.Rainfall amounts of 1.5 to over 2 inches across parts of eastern 
and southern Indiana over the weekend are producing minor flooding 
in spots in the East Fork White basin and will bring flooding to 
lower portions of the White River in the next day or so. The crest 
on the East Fork should reach Seymour Tuesday night and work 
downstream from there, while the lower end of the White should crest 
by the end of the week. Rainfall expected Wednesday through 
Wednesday night could lengthen the flooding.

.SHORT TERM (Today and tonight)...

Synopsis and remainder of the Overnight...

H20 vapor imagery is showing a broad upper trough from the Missouri
Valley into northern Louisiana early this overnight while radar
reflectivity is showing one widespread area of moderate rain lifting
northeastward into far southeastern Indiana and Ohio with some
banding occurring from around Daviess county into Marion county and
more banding over the upper Wabash Valley. The departing area of
rain is located closer to the departing low level jet. The core of
that jet was now over Lake Erie. Meanwhile, the banding that was
over the Metro was close to the nose of a 115 knot upper level jet.
Finally, the upper Wabash activity was near an area of strong 1000-
925 millibar frontogenesis and surface moisture convergence, near a
reinforcing cold front. In addition, the upper jet allowed the
surface wave to deepen. This cold front, will sweep across central
Indiana from west to east and bring in much colder air by day break.
In fact, LAF has already seen the winds shift and temperatures drop
into the 40s.

Convergence and frontogenesis near the cold front, per the SPC
Mesoanalysis site, along with the upper jet streak and broad upper
trough mandate high PoPs (60-90%) for the rest of the overnight with
some decent QPF in the banding, mainly near and west of I-69. This
is evident in CAMS, models and radar trends. With the PWAT axis
settling eastward along with the low level jet, widespread high QPF
is no longer expected over southeastern sections, where MRMS 24 hour
estimated radar storm total QPF is as high as 2.5 inches over some
locales. This should keep any flooding on the low end tonight. That
said, we will still need to keep a close on local streams there
overnight for the possibility of localized flooding and on some
spots mainly the East Fork White River for possible minor flooding
next week.

Today and Tonight...

The reinforcing cold front will be well east of the area this
morning with strong cold advection bringing temperatures way down in
its wake. However, the broad upper trough will be much slower to
move through, likely not moving east of the area until later
tonight. Hi-Res soundings suggest the column will remain mostly
saturated through 10K feet through much of the day. That and the
more modest forcing from the broad trough will result in lingering
showers today but with much less intensity and QPF. BUFKIT soundings
support a brief mix over northern sections before the activity ends,
late in the day, from southwest to northeast as drier air moves in
but not before morning PoPs around 40% in the west and 60% in the
east. Soundings and a ridge of high pressure building in from the
west support clearing from west to east overnight.

Temperatures will be dropping through the 40s and 30s this morning
before stabilizing  during the afternoon. As the surface ridge moves
over the area tonight and skies clear, upstream dew points in the
20s to lower 30s suggest overnight lows will drop to below freezing
and frost will be possible.

.LONG TERM (Monday through Saturday)...

A progressive jet stream pattern looks to persist through the long
range leading to fairy active weather at times.

After multiple days of warmer-than-average temperatures, cold air
advection behind today's system will bring a return to near-normal
values through Monday. The cool down will be short-lived, however,
as the next trough in the series begins emerging into the Plains on
Monday. Return flow ahead of it will allow temperatures to rebound
quickly into the high 60s/low 70s on Tuesday. Guidance shows a tight
MSLP gradient which should lead to a nice southwesterly wind at
times, gusting up to 30-40mph Tues and Wed afternoons. Not currently
expecting fire weather concerns as some moisture return looks to
limit low RH along with recent rainfall.

Though guidance does show some moisture return it looks to be
modest, with dew points only rising into the 40s to low 50s. As
cyclogenesis occurs over the high Plains, this will lead to fairly
limited precipitation within the system's warm sector. Still, nearly
all guidance shows some precip, likely convective, across Indiana on
Wednesday. Model soundings show a fairly dry column with modest
lapse rates along with high speed shear (over 50kt). While the
potential exists for a strong thunderstorm, given the synoptic-scale
forcing and shear, it appears that limited buoyancy will be a
mitigating factor keeping the risk low for now.

Renewed cold air advection behind the midweek system should bring
about a return to normal temperatures by Thursday. Once again,
however, this will be short-lived as yet another system begins
taking shape over the Plains on Friday. Model uncertainty is greater
by this point and not much more can be said about how this system
may evolve by the time it reaches Indiana. Still, enough of a signal
exists for us to carry chance PoPs on Saturday.

Day 8-14: the progressive long-range pattern looks to de-amplify
somewhat beyond the extended which may allow temperatures to trend
more towards normal.

.AVIATION (12Z TAF Issuance)...

Impacts:

- MVFR and IFR flying conditions are expected much of the day
  with mostly MVFR after 19z-22z and mostly VFR after 02z
  Monday

- Showers will linger day and snow could mix in at KLAF 16z-19z

- Winds 290-320 degrees to 10 knots or so and gusts to around
  20 knots but winds will quickly drop off 00z

Discussion:

Poor flying conditions will continue most of the day with showers
lingering until late. It will also be breezy as post-frontal
northwest winds will gust to around 20 knots. Conditions will
improve tonight as a surface high pressure ridge and much drier air
build in.
