...Heavy Rainfall Risk Across Southeast Illinois...

A vigorous short-wave trough noted on 08z/2am water vapor imagery
over Missouri will continue to deepen into a closed upper low as
it tracks slowly eastward over the next 24 hours. The approaching
upper support will energize a frontal boundary stalled along the
Ohio River to produce widespread showers across much of the
region along/east of the Illinois River today into Sunday. Given
strong upper dynamics and NAM precipitable water values hovering
near 1 inch, the stage will be set for locally heavy rainfall
across parts of the E/SE KILX CWA. 00z CAMs were quite bullish
with 48-hour QPF along/south of I-70...with the HRRR featuring a
bullseye of greater than 4 inches over Crawford County and the NAM
Nest showing more than 7 inches across parts of Lawrence County.
The 06z HRRR has subsequently shifted its maximum QPF southward
into Lawrence and Wabash counties and decreased it to 3-4 inches.
This significant model change showcases the difficulty of
pinpointing the exact location of mesoscale precip banding even at
relatively short time ranges. Rather than relying on one model
solution, the more prudent route is to examine model mean QPF and
HREF/NBM probabilities. The 00z HREF shows a high probability
(60-70% chance) of greater than 1 inch of rain along/south of
I-70...a 40-60% chance of more than 2 inches...and a 30-40% of
more than 3 inches. The HREF mean rainfall across this area ranges
from 1.50 to 2 inches. Given this data, the official forecast
will feature storm total rainfall from this afternoon through
Monday of 1.50 to 2 inches along and south of I-70. However, we
will need to keep a close eye on radar trends as the precip
develops...as there is still potential for a slight N/S shift in
the heaviest rain band. In addition, convection could locally
enhance amounts to greater than 2 inches. Further north into
central Illinois, the showers will be more scattered in nature and
thus rainfall will be considerably lighter. Amounts will decrease
to 0.25 to 0.50 along the I-55 corridor...and to 0.10 or less
along/west of the Illinois River.

...Break in the Showery Weather by Tuesday...

As has been advertised by the last several model runs, the persistent
upper low will gradually meander northeastward...resulting in a
return to mild and dry weather by Tuesday. High temperatures today
through Monday will be greatly inhibited by extensive cloud cover,
showers, and northerly winds...with readings mostly hovering in
the 50s and lower 60s. Once the low departs and sunshine returns,
more seasonable highs in the lower 70s are anticipated for
Tuesday.

...Potential Return of Unsettled Weather by Mid to Late Week...

The break in precip chances will be short-lived...as a second
upper low projected to form over the Desert Southwest this
weekend eventually opens up and tracks northeastward. Model
solutions still vary, so confidence with this complex weather
pattern remains low at this time range. The 00z May 3 model suite
generally suggests the weakening upper feature will approach from
the southwest by Wednesday and may mostly focus its influence
across the southern half of Illinois. While this line of thinking
may change as more data comes in, for now have focused highest
PoPs south of the I-72 corridor Wednesday through Saturday. Given
weakening trend, am not expecting heavy rainfall anywhere across
central and southeast Illinois. In addition, it appears temperatures
will be milder as well...with highs routinely topping out in the
lower to middle 70s.

A band of MVFR ceilings extending from KPIA to KSPI will persist
for the next few hours before gradually rising to low VFR by mid
to late morning. Meanwhile further east, scattered showers will
gradually become more numerous east of I-55 as the day progresses.
Based on the latest HRRR/RAP output and recent radar trends, have
included predominant showers at KDEC/KCMI after 15z and at KSPI
after 17z. The showers will slowly drop southeast of the terminals
by late afternoon or early evening: however, they will remain
close enough to warrant a continued VCSH at KDEC/KCMI through the
remainder of the 12z TAF period. Winds will become NE at 10-15kt
later this morning through tonight.
