind chills && .FORECAST UPDATE... Issued at 1000 AM EST Sun Feb 16 2025 Deformation band snow has exited central Indiana to the east at this time. However, radar and surface observations are showing an expanding area of light snow/snow showers across central Illinois and northwest Indiana. This snow is being caused from additional forcing with an upper jet and upper trough moving east into the area. Upped PoPs in the northern half of central Indiana to account for this area of snow as it moves east into the afternoon. If visibility continues to drop within this area of snow, may have to up PoPs into likely or higher category for larger portions of central Indiana later this morning. Additional accumulations would be less than an inch. Steepening lapse rates this afternoon could create additional snow showers. Roads are slick/snow covered across much of the area from the earlier snow along with some blowing snow as winds continue to gust over 30 mph. Thus, even though the heavier snow has ended, will continue the Winter Weather Advisory as is for the lingering impacts. Will continue to monitor and update as needed. Temperatures won't change much today with cold advection continuing. && .SHORT TERM (Today and Tonight)... Issued at 245 AM EST Sun Feb 16 2025 The transition back to winter is currently ongoing early this morning as the broad shield of moderate to heavy rainfall pivots east in tandem with the surface low moving into south central Kentucky. The heaviest rain is already east of our far southeast counties but not before depositing up to 2.25 inches rain which has led to some small stream flooding across south central Indiana. Precipitation has changed to snow or a mix of rain and snow over the northwest half of the forecast area as of 07Z with precipitation coverage increasing across eastern Missouri and the southern half of Illinois in response to the trailing upper level wave. Temperatures were in the low and mid 30s early this morning. The broader flood threat from the earlier rains is ending and will be cancelling the flood watch across far southern portions of central Indiana. Now the focus shifts to a quick and potentially impactful back end thump of snow as the storm system departs. Cyclonic flow aloft will maintain scattered wind whipped snow showers and flurries for much of the day. Strong high pressure arrives tonight along with a renewed surge of bitterly cold Arctic air that will persist across the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley for much of the upcoming week. Early This Morning through Midday As mentioned above...precipitation has rapidly expanded from southeast Missouri northeast into the Wabash Valley since 05Z with the bulk of it now falling as snow based on observations. Expect this area of snow to continue its eastward trek over the next few hours as the associated upper wave strengthens and the aforementioned surface low deepens on its track into the upper Ohio Valley by daybreak. A mid level deformation band will accompany the upper trough axis and may briefly intensify as it moves across the forecast area through the first half of the morning. This will provide the forcing for a quick 1 to 3 hour thump of snow over the next several hours. Slightly drier air present above the boundary layer is likely to diminish as the forcing aloft interacts with the deeper moisture associated with the ongoing storm system over the region. This will be key as it will allow for deeper moisture to expand into the dendritic growth zone for the coinciding timeframe when the mid level deformation axis passes. Subpar snow ratios currently will quickly improve as colder air advects into the region through daybreak. Expect 1 to 2 inches of snow over much of the eastern half of the forecast area by late morning with locally higher amounts focused especially northeast of the Indy metro. The potential for enhanced snowfall rates for a couple hours could quickly overwhelm roads with surface temps falling into the upper 20s and lower 30s. In addition...the arrival of northwest winds gusting as high as 30-35 mph as the surface pressure gradient tightens will produce blowing snow and reduced visibilities where rates are higher. All of the thoughts above support an expansion of the Winter Weather Advisory south through the Indy metro and over the eastern two thirds of central Indiana through midday. This Afternoon and Tonight The bulk of the steadier snowfall will be east of the forecast area by midday but scattered snow showers will persist into the afternoon with cyclonic flow aloft and a secondary weaker upper level wave traversing through the region. There is potential for additional localized light accumulations of a couple tenths with the afternoon snow showers focused primarily across the northeast half of the forecast area. Northwest winds will continue to gust as cold advection strengthens over the area with snow showers diminishing to flurries by early evening before ending. The stratus will remain as an inversion lingers within the boundary layer. Eventually as the strong high pressure builds into the region overnight...low clouds will slowly mix as subsidence works down into the lower levels. Peak gusts will drop back tonight as the pressure gradient begins to relax...but expect brisk winds to persist into Monday. Temps...nudged highs down today from the model blend as the combination of clouds and increasing cold advection will keep temps in the upper 20s and lower 30s. The arrival of the surface high tonight serves as the first piece of a bitterly cold Arctic air that will reload throughout the upcoming week. Lows tonight will fall into the single digits north of I-70 with teens further south. Even if skies clear late...the steady winds should keep temperatures from bottoming out with a thin fresh snow cover. Subfreezing wind chills are expected overnight. && .LONG TERM (Monday through Saturday)... Issued at 245 AM EST Sun Feb 16 2025 Monday Through Wednesday. The main weather focus for next week will be the much colder than normal temperatures Monday through Thursday as arctic air continues to move into the Ohio Valley in the aftermath of the weekend weather system. There may be a few lingering flurries Monday morning, but otherwise expecting dry weather with only minimal chances for light snow across southwestern Indiana as a weak low pressure gradually dissipates as it moves into Illinois. Wind chills Monday night will drop into the negatives north of I-70, but should remain high enough to avoid the need for a Cold Weather Advisory. The main factor helping to limit the extent and severity of this cold blast will be residual mid and upper level clouds which will help to insulate temperatures. Surface winds are also expected to remain in the 5-10 mph range which further limits the effectiveness of radiational cooling, but does lower the wind chills. There is increasing confidence in the next shot of snow moving in Tuesday night as a broad upper level trough interacts with Gulf air surging northward to bring a period of snow to much of the Mid- Mississippi Valley. Locally, snow chances begin to ramp up late Tuesday night with the timeframe of heaviest snow currently looking to be Wednesday morning. While exact details remain uncertain this far out, there is pretty good agreement in the ensembles for accumulating snow as far north as Indianapolis with the potential of 3+ inches towards Vincennes. Will continue to monitor forecast trends as the northern edge of the snow shield often underperforms in these more synoptically driven patterns. Thursday Through Saturday. Another surge of colder air will move in behind the exiting Wednesday system with a secondary Canadian low moving in from the northwest which will bring periods of light snow/flurries along with the coldest temperatures of the week. Highs Thursday will likely only rise into the teens with another night of single digits expected Thursday night into Friday along with wind chills approaching -10. Temperatures will begin to slightly warm going into the weekend but still will remain below normal with the pattern favoring continued northwesterly flow into next week which will keep temperatures below to much below normal. && .AVIATION (18Z TAF Issuance)... Issued at 1155 AM EST Sun Feb 16 2025 Impacts: - Predominant MVFR conditions through at least the first half of the period - Scattered snow showers this afternoon - Northwest wind gusts peaking at around 30kt into this evening Discussion: Scattered snow showers, with mainly MVFR visibility, will continue this afternoon. Cannot rule out brief IFR in a heavier snow shower. Otherwise, widespread MVFR ceilings will persist across the sites through at least 06Z and possible until 12Z. Some VFR conditions should then return, but low VFR ceilings may return by mid-morning. Gusty northwest winds will persist into early evening before relaxing. && .IND WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
